Hamilton

WILD and wet, and windy wet falls the night on Hamilton,
Hamilton that seaward looks unto the setting sun,
Lady of the patient face, lifted everlastingly,
Veiled and hushed and mystical as a cloistered nun.

O the days, the cruel days creeping over Hamilton
Like a train of haggard ghosts, homeless and accursed,
Moaning for a fleet o’ dream silver-sailed and wonderful,
Moaning for a sorrow’s sake, the fairest and the first.

O the moon, the lonely moon, leaning low on Hamilton,
Thro’ the years that sunder us the dead come back, come back,
Scent of white eucrephia stars blown on winds of Memory,
Glint and gleam of fagus gold adown the torrent’s track.

Half my heart is buried there, buried high on Hamilton,
Lonely is the sepulchre with never stone for sign,
Where the nodding myrtle-plumes stand like sable sentinels
And the ruddy rimony wreathes the hooded pine.

Half my heart is yearning yet, yearning yet for Hamilton,
Hamilton beyond the surge of sobbing Southern main,
O the croon of wistful winds calling, calling, calling me,
Where the mottled mountain thrush is singing in the rain.

We shall ne’er go back again, back again to Hamilton,
Heart o’ me, our track is toward the heart of burning day,
Hills beyond the call of hills beaconing and beckoning—
Westward, westward winds the track, a thread of dusky grey.

You’re in My Prayers, I Wish You Could Hear Them

You’re in My Prayers, I Wish You Could Hear Them

By Uriah Lee Hamilton

Gentle birdsong at dawn,
I like to find myself mingled in sunrise
With hope still lingering in my heart.

Like Walt Whitman and St. Francis
I could easily live with the animals,
My ideas, love, and loyalty
All simple, sweet, and non-harmful.

When we leave this life,
We return to the earth,
This really is reincarnation
And rejuvenation.

Where The Wannon Waters Flow

To the flat and old brown Countryside the Seasons come and go
But she lives far so very far from where the Wannon waters flow
Through places to her familiar on it's journey to the sea
Through a Land that was even old in the Dreamtime of an ancient history.

Through the busy streets of London cars and trucks buzz up and down
And she now lives far so very far north of Hamilton Town
She left the Southern Grampians Shire some seven years ago
And her journeys have taken her far from where the Wannon waters flow.

Now in her twenty seventh year one can say in her life's prime
And seven years go quickly when one looks back in time
But to her parents home near Hamilton she will return next Spring
When the magpie flutes his finest and the grey shrike thrush does sing

On the gum trees by her old home at the dawning of the day
In the far southern Countryside from London far away
When the wild bush flowers are blooming and in the moonlit sky
The breeding spur wing plovers utter their territorial cry.

Song - On Hamilton Road

It was down by the corner on Hamilton Road
On a cold Sunday night when we met long ago
And we tenderly talked about what might have been
And your kiss was so soft and your lips were so sweet

We were only eighteen; I was full of it then
When we sat face to face in old F O S 10
And to have and to hold you, to fall or to dance
To win or to lose you, my very last chance

(Chorus)

And the heavens held station above us that night
All the stars and the moon, they were waiting for signs
And you offered the dream I’d had since we were kids
And I threw it all to the cold winter wind

It was coming on Christmas, I was blind, I was young,
and though all that unfolded was just distance my love
You can still find a part of me chained like a ghost
In search of that dream down on Hamilton Road

(Chorus)

But there’s no place for sorrow though love fled the field
Like the swirling snowflake that’s preparing to yield
Because you were the sweet breeze that gave this life flight
The beautiful storm that once brought me to life

chorus
Now the world keeps on turning from the world we once knew
From rusting school gates where I waited for you
To streets where we’re strangers by night and by day
But Hamilton Road – sometimes seems like yesterday

Calling Back My Spirit

Something has been sleeping in me, weeping in me, creeping in me
Something has been crying in me, sighing in me, dying in me
In the righting of this wrong, I may have to fight a long awaited duel
Im calling back my spirit from you, Im calling back what is my own.
Something has been burning in me, churning in me, turning in me
Something has been weeping in me, creeping in me, awaking in me
And in the execution of this task, I may come to see my enemys mask
Slip and fall
Im calling back my spirit from you, Im calling back what my own
Im calling back, Im calling back,
Im calling back my spirit from you, Im calling back what is my own
The storm of your outrage seethes and whips around my brittle bones
Anger and violence erupt from your lips and your cover is blown!
I seek the sound of your name
I stand in my own footsteps and I claim my power
Im calling back my spirit from you, Im calling back what is my own
Im calling back, Im calling back, Im calling back, Im calling back,
Im calling back my spirit from you now!, Im calling back what is my own

Italian Poet

Unrelenting dark rain
Drenches the downcast heart;
But the days would seem pleasant
And not sorrow-tinged
If I could only forget
The allure of her eyes
And the scent of her hair:
Then I would not dream foolish dreams
And I would not reel in such despair.

Lovesick for prolonged months,
I fear I’m becoming an Italian poet.

Judith Delivers The Israelites

(after Eugene Lee-hamilton)

Holofernes welcomed Judith in his tent
with in his eyes a kind of lustful gleam,
somewhat as if in a incoherent dream,
smiling, unarmored as if his power was spent.

Drunkenly he pushed her down and over her he bent,
a jewel on her scimitar had an ominous red gleam
as powerfully she beheaded him, made his blood stream,
heard his guards laugh in the tent adjacent

while she drew in her own breath
and in his heart there might have been a kind of love,
but away from the opening she did his body drag,
smiled after she had put him to death
and she believed her mission did come from above,
as she did put his head in a leather bag.

Thou hast shooted dead great Hamilton.

I’m The Catcher in the Rye

I’m The Catcher in the Rye

By Uriah Lee Hamilton and Leah

Threads of truth suspend in time,
Spinning webs of illusion,
Catching us each time we fall from grace.

I didn’t lie when I kissed your face
And said we’d be together for eternity,
I didn’t lie when I said
I’m the Catcher in the Rye.

Our lives are falling apart
Like crumbling leaves,
Beauty’s candlelight is fading
But not yet extinguished.

If Stars Weep

If stars weep
And then die
In the midnight sky;
If flowers turn their petals
Into lonely eyes
Looking sadly at bees
That cruelly fly away;
If my heart turns
Into petrified stone,
I’ll still find a way
To send you love embraced by prayers.

Broken Skull Tattoo

Hey cat-like eyes,
Let’s talk beside the river
When the moon is bright

I have a broken skull tattoo
And a lonely heart,
I don't know the difference
Between fantasy
And the truth

Wait for me
At the lovers’ bridge,
We’ll count rose petals
And kiss

MaCarthur

Between Hamilton and Port Fairy in a scenic Countryside
Where on a bright and a sunny day one can see for far and wide
Is the Township of MaCarthur it is a quiet old place
But if you are a local there your's is a well known face
It seems more like a Village than a quiet old Country Town
And on the Hamilton - Port Fairy roadway few cars pass up and down
Surrounded by farming country and the people who live there
Must consider themselves lucky since they breathe clean country air
Just nine kilometres from Mt Eccles where marsupials abound
Where koalas, grey kangaroos and wallabies in large numbers are to be found
In MaCarthur in Victoria in the Springtime of the year
The grey shrike thrush and the magpie are birds one does often hear
And in the roadside paddocks in their earth stained feathers of white
The long billed corellas digging for their food are a fairly common sight.

The Next Poet’s Exhilarating Dream

I should be back-alley midnight dead
Having seen the last sunset’s vanishing light
Replaced with a gorgeously blood-dripping eternal night
Instead of counting lingering regrets
With lonely and dimming eyes still squinting into the past.
I only wanted to live a limited amount of days
And I’ve pointlessly over-extended my stay…

Had I been a teenage genius
Along the lines of Arthur Rimbaud,
I wouldn’t hesitate to go,

One should create art
And then flee
Like a wild and ruthless bandit
Into the next poet’s exhilarating dream!

Lonely and Lovely

Drinking beer in the city moonlight,
I’m lonely and lovely.

I’m tenderly in love,
Mostly with ghosts
Who have forgotten my face.

I dream of happiness
With the children I’ve failed to materialize.

God will see my kindness
And one day dry my tears.

Song Of One Of The Girls

Here in my heart I am Helen;
I'm Aspasia and Hero, at least.
I'm Judith, and Jael, and Madame de Stael;
I'm Salome, moon of the East.

Here in my soul I am Sappho;
Lady Hamilton am I, as well.
In me Recamier vies with Kitty O'Shea,
With Dido, and Eve, and poor Nell.

I'm of the glamorous ladies
At whose beckoning history shook.
But you are a man, and see only my pan,
So I stay at home with a book.

The Garden of My Grave

As a small boy,
I would dig in the earth
With my father.
For him, it was a small garden
In the heart of the city
To raise tomatoes.
For myself,
I was always digging the grave
That I desired to be buried in.
