Church

I am sure there are those who go to church,
For purposes I have yet myself researched.
But I do not intend to learn more about Satan.
Nor about those demons...
Dispensing sins.
Where from inside a church...
People pray to be forgiven for them.

I am sure there are those who go to church,
Other than to wear their Sunday best.
Or to regurgitate...
Scriptures learned or verses they've rehearsed.
And in privacy misdeeds confessed.

But there is evidence lacking on urban streets,
Near these places where 'The Word' is heard.
And sermons are preached.
All I observe is decadence done.
Where hypocrites congregated and speak,
To others what 'they' should not do!
As a form of their 'community' outreach!

While showing how the devil does it.
From lessons recited to ignite inner fear.
And the 'how-one-should-live'
To get those expected golden 'wings'...
Given to them,
By a 'heavenly' being...
Adorning upon them 'halos' they've earn.
As melodious harmonic voices sing!
With angels appearing to dance near.

And this conflicts with my depiction of God!
When I witness the destruction of all that God creates.
As those who say they are of faith with 'belief'...
Do not find their actions neither wicked or odd!

Some Have Steeples. Some Don't

What do I think of church?

'Yes! '

Church?
Like in 'church' church?

'Yes! '

Well...
Some have steeples.
Some don't.
Some have people.
Some wont.

Some are religiously political.
And some are politically religious.

My vehicle is my church.
And that's all I care about.

'Oh?
So your 'car' is your church? '

Oh.
No no!
My 'body' is my church.
It is my sanctuary.

Now...
Keep in mind,
I am not devoted to keep it as pure,
As it should be.
But I do the best I can,
Not to be led away by temptation.

But everyday I pray to be forgiven,
Of those 'sins' I know I should not enjoy!
However...
You can find me anytime,
Self righteously defending...
My point of view.

Jesus Power over Demons

Jesus' Power Over Demons

June 24,2007 — The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

“Jesus' Power Over Demons” — Pastor Lassman

Luke 8: 26-39

Listen

My Fellow Redeemed in Christ,

Do you believe in a real Satan? Do you believe that there are demons? I’m sure you do, but if you don’t you should. Of course, such things might seem strange in our scientific and technical world and many people don’t believe in Satan or evil spirits. And, being spirits, we cannot see Satan or demons. But the Bible talks a great deal about them. I’ve never seen Satan or a demon, but I believe in them not only because the Bible talks about them, but especially because Jesus Christ himself speaks about Satan and demons. In the church we often talk about sin and death, and rightly so. But we should never forget about Satan and his evil forces. For they go together: Satan, sin, and death as Martin Luther says in his Small Catechism about Jesus: “who has redeemed me a lost a condemned person, purchased and won me from all sin, from death….and from the power of the devil.” The power of the devil. That brings us to our gospel lesson where we see “Jesus’ Power Over Demons.”

I. In Jesus Christ the kingdom of God has come to attack and destroy the kingdom of Satan. When he began his public ministry at his baptism Jesus said: “repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.”.

A. God, of course, had created a perfect world. This included what we would call the “good angels.” But some of those angels, led by their leader, Satan, were not happy with their position in God’s order: they wanted to be God. And in their evil rebellion against God they were transformed into demons who oppose God and all that he stands for. It was their leader, Satan, who showed up as a snake in the Garden of Eden to tempt Adam and Eve to also be like God. And so sin and death came into the world. Satan had invaded God’s world and trashed it. Demons are the source of the world’s superstitions and religions. Demons are the ones behind those who persecute and kill Christians. Demons are the ones behind all the false doctrines that divide the Christian church. With deception and lies they do all in their power to keep people from believing in Jesus Christ and to destroy the faith of those who already believe. Thus the Bible calls the devil our “enemy”. There is an underlying evil in the world that human beings are helpless to overcome. The demon possessed man in our text symbolizes all of this. But remember that every human being is born into this world under the influence of Satan and a member of his kingdom as the apostle John says in his first letter: ”the whole world is under the control of the Evil one.” When you and I were born in the world, we too were under the control of the evil one—enslaved to sin and death, under God’s wrath and damnation. Never forget that.

B. And that’s why Jesus came into the world: to attack and destroy the kingdom of Satan and save his people. He trashed the kingdom of Satan, defeating him and giving mankind victory over sin and death. You can hear the fear in the evil spirit’s voice: “what have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the most high God.” They are filled with terror because they know that Jesus is stronger than they are. They are afraid of Jesus: “I beg you do not torment me.” They know that on the judgment day Jesus Christ will cast them into the fires of hell as we read in revelation: “and the devil..was thrown into the lake of burning sulpher, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night.” And so the spirits begged Jesus not to send them “into the abyss.” The demon was afraid that that day had come. But it had not. So Jesus told them to leave the man and enter the pigs. And they had no choice but to do what he said. Now in our gospel Jesus only delivered one man from demon possession. But on the cross he delivered all of humanity, you and me, from Satan and his forces by dying for our sins. Because of Jesus Christ we never have to fear being possessed by a demon—for our bodies are the temple of God. Because of Jesus Christ we can resist the devil and his temptations—for in baptism we have been united to Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus Christ the devil cannot scare us with death or damnation—for all our sins are forgiven and we will be raised from the dead. Because of Jesus Christ the devil cannot deceive us with his lies because we know the truth. Paul says it all when he writes in Colossians: “for he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Col.1: 13) you and I have been rescued from Satan and his kingdom—he has no power over us.

II. But as always there are two responses to Jesus.

A. Regardless of the evidence, some people just won’t believe. We see this in our text. There were eyewitnesses to what had happened—the herdsmen who tended the pigs. And they went and told the city and the whole country-side what they had seen. Indeed, they created such a stir that many people went out to the spot where it happened to see for themselves. And there was Jesus- and the man sitting at his feet. And they saw with their own eyes the difference in him. He was no longer naked, but clothed; no longer out of his mind and violent, but calm and in his right mind. He was normal. Clearly, something profound and wonderful had happened. And now comes the strange response: “then all the people of the surrounding country…asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with fear.” What? ! Why did they say that? ! Couldn’t they see that Jesus had done something good, something kind, something merciful, something wonderful? Why did they ask him to leave? Did they care more about the pigs that were destroyed than they did for the well-being of this man? We are not told. But all through the gospels we hear of people who do not believe in Jesus even though they saw him doing miracles and wonderful acts of kindness. Perhaps we get a clue when just fourteen verses before our text Jesus says: “[these] are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the words from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved.” Many people prefer the kingdom of Satan. They like the darkness more than the light

B. But that wasn’t the response of the man from whom the demons left! He believed and was thankful for what Jesus had done for him. As a matter of fact, he was so grateful that he begged Jesus to go with him. But here’s another little surprise- Jesus said “no”. Instead he told him to return to his home and tell everyone what God had done for him. And that’s exactly what he did: he went home and told everyone what Jesus had done for him. I imagine that took a lot of faith. His emotions told him he wanted to be with Jesus. But he denied his emotions and instead did what Jesus told him to do. And so it is with us. We too are thankful for what Jesus has done for us. Every Sunday through the forgiveness of sins he gives us victory over sin and death and the power of Satan and the forces of evil. Such is the power of god’s forgiveness. We love coming here on Sunday mornings and being with Jesus and receiving his salvation. And yet as important as it is, we cannot sit in church all the time. Jesus wants us to return to our homes, our work, our schools—our communities and tell everyone what he has done.

Conclusion: when Jesus drove the demons out of that man Jesus attacked the kingdom of Satan. But when he died for the sins of the world Jesus destroyed Satan’s kingdom. And through faith in him we share in his victory. For Satan’s only weapons are lies, sin, and death. But in Jesus Christ we know the truth; in Jesus Christ our sin has been forgiven, and in Jesus Christ death has been defeated and we have life. Satan has no power over us. Indeed, we can resist him. And how do we know this is true? Well, we see Jesus casting out helpless demons who fear him and must obey him. But the main proof is the empty tomb. When Jesus was raised from the dead God’s hand was raised in victory over Satan and his kingdom. Everywhere the gospel of Jesus Christ is preached and taught the kingdom of Satan is trashed. And one day Jesus will return and cast Satan and all demons into the abyss that they fear so much. Amen!

Hollow Rituals

When they were young,
Adorable and cute.
You announced to me...
That they were 'your' children.
And I respected that.

Now that they've grown older...
Opinionated, loud and abusive.
Lazy and disrespecting.
Impatient with no time to listen.
You do not hold yourself responsible.
Nor accountable for their actions.
In fact you are quick,
To rely on your selective memory.

Remember...
I was there observing,
Those lessons taught to them you did teach.
In a loud judgemental roar...
You sometimes to them preached.

And your self righteous activities...
Are there to be observed in church!
And you tell me you can not remember,
Your own pastor's sermons?
Although you dress impeccably...
As if this is rehearsed!

That is why I find it difficult,
To follow hollow rituals.
Or believe anyone feels...
What they sing in spirituals.
With voices raised in serious praise!
For them it is just a routine...
Without depth and very little meaning.
Like a 'buck' that is passed...
And has lost its worth.

Church On Sunday

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives
Tomorrow is too late to pretend everything's alright now
I'm not getting any younger as long
As you don't get any older
I'm not gonna state that yesterday never was

Bloodshot
Deadbeat and lack of sleep
Making your mascare bleed
Tears down your face
Leaving traces of my mistakes

When I say
If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?
If you live with me I'll die for you
And this compromise

I hereby solemny swear to tell the whole truth
And nothing but the truth is what I'll ever hear from you
"Thrust" is a dirty word that comes from such a liar
But "Respect" is something I will earn
If you have faith

Bloodshot
Deadbeat and lack of sleep
Making your mascare bleed
Tears down your face
leaving traces of my mistakes

When I say
If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?
If you live with me I'll die for you
And this compromise

If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?
If you live with me I'll die for you
And this compromise
Let's go

Ohhhhhhhhh........

If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?
If you live with me I'll die for you
And this compromise

If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?
If you live with me I'll die for you
And this compromise
And this compromise
It's a compromise

Hypocrites in the Church? Yes, and in the lodge and at the home. Don't hunt through the Church for a hypocrite. Go home and look in the mirror. Hypocrites? Yes. See that you make the number one less.

A revival does two things. First, it returns the Church from her backsliding and second, it causes the conversion of men and women; and it always includes the conviction of sin on the part of the Church. What a spell the devil seems to cast over the Church today!

Churched People

Many unconverted religious people, gather together under a steeple,
They gather in the church below, but how much of it is just for show?
Each week religiously on one day, they meet together kneel and pray.
How much does it change their ways, as they live the other six days?
Weekly as they are churched, how often are the Scriptures searched?
Does the church change their heart, as service ends and they depart?

Getting back to the daily grind, does it influence their heart and mind?
There are followers of Christianity, and there are those in Churchianity.
Is their belief just a weekly thing, as hypocritical people gather to sing?
For most do not live what they sing, after leaving their church building.
Do these men practice Churchianity, when all week they use profanity?
It makes unbelievers question why, they should even give church a try.

If it’s God’s Church, you will know, as spiritual changes begin to show.
For as Christ starts a change within, He begins to purge your daily sin.
Sad to say that many are deceived, even when they think they believe,
For their belief is in an institution; one that doesn’t have a real solution.
The only real solution is Jesus Christ, for anyone to truly have new life,
For if one believes only in their head, they shall remain spiritually dead.

Jesus Christ spoke much about this; with the man know as Nicodemus,
Jesus said you must be Born Again, if you’re to see the Kingdom friend.
Today a church has no eternal worth, if it does not preach on New Birth.
When you know Christ in your heart, your old life shall have a new start.
You must become like little children, or my friend you will die in your sin.
So today be converted in Jesus Christ, and He will give to you New Life.

Church Bells Ring

The church bells ring merrily
their wake up call
for all those sinner to repent
the sins they committed all week.
In their Sunday best
looking smartly dressed,
they amble down to the church
and take their place on a pew.
After several hymns they sing,
the minister gives his address
of how the evils of the world
are creeping up on all of us.
How we must be always wary
in everything we do
as the devil is always waiting
just to ensnare you.
More prayers and hymns follow
and then they are on their way.
However, did they learning anything
while they were at church today,
sadly for a lot
what was said went in one ear
and went out the other,
for during the week
they follow the same path
and go about sinning again.

Released For Repeated Processing

Not into subservience!
Or failed belief systems.

Nor do I tolerate those...
Who impose their insecurities on others.

You know the kind...
Who talk about the disadvantaged.
While they make sure,
They are kept that way...
At a disadvantage!

Not into those,
Who allow this to happen either.
Like those preachers who leach their congregations...
And brag about their Phd's from pulpits.
To insure a cure for devilment...
With a percentage of all earnings,
That will ease an ignorance...
They sermonize can be managed.
At their living tax free 'advantage'.

Deceptions like these,
To further the cause of fear...
Only results in the advancement of decadence.
And that is very clear!

Where there is a church...
Crime is close and near.

'That is blasphemous! '

Explain that in your next 911 call!
Maybe to you the police will rush.
Or maybe your minister will show up...
If it is not an inconvenience.

~Yes, my brother...
I'll be there as soon as I can.
Oh, by the way...
Did you tithe this past Sunday?
You know the church is short on funds! ~

It doesn't take a spy,
To wonder why!

And not far away are diseases from hospitals.
That is the reason there are so many of them.
To make sure people are treated...
And released for repeated processing.
For a fee!

Leaving those who live,
In the profligating of their 'sins'...
The least likely,
To benefit from their ailments.

Always In Conference

I am honest.
Centered.
Respectful.
Feeling blessed...
And speak my mind.
Without fear of reprisals!
That haunt others,
From time to time!
Nor am I chased,
By lurking shadows...
I plant and place,
To face and rename my 'enemies'!
I know 'who' I am.
And I let that be known!
I have dignity and pride...
And I seek for my life,
An undenied quality!
For 'me' I know that's right.

I am often asked
What church I attend.
And when I say none...
People are often stunned.
And some become offended,
Beginning to quote scriptures
They have learned!
Making me realize immediately...
Just who in hell will burn!

They are closer to the devil,
Than I am.
I don't hear his ways being preached...
As hypocrites sit,
Or give praises on their feet!

And I wonder...
If I possess these qualities,
And they do not...
Since God and I,
Are always in conference!
Shouldn't I be the one,
Prepared to run...
From them,
Just as stunned?

Afterall,
My mind is not pre-occupied with temptations.
Nor am I absorbed with the 'values' of sin!
Or attend in a congregation with others,
Sharing pretentions that don't end!

Church Of Desire

(sambora)
Woke up in a cold sweat
In the middle of the night
Seems like a lifetime
When youre wondering whos wrong or right
One confession would resurrect the truth
Revenge or forgiveness for sins between me and you
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire
You never find a reason why love falls from grace
Some kind of voodoo, like a spirit you cant embrace
Theres a voice in the mirror, and a ghost in my heart
That relives the passion before we were torn apart
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire
Now we dance with the devil down lonely
Street, lonely street
Looking for a window in the house of tears
Living in hell, I pray the rain disappears
Im headed for a breakdown
And the fever runs higher
As I kneel at the altar I can feel your fire
In the church of desire
Church of desire

A Contradiction

They go to church with their prayer books on sunday and praise the lord and sing their hymns and pray
And when their political leaders talk of war they support them for war to them one might say seems okay
They are what one might call a contradiction their love for god and war go hand in hand
These people who love god and talk of bloodshed are people that are hard to understand.

They go to church to pray to the almighty though with their next door neighbour they're at war
But they kid themselves by their self delusion for they take self delusion that bit far
They say they love god though their god from them seem distant and they don't seem to have their god within
And if their god exist then their god will disown them for god's approval they could not hope to win.

These people truly are a contradiction they go to church and praise their god in song
Yet some of them belittle their next door neighbour and some of them will tell you war's not wrong
And some of them back their political leaders to dropp bombs on people they don't even know
And they think they are decent church going people yet for others compassion they do not show.

When You Last Visited

With the wearing of emblems and symbols,
To declare a faith and belief to profess...
They've been saved and they show this has been addressed.
And the many who do this believe they've been released,
From creating to initiate chaos and confusion...
In their minds they keep affirmed until the seeking is reached.

And the ones not affiliated,
To designate themselves followers of a denomination claimed...
Are often solicited with a nitpicking them into guilt and shame,
For expressing their choice to stay away from hypocrites...
Found to gather in numbers to congregate their hidden ills,
As if to pray away the decadence and filth within them instilled.

'But you can not have a true relationship with God,
If you keep yourself separated from the church.'

~I find that odd...
That a bird, tree, blade of grass or any animal I pass,
Seem to exist without conflict.
And those who sit with their issues and conflicts,
Are more disturbed but quick to defend...
A teaching of The Word they do not listen to comprehend.~

'You are a heathen and you are going straight to hell.'

~Gee!
That sounds frightening.
But tell me this since you are experienced.~

'What's that? '

~When you last visited,
Was it really as hot as you remembered it? ~

Faith Alone Is All One Needs To Succeed

If those of goodwill, peace and harmony...
Have created foundations with the spreading of this,
And there are many of these 'structures' today that exist...
With signs adorning them to capitalize upon their purposes.
Where on the streets that support corrupted minds,
Increasing with the giving of time...
Are the ones with those lofty ambitions?

Could they be inside those places hiding,
And too afraid to show their faces...
Outside where their actions,
Would interact with those in need.
And there is a belief...
A faith alone is all one needs to succeed.
And kept inside is a dependency on going through the rituals.
And not performing the actuality of their deeds.

Much Today Is Not Of The Lord

This world has changed in so many ways in these ever darkening days,
For it used to be The God of Grace, but now its wicked men we praise.

Today many entering God's marriage covenant enter totally deceived,
For those who wish to, have changed Adam to Madam and Eve to Steve.

Pure religion is keeping oneself from the world so not to be polluted,
But we have embraced the world so that our theology is convoluted.

Soldiers serving God have no time to be involved in civilian affairs,
But too often the Gospel is put aside, only to address worldly cares.

God makes it very clear that a rebellious spirit should be corrected,
Today we are told to stay encouraged, as this is only to be expected.

The Lord Himself said that we are not to call anyone on earth Father,
But ordinary men dismiss The Lord simply because they wear a collar.

Church is where you strengthen your Faith by hearing sound theology,
Unfortunately many pulpits today are smothered in worldly psychology.

As you struggle through your week church is a place to be encouraged,
But Satan has planted so many weeds at times you leave discouraged.

John the Baptist's words echoed on, “Repent for The Kingdom is near.”
Today many balk all my sins are forgiven, so what do I have to fear?

Much today is not of The Lord, who will one day very soon condemn it,
And many will be left behind when He raptures His remaining remnant.

Sunday Christians

today is Sunday
the one day sunday christians
are off to church

these are the Christians
who are only Christian
one day Sunday a week

Christians for only one day?
one day sunday for a few hours?
sin of Hypocrisy in Christianity?

is one of the most detestable sins
it causes righteous worshippers to stumble
it takes the name of God in vain

my neighbor proclaims I am not a Christian
because I do not show go to church Sunday
she is correct I am not a Christian as she is?

this is all that she is correct in...
I do not claim to be a good Christian...
I do not even claim to be a Christian...

although every hour every day God
motivates many multiple actions in my life
God even at times enters my dreams

motivates the first actions of my day
after I arise from precious sleeping
even in sleep God is part of my life

I am Christian Buddhist Muslim Jewish
I am respectful of all who worship God
respectful of all who worship in sincerity

God said love your neighbor
I love them and pity them both
God said thy shall not judge

I am mindful of my own sins
I have pity for the sins suffering of others
I rejoice in my Lord Savior Jesus

With Darkness Looming

With darkness looming now, the question for us is, why and how?
The question's for God's Church, while weekly in a pew they perch,
Learning in God's Word each week, yet, at times we do not speak,
As right has now becomes wrong, we have become a quiet throng.

Why is the Church quiet friend, about the prophesied coming end?
Why are some folks blinded to, the darkness around me and you?
Why is there not more urgency, in light of darkness which we see?
Why are some not concerned at all, while we watch our nation fall?

How can Christ's Body be divided, as we are all to be likeminded?
How can some embrace the ways, of political figures in our days?
How can some pretend it's right, with their views as dark as night?
How can we not be concerned, with all The Bible we have learned?

It is for the times like this in life; we need to stand for Jesus Christ,
Sealed in God's Righteousness, we must live our life in soberness,
Being His Witnesses in the world, as we see the darkness unfurled,
Believers need to be of one mind, while we witness the end of time.

For we should not have any fear, of pointing out the darkness near,
A darkness that has blinded some, of the evil time, that have come,
Deceiving the Elect, if possible, as Satan works out his wicked will,
Preaching to us, wrong is right; we must in the dark be God's Light.

Blasphemistic Emoting Hypocrites

Turned off I am,
By those in church voice.
Softly spoken scripture quoting,
Folks who approach...
Those with souls to save.

~They seem to be all over the place,
These days.~

Passing out their leaflets,
Depicting the end of life as known.
With pictures of Sunbeamed disciples,
With wings and halos worn and overblown.
Blazing away and being lifted up by the rays.

And when these folks are safe,
In shelters behind closed doors.
They pick up their phones,
To gossip with neighbors.
To talk about the minister.
And who in their churches,
Is disliked and ignored.
And what 'they' don't condone.

Yet they cuss out the children,
Who loudly play on the streets.
Calling them sinning heathens...
Then threaten to call the police.

Flipping through their Bibles,
On Wednesday during Bible class.
Singing in the choirs,
And unwrapping candy snacks.

Making noises throughout the sermon.
Giggling with whispers passed.
Then when asked to attend meetings,
To get things done in the community....
Excuses from their mouths come out.
No time do they have for unity!
Not for their minds to grasp.

But praise God that they've been asked!

Turned off I am,
By those in church voice.
Softly spoken scripture quoting,
Folks who approach...
Those with souls to save.

Passing out their leaflets,
Depicting the end of life as known.
With pictures of Sunbeamed disciples,
With wings and halos worn and overblown.
Blazing away and being lifted up by the rays.

Going through the motions...
Emoting hypocrites,
Devoid of spiritual motive.
And blasphemistic...
These self righteous loyalists.

Devote not one shred of consciousness...
To rituals routined.
Without a depth of feelings connected.
At least none believed,
Either meant or seen...
To be convincing.

'You can't tell me nuthin' bout Gawd.
I study! '

~But do you know how to pray?
Something is missing in your conveyance.
A delivery is heard.
But a comprehension of it needs 'your' attention.~

'Excuse me?
You I don't see in church at all.'
