Saul's Armor

When first my soul enlisted
My Saviour's foes to fight;
Mistaken friends insisted
I was not armed aright:
So Saul advised David
He certainly would fail;
Nor could his life be saved
Without a coat of mail.

But David, though he yielded
To put the armor on,
Soon found he could not wield it,
And ventured forth with none.
With only sling and pebble
He fought the fight of faith;
The weapons seemed but feeble,
Yet proved Goliath's death.

Had I by him been guided,
And quickly thrown away
The armor men provided,
I might have gained the day;
But armed as they advised me,
My expectations failed;
My enemy surprised me,
And had almost prevailed.

Furnished with books and notions,
And arguments and pride
I practised all my motions,
And Satan's pow'r defied
But soon perceived with trouble,
That these would do no good;
Iron to him is stubble,
And brass like rotten wood.

I triumphed at a distance
While he was out of sight;
But faint was my resistance
When forced to join in fight:
He broke my sword in shivers,
And pierced my boasted shield;
Laughed at my vain endeavors,
And drove me from the field.

Satan will not be braved
By such a worm as I;
Then let me learn with David,
To trust in the Most High;
To plead the name of Jesus,
And use the sling of prayer;
Thus armed, when Satan sees us
He'll tremble and despair.

Bible Stories: David and Goliath

The Israelites with Saul as King were sad;
The Philistines with Goliath as head
Had challenged them at Socoh in Judah,
To send a warrior who dare defeat him.
For forty days, the king was in chaos;
They could not find a person for combat!

David, the shepherd lad was bringing food
For his older brothers daily by foot;
He heard the king’s promise to reward one,
Who would defeat Goliath in combat.

He went to Saul and told his desire;
He was undaunted and had great courage;
Saul had no choice but try him out at last;
David declined the armor from the king!

With just a sling upon his shoulder and
Five pebbles taken from the brook near-by,
He went to meet Goliath with his staff!
Oh, what a fearless lad, God had chosen!

In armor full, stood Goliath giant;
He cursed the puny David by his gods;
He told David, ‘you bring a staff to hit
A mighty warrior, like a dog! ’

But David said, ‘today, the Lord will give
You in my hands, and I will cut your head
Off, and throw your body to the birds, wild beasts!
The earth shall know that Israel has a God,
And Yahweh needs no sword or spear to kill,
And give the enemy into my hand! ’

Then David placed a pebble in his sling;
He swung it o’er his head and let it go!
The pebble found the giant’s temple fast;
The Philistine fell to the ground all dazed!
The Shepherd lad cut off the giant’s head,
Using his sword and showed it to his foes!

The Philistines fled, seeing leader killed!
They were pursued and fully defeated;
He took Goliath’s armor to his tent,
And head to Jerusalem for display!

When Saul had asked him whose son he was, then,
David said, ‘I’m your servant Jesse’s son! ’
A Shepherd lad had trounced, killed Goliath!
He was the future king of Israelites!
A pebble had surpassed the spear and shield!

Olney Hymn 4: Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord My Banner

By whom was David taught
To aim the deadly blow,
When he Goliath fought,
And laid the Gittite low?
Nor sword nor spear the stripling took,
But chose a pebble from the brook.

'Twas Israel's God and King
Who sent him to the fight;
Who gave him strength to sling,
And skill to aim aright.
Ye feeble saints, your strength endures,
Because young David's God is yours.

Who order'd Gideon forth,
To storm the invaders' camp.
With arms of little worth,
A pitcher and a lamp?
The trumpets made his coming known
And all the host was overthrown.

Oh! I have seen the day,
When with a single word,
God helping me to say,
'My trust is in the Lord,'
My soul hath quell'd a thousand foes
Fearless of all that could oppose.

But unbelief, self-will,
Self-righteousness, and pride,
How often do they steal
My weapon from my side!
Yet David's Lord, and Gideon's friend,
Will help his servant to the end.

Today... 'David

David was Israel's shepherd king
Slew a giant Philistine with his sling
A foretaste of the coming promised One
Jesus Christ Who is David's greater Son

You came to us as the great Shepherd King
When You entered this world God's love to bring
And to lay down Your life as a sacrifice
To redeemYour sheep and to pay sins price

Standing before You was a giant foe
To slay him into death you had to go
No sling or sword was used in this great fight
There naked You appeared to all men's sight

That lion Satan roared ferociously
Clawing intoYour body on that tree
But he could find no sin to hold You there
And helplessly watched on in his despair

'It is finished' was Your victory cry
Bowing Your head upon the cross to die
Into the domain of the grave You went
To conquer sin and death was Your intent

A royal diadem placed on Your head
For now You have been raised up from the dead
Up from the grave You rose victoriously
Your enemy slain so gloriously

The victory over death has been won
By this king David's even greater Son
The Good Shepherd is now tending His sheep
And safe in His fold He does each one keep

The Believer's Danger, Safety, And Duty

Simon, beware! the Saviour said,
Satan, your subtle foe,
Already has his measures laid
Your soul to overthrow.

He wants to sift you all, as wheat,
And thinks his vict'ry sure;
But I his malice will defeat,
My prayer shall faith secure.

Believers, tremble and rejoice,
Your help and danger view;
This warning has to you a voice,
This promise speaks to you.

Satan beholds, with jealous eye,
Your privilege and joy;
He's always watchful, always nigh,
To tear and to destroy.

But Jesus lives to intercede,
That faith may still prevail,
He will support in time of need,
And Satan's arts shall fail.

Yet, let us not the warning slight,
But watchful still be found;
Though faith cannot be slain in fight,
It may receive a wound.

While Satan watches, dare we sleep?
We must our guard maintain;
But, Lord, do thou the city keep,
Or else we watch in vain.

David

It is not always to the strong
Victorious battle shall belong.
This found Goliath huge and tall:
Mightiest giant of them all,
Who in the proud Philistian host
Defiëd Israel with boast.

With loud voice Goliath said:
'Hear, armed Israel, gatherëd,
And in array against us set:
Ye shall alone by me be met.
For am not I a Philistine?
What strength may be compared to mine?

'Choose ye a man of greatest might:
And if he conquer me in fight,
Then we will all servants be,
King of Israel, unto thee.
But if I prove the victor, then
Shall Saul and all his armëd men
Bend low beneath Philistian yoke.'
Day by day these words he spoke,
Singly traversing the ground.
But not an Israelite was found
To combat man to man with him,
Who such prodigious force of limb
Displayed. Like to a weaver's beam
The ponderous spear he held did seem.
In height six cubits he did pass,
And he was armed all o'er in brass.

Him we will leave awhile, and speak
Of one, the soft down on whose cheek
Of tender youth the tokens bare.
Ruddy he was and very fair.
David, the son of Jesse he,
Small sized, yet beautiful to see.
Three brothers had he in the band
Of warriors under Saul's command;
Himself at home did private keep
In Bethlem's plains his father's sheep.

Jesse said to this his son:
'David, to thy brothers run,
Where in the camp they now abide,
And learn what of them may betide.
These presents for their captains take,
And of their fare inquiries make.'
With joy the youth his sire obeyed.-
David was no whit dismayed
When he arrivëd at the place
Where he beheld the strength and face
Of dread Goliath, and could hear
The challenge. Of the people near
Unmoved he asked, what should be done
To him who slew that boasting one,
Whose words such mischiefs did forebode
To the armies of the living God?

'The king,' they unto David say,
'Most amply will that man repay.
He and his father's house shall be
Evermore in Israel free.
With mighty wealth Saul will endow
That man: and he has made a vow;
Whoever takes Goliath's life,
Shall have Saul's daughter for his wife.'

His eldest brother, who had heard
His question, was to anger stirred
Against the youth: for (as he thought)
Things out of his young reach he sought.
Said he, 'What moved thee to come here,
To question warlike men? say, where
And in whose care are those few sheep
That in the wilderness you keep?
I know thy thoughts, how proud thou art:
In the haughtiness of thy heart,
Hoping a battle thou mayst see,
Thou comest hither down to me.'

Then answered Jesse's youngest son
In these words: 'What have I done?
Is there not cause?' Some there which heard,
And at the manner of his word
Admired, report this to the king.
By his command they David bring
Into his presence. Fearless then,
Before the king and his chief men,
He shows his confident design
To combat with the Philistine.
Saul with wonder heard the youth,
And thus addressed him: 'Of a truth,
No power thy untried sinew hath
To cope with this great man of Gath.'

Lowly David bowed his head,
And with firm voice the stripling said:
'Thy servant kept his father's sheep.-
Rushing from a mountain steep
There came a lion, and a bear,
The firstlings of my flock to tear.
Thy servant hath that lion killed,
And killed that bear, when from the field
Two young lambs by force they seized.
The Lord was mercifully pleased
Me to deliver from the paw
Of the fierce bear, and cruel jaw
Of the strong lion. I shall slay
The unrighteous Philistine this day,
If God deliver him also
To me.' He ceased. The king said, 'Go:
Thy God, the God of Israel, be
In the battle still with thee.'

David departs unarmed, save
A staff in hand he chanced to have.
Nothing to the fight he took,
Save five smooth stones from out a brook;
These in his shepherd's scrip he placed,
That was fastened round his waist.
With staff and sling alone he meets
The armëd giant, who him greets
With nought but scorn. Looking askance
On the fair ruddy countenance
Of his young enemy-'Am I
A dog, that thou comest here to try
Thy strength upon me with a staff?'
Goliath said with scornful laugh.
'Thou comest with sword, with spear, with shield,
Yet thou to me this day must yield.
The Lord of Hosts is on my side,
Whose armies boastful thou'st defied.
All nations of the earth shall hear
He saveth not with shield and spear.'

Thus David spake, and nigher went,
Then choosing from his scrip, he sent
Out of his slender sling a stone.-
The giant uttered fearful moan.
The stone though small had piercëd deep
Into his forehead, endless sleep
Giving Goliath-and thus died
Of Philistines the strength and pride.

Goliath and David

(For D. C. T., Killed at Fricourt, March, 1916)

Yet once an earlier David took
Smooth pebbles from the brook:
Out between the lines he went
To that one-sided tournament,
A shepherd boy who stood out fine
And young to fight a Philistine
Clad all in brazen mail. He swears
That he’s killed lions, he’s killed bears,
And those that scorn the God of Zion
Shall perish so like bear or lion.
But … the historian of that fight
Had not the heart to tell it right.

Striding within javelin range,
Goliath marvels at this strange
Goodly-faced boy so proud of strength.
David’s clear eye measures the length;
With hand thrust back, he cramps one knee,
Poises a moment thoughtfully,
And hurls with a long vengeful swing.
The pebble, humming from the sling
Like a wild bee, flies a sure line
For the forehead of the Philistine;
Then … but there comes a brazen clink,
And quicker than a man can think
Goliath’s shield parries each cast.
Clang! clang! and clang! was David’s last.
Scorn blazes in the Giant’s eye,
Towering unhurt six cubits high.
Says foolish David, “Damn your shield!
And damn my sling! but I’ll not yield.”
He takes his staff of Mamre oak,
A knotted shepherd-staff that’s broke
The skull of many a wolf and fox
Come filching lambs from Jesse’s flocks.
Loud laughs Goliath, and that laugh
Can scatter chariots like blown chaff
To rout; but David, calm and brave,
Holds his ground, for God will save.
Steel crosses wood, a flash, and oh!
Shame for beauty’s overthrow! 40
(God’s eyes are dim, His ears are shut.)
One cruel backhand sabre-cut—
“I’m hit! I’m killed!” young David cries,
Throws blindly forward, chokes … and dies.
And look, spike-helmeted, grey, grim,
Goliath straddles over him.

The Heart Taken

The castle of the human heart
Strong in its native sin;
Is guarded well, in every part,
By him who dwells within.

For Satan there, in arms, resides,
And calls the place his own;
With care against assaults provides,
And rules, as on a throne.

Each traitor thought on him, as chief,
In blind obedience waits;
And pride, self-will, and unbelief,
Are posted at the gates.

Thus Satan for a season reigns,
And keeps his goods in peace;
The soul is pleased to wear his chains,
Nor wishes a release.

But Jesus, stronger far than he,
In his appointed hour
Appears, to set his people free
From the usurper's pow'r.

This heart I bought with blood, he says,
And now it shall be mine;
His voice the strong one armed dismays,
He knows he must resign.

In spite of unbelief and pride,
And self, and Satan's art;
The gates of brass fly open wide,
And Jesus wins the heart.

The rebel soul that once withstood
The Saviour's kindest call;
Rejoices now, by grace subdued,
To serve him with her all.

Battles Of Light And Darkness

Warrior teenage shepherd David dragged
giant severed head of Philistine Goliath;
all the way to Jerusalem to Golgotha
in answer to God's prophecy command;

because in Genesis in God’s word is written Genesis 2: 14-15.
the serpent will be bruised in the head;
therefore David buried Goliath's head
beneath Golgotha to fulfill future kingdom sign;

head wound was fatal death wound
heal wound a wound to be recovered;
at Golgotha place of skulls the blood
Christ freely shed upon a cross freed;

all accepting Christ of original sin’s origin
Christ’s blood triumphed over buried hidden;
head of Goliath symbol for serpent crushed
heal wound rose in three days Satan defeated;

Battle won blood of Light crushed Satan under foot!
The Word of God strikes nations in abyss dragon will be put!
Thousand years ended Satan will be freed to mislead!
Fire defeated into lake of fire sulphur the Devil will be hurled! Revelation.

David (in answer to Johan Steyn)

When David felled Goliath
he stood there as a young man
putting his trust
in the almighty God.

As a soldier totally incompetent
he could not even walk
in Saul’s armour,
did not even take along his own sword

but with a slingshot
he defied the giant champion of the Philistines
slinging a stone at a precise angle into the air
and with the giant’s sword chopped off his head.

When David cut a piece from the cloak
of king Saul, it wasn’t meant as a joke
but to show that the life of Saul
was in David’s hands.

That David was attracted to women,
nobody can deny, the ancestor of Christ
Bathsheba is a witness of it
and his love for Jonathan

was no carnal thing,
they were friends, who were comrades,
nearer than brothers to each other
and many men

who went with each other through battles
against deadly enemies
know this type of thing
when you have to leave your life
in someone else’s hands.

That the psalm poet David
was also a soldier
does not make him a mass murderer,
or do you want to fit

every man who once was a soldier
and now write poems
into this distorted picture?

So as if soldiers are not also Christians,
also serve God, also pray
cannot have a relationship
with Him?

Go and read what the Bible says
about people who add words,
or leave words out of it,
maybe it also pertains

to when you twist the Bible stories,
to fit to
your own impressions of life.

Blue

Every day it seems my smile's a little harder
And every day, i seem to laugh a little less
Living this way, it seems my sky's a little darker
You went away and left me lonely in success
(can't you see i'm falling apart) (repeat)
Can't you see what's happenin' to me
Take this hand and show my fingers where my heart is
Understand, you may just save me from despair
Watch this man, you'll see he can't stop what he has started
Take this hand, you'll see right now there's no-one there
(can't you see i'm falling apart)
You laugh at me as i fall
(can't you see i'm falling apart)
Just tell me, tell me, give me one good reason
Armed with love, i could save my heart
But on my own i just can't make it
I'm too weak to fight, so take it
Armed with love, i could save my heart
But instead i watch you die
Armed with love, i could save my heart
But on my own i just can't make it
I'm too weak to fight, so take it
Armed with love, i could save my heart
Tell me why an i so blue.

God Can’t Be Beaten

Satan the world has so deceived
Through wanton lust for sin
But faith, the gift through Christ’s received
Will see God’s children win

True knowledge that the Lord is real
We purchase through belief
When in due course God’s strength we feel
It’s then to Satan’s grief

The devil tries to keep us blind
The truth he seeks to hide
But God is never hard to find
With Jesus as our guide

We need but come to seek His face
The Lord who’s true and just
Will wrap us in His warm embrace
To Satan’s sheer disgust

Power through prayer will Christ bestow
To cast the foe from sight
Though God at times may seem us slow
His timing’s always right

Satan would have us think him dead
So man from Christ would stray
But those who hold the Lord has said
Will live to win the day

Through faith alone our God we trust
Through faith, the Lord we please
Faith also brings to eat the dust
The devil to his knees

Through Christ who is who’s first and last
Who lives though once was dead
When Satan tells you of your past
Remind Him what’s ahead.

Today... 'The Captain of the Lord's hosts

When to Joshua You first appeared
Worshipping You he trembled and feared
For he was standing on Holy ground
And the shoes from his feet he unbound.

No enemy on earth or in hell
can withstand Your power or prevail
Satan and his minions take flight.
and flee with great trembling from the fight.

Over death You've won the victory
receiving all the honour and glory
The Captain of the Lord's Hosts arose
and conquered Satan and all His foes.

When I stand on the holiest ground
and there in Your presence I am found
'My Lord and my God' I will declare
and remove my shoes as I stand there.

With my face turned to the ground in fright
lost in wonder at my Captains sight
Then as Your comforting word I hear
it will removes all my guilt and fear.

The Captain of the Lord's hosts has died
To make me His own was crucified
Then in mighty power He arose
winning victory over His foes

Great Captain of the Angel armies
when You advance the enemy flees
No foe can withstand The Captains might
and Satan is banished from His sight

The Exorcists

Then the apostle wonders wrought,
And healed the sick, in Jesus' name;
The sons of Sceva vainly thought
That they had pow'r to do the fame.

On one possessed they tried their art,
And naming Jesus preached by Paul,
They charged the spirit to depart
Expecting he'd obey their call.

The spirit answered, with a mock,
Jesus I know; and Paul I know;
I must have gone if Paul had spoke;
But who are ye that bid me go?

With fury then the man he filled,
Who on the poor pretenders flew;
Naked and wounded, almost killed,
They fled in all the peoples' view.

Jesus! that name, pronounced by faith,
Is full of wonder-working pow'r;
It conquers Satan, sin and death,
And cheers in trouble's darkest hour.

But they, who are not born again,
Know nothing of it but the sound;
They do but take his name in vain
When most their zeal and pains abound.

Satan their vain attempts derides,
Whether they talk, or pray, or preach;
Long as the love of sin abides,
His pow'r is safe beyond their reach.

But you, believers, may rejoice,
Satan well knows your mighty Friend;
He trembles at your Saviour's voice,
And owns he cannot gain his end.

Bible Stories: Job (Chapter II)

When angels came before Yahweh,
Satan too joined them again.

The Lord asked him, “Whence do you come? ”
And Satan told, “By roaming earth,
And going on lands, back and forth.”

God asked, “Did you notice my servant Job?
There’s none like him upon the earth! ”
“You ruined Job without a cause! ”

And Satan answered Lord and said,
“Man gives all things to save his life;
Just touch his body, he’ll curse God.”

So, God placed Job in Satan’s hands;
‘Just spare his life, ’ God warned Satan.

So, Satan went from Lord’s presence,
And caused Job boils from head to foot;
Job took a potsherd to scrape with
And sat amongst the ashes sad.

His wife advised, “Curse God and die! ”
Job told her not to be foolish.
“When good things come, we praise the Lord.”
“Why shouldn’t some evil come? ” asked Job.
In all this, Job didn’t sin by word!

Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar-
Good friends of Job, heard the sad news,
And rushed to mourn and console him!

From far, they couldn’t recognize Job;
They wept aloud and tore their cloaks;
They sprinkled dust upon their heads;
And sat with him upon the ground,
For seven days and nights, speechless.
They saw his grief was very great!

The Good Fight

By: jimmy buffett, j.d. souther
1980
To muhammed ali for twenty years of excitement and entertainment
They talk about their women too much
The women got em so confused
They dont talk about their lives as such
My life is all I got to lose
You take it with a grain of salt
And laugh at the complexities
Theyre good at pickin all the faults
I keep laughin so they dont pick me
Chorus:
Jesus if I had to quit tonight
Id never know if I was wrong or right
But thats just what you get
You got to go the distance
If you want to fight a good fight
Good fight
Keep it up and keep a good fight
Good fight
The telephone begins to ring
That could only be one call
I might as well be on the moon
Standin in the shower stall
Cant believe she picked it up
She didnt know the rules somehow
Then I hear her say hello (hello)
Panic in the grey room now
Chorus:
Jesus if I had to quit tonight
Shed kill me whether I was wrong or right
Thats just what you get
You got to go the distance
If you want to fight a good fight
Good fight
Keep it up and keep a good fight
Good fight
You never know until you try
Its hard to see the side youre on
Some people say Im halfway here
Some people say Im halfway gone
Chorus:
Jesus if I had to quit tonight
Id never know if I was wrong or right
But thats just what you get
You got to go the distance
If you want to fight a good fight
Good fight
Keep it up and keep a good fight
Good fight
All I want is just a good fight
Good fight
Yes its got to be a good fight
Good fight

What Will Be Your Reward On Judgement Day?

All who choose their religion atheism.

Choose disbelief in the existence
of God. Non-belief these choose.

What when your final judgement has
been passed will Satan say to you?

Atheism was your deliberate choice.
Scepticism was your deliberate choice.
Desires of heart your deliberate choice.

Revelation. All the promises God made
were true all Satan made were lies.

Satan also made promises not kept not any.

Satan had no power over you.
Satan will abstain accept no blame.
Satan will claim he did nothing but tempt you.

Satan will say I did nothing but offer my way
you accepted my invitation in love of money.

Satan will say suckers blame not me blame yourselves.

On Judgement Day Satan will not help fallen you.
On Judgement Day Satan cannot help himself.
Nor can Satan help any of his millions of demons.

Satan will dissociate
himself from partnership
in all your sin before God.

Satan will demand
your wrong doing receive
a grievous torment.

Atheist, non-believer,
chooser of sweet tempting sin,
to your criminal plea;

that it was deceiver Satan,
who lead you astray,
Satan will plead guilty.

God made you promises.
God gave you warnings.
In conscience of your heart.

Satan also made promises.
Now proven to be false.

Satan will confess
all his promises

were deception

false assurances
of sweet prosperity.

Woe to the fallen
beguiled by greed.
Enticed in snare
great expectations.

Did not Satan assure you
that there was no life?
In an eternal Hereafter?

Did not Satan deceive you
into rejecting Jesus Christ?
His paid innocent blood sacrifice
as intercession for all your sin?

Not all worshipper offerings
are acceptable before God.
Ten commandments warned

you may not freely do whatever you please.
It is written there are consequences.
It is written a Day of Judgement will come.

Stories of love, faith, hate, honor and duty,
Obedience, war, heroes, history and crime.

I've performed my gift on T.V. and radio
Before millions I've never met.
Preached my praise of God and country
With 465 poems on the net.

Satan's soldiers, shepherds and bards
Spew forth their foulness and grief.
They attack the joy and goodness of man
Dishonoring life, family, country and belief.

Prospering through work, love and conviction
Enables us to remain whole and how we should be.
Fortifying our soul with fulfillment of faith
Lets our worst tribulations be shouldered by Thee.

Moses, Samson, David, Solomon and Jonah
All failed God in their own human way.
He chose to forgive them and bless their powers
So they might dwell in hearts of man today.

Without God's grace, wisdom and glorious domain
There's no doubt all would soon cease to survive.
Through purpose, morals and Christian conviction
We are able to transform and keep hope alive.

SOLDIER FOR THE LORD

I'm a soldier for the Lord
Who's been up and who's been down
Though while on the battlefield
I have never turned around.

I face more than flesh and blood
With the devil's evil hoard.
But they shall not steal my soul
For I swing my Lord's swift sword.

I wear all of God's armor
With helmet, breastplate and shield.
As Satan's arrows fly by
From his archers of the field.

The devil casts his dark net
Over any he may charm.
He'll lead them from salvation
With his hands upon their arm.

I battle evil daily
And I pray that you'll join me.
We're not alone in this world
For we're loved and watched by Thee.

Looking Unto Jesus

By various maxims, forms and rules,
That pass for wisdom in the schools,
I strove my passion to restrain;
But all my efforts proved in vain.

But since the Saviour I have known
My rules are all reduced to one;
To keep my Lord, by faith, in view,
This strength supplies and motives too.

I see him lead a suff'ring life,
Patient, amidst reproach and strife;
And from his pattern courage take
To bear, and suffer, for his sake.

Upon the cross I see him bleed,
And by the sight from guilt am freed;
This sight destroys the life of sin,
And quickens heav'nly life within.

To look to Jesus as he rose
Confirms my faith, disarms my foes;
Satan I shame and overcome,
By pointing to my Saviour's tomb.

Exalted on his glorious throne,
I see him make my cause his own;
Then all my anxious cares subside,
For Jesus lives, and will provide.

I see him look with pity down,
And hold in view the conqu'ror's crown;
If pressed with griefs and cares before,
My soul revives, nor asks for more.

By faith I see the hour at hand
When in his presence I shall stand;
Then it will be my endless bliss,
To see him where, and as he is.
