Phoebe Prince

An immigrant from County Clare
brought to this harsher clime-
Phoebe Prince, an Irish rose,
a gentle heart and mind.

First used, and then discarded
by one boy, then another.-
Object of the mean girl’s scorn
Phoebe was “the outsider”
On the last day of her short life
They hounded her from school.
The girl they called the “Irish slut”
was made to feel the fool..

Her sister, Lauren, found her body
hanging lifeless in the hall.
Befriended by nobody
Phoebe chose to end it all

And on the day they held her wake
Those monsters held their dance
A debutante cotillion
for a troop of soulless tramps.

She’s buried here in County Clare
because the Ocean's waves
separate her from the harpies
who drove her to the grave

The Coming of Phoebe

When buckets shine 'gainst maple trees
And dropp by dropp the sap doth flow,
When days are warm, but still nights freeze,
And deep in woods lie drifts of snow,
When cattle low and fret in stall,
Then morning brings the phoebe's call,
'phoebe,
phoebe, phoebe,' a cheery note,
While cackling hens make such a rout.

When snowbanks run, and hills are bare,
And early bees hum round the hive,
When woodchucks creep from out their lair
Right glad to find themselves alive,
When sheep go nibbling through the fields,
Then phoebe oft her name reveals,
'phoebe,
phoebe, phoebe,' a plaintive cry,
While jack-snipes call in morning sky.

When wild ducks quack in creek and pond
And bluebirds perch on mullein-stalks,
When spring has burst her icy bond
And in brown fields the sleek crow walks,
When chipmunks court in roadside walls,
Then phoebe from the ridgeboard calls,
'phoebe,
phoebe, phoebe,' and lifts her cap,
While smoking Dick doth boil the sap.

Wild Irish Rose

In a field by a river
My love and I did lie
And on my naked shoulder
She too proud to cry
She said that I must leave her
An icy tear she froze
How could I melt the heart
Of a wild irish rose
Well a gypsy she has made of me
A servent of the street
And back to bed Ive travelled
To taste a love as sweet
Well the heart it knows no reasons
And reason never knows
As I lie with them Im thinking
Of a wild irish rose
Well I saw the city of angels
It brought a devil out in me
And hells hotel on sunset
Showed a whore no mercy
As the orange sky was screaming
From the roof I let her go
These are the dizzying heights that brought me
My wild irish rose
Now red is the rose
That she layed on my grave
A life is what she wanted
And a life I surely gave
Like a hundred men before me
They lay lying here in rows
Young men, bloody
As a wild irish rose

My Irish Granny

A Tribute To My Irish Granny

By Marie Hurst on 17 June 2011

land of my grt grt grt grandmother beckon to me

Lure me home over the Irish sea

There with eyes of pure emerald green

My granny once walked, my Irish queen

Mary I never knew you, I wish I had

You died long before for that am sad

All I know is you where my granny

my Irish queen.

from County Derry, Where I have never been

Let the Irish music play so sweet

let the shamrocks be crushed not by my feet

For I am the outsider, born in the UK

yet I would love to be Irish Just for a day

Mary Glendenning born in 1836 I love you

I have never seen your home land

But May God Bless You

To Phoebe

"GENTLE, modest little flower,
Sweet epitome of May,
Love me but for half an hour,
Love me, love me, little fay."
Sentences so fiercely flaming
In your tiny shell-like ear,
I should always be exclaiming
If I loved you, PHOEBE dear.

"Smiles that thrill from any distance
Shed upon me while I sing!
Please ecstaticize existence,
Love me, oh, thou fairy thing!"
Words like these, outpouring sadly
You'd perpetually hear,
If I loved you fondly, madly; -
But I do not, PHOEBE dear.

The Changes At The Un

I spent my youth with a gun and a dog in the fields of Clare,
Hunting rabbits and pheasants and ducks and fast running hare,
So the long tail feathers of the cock pheasants, I knew well,
Then I became a member Canadian navel personnel.

At the UN in the mid 50s looking down from balcony,
A pheasant feather in a lady’s hat amid UN pageantry,
Sitting down there at the Irish desk but she didn’t care,
That the face on the balcony came all the way from County Clare.

But those were the days when the UN had a very good name,
Not like nowadays when so many tend to viciously complain,
But that was very long ago and I was much younger then,
Am I the only one who noticed the change, now among the old men?

Darlington County

Driving in to darlington county
Me and wayne on the fourth of july
Driving in to darlington county
Looking for some work on the county line
We drove down from new york city
Where the girls are pretty but they just want to know your name
Driving in to darlington city
Got a union connection with an uncle of waynes
We drove eight hundred miles without seeing a cop
We got rock and roll music blasting off the t-top singing
Sha la la la la la la la la, sha la la la la la la
Hey little girl standing on the corner
Todays your lucky day for sure all right
Me and my buddy were from new york city
We got two hundred dollars we want to rock all night
Girl youre looking at two big spenders
Why the world dont know what me and wayne might do
Our pas each own one of the world trade centers
For a kiss and a smile Ill give mine all to you
Come on baby take a seat on my fender
Its a long night and tell me what else were you gonna do
Just me and you we could
Sha la la...
Little girl sitting in the window
Aint seen my buddy in seven days
County man tells me the same thing
He dont work and he dont get paid
Little girl youre so young and pretty
Walk with me and you can have your way
And well leave this darlington city
For a ride down that dixie highway
Driving out of darlington county
My eyes seen the glory of the coming of the lord
Driving out of darlington county
Seen wayne handcuffed to the bumper of a state troopers ford
Sha la la...

My Little Brown Haired Girl

I keep a looking for my little brown haired girl
I've searched, I've looked all over the world for her
I've even been to county down
and even though you know how that story goes
mines different cause I had her
I lost her and now can't find my Rose.

I keep a looking for my little brown haired girl
I have the words I didn't express
the importance of you to me I did not stress
instead I did let my stress stop me from loving you my best
so I'm saving to buy a car, and I'm a heading a west.

I keep a looking for my little brown haired girl
cause when you are a boy, you know all boys wanna be men,
thinking of the time when we first met
the times together I will never forget them
I can't help but wonder if I'll ever look into your green eyes agen.

I keep a looking for my little brown haired girl
I'm dressed in my Sunday clothes
but I just look like a somebody nobody knows
when I was in county down I couldn't find you so I got you a rose
so if I knock on the door of your room please don't keep it closed.

Because I keep a looking for my little brown haired girl
there are many familiar in this world, but none like her
cause if you wanna walk towards me without her smile
I'll be telling you for more than a mile, you can run on
because when I see my little brown haired girl
I see she is now a young brown haired woman.

The Rapping Fool

I was sitting here with not a thing to do
So I wrote this story just for you.

Walking to school with my head held down
Listening to my mp playing the hip hop sound.

(FOR A GUY) Checking out these fine young ladies
Just one look and they drove me crazy.

(FOR A GIRL) checking out these fine young men
They looked like they was heaven sent.

I got to school and security was there
They said dmz was here.
He was telling us to stay in school
Cause you don’t want to play the fool.
If you want to be something in life
Then you better think twice.
Then he asked: if this happened to you
What do you think you would do?

What do you do when you have a woman
Who gives you so many excuses, so many lies
Tearing up friendships, breaking all ties.
she said she loved me and that was her plan
To use me to get to another man.

I told her:
I poured out my heart to you
to show your sincerity- you did the same thing too.
How easy it is for you to tell these lies
In that you can’t deny.
You would do anything to achieve that goal
To the devil “ would you sell your soul.”?

These things happen to us all
Even the rich and famous- we do fall.
Stay in school and make a life with someone
That you truly love
and thank the lord from above.
Not all of us can get into the music world
And it’s not a life for a young boy or girl
Your life you will live out of a suitcase
And your family will never get to see your face.

Rappers have a short musical span
So they try to get all they can.
For my age, I still rock
Gotten so good I stopped the clock.
They say I’m a rapping fool
For my age I’m pretty cool.
Now I could rap with the best
I just have to write it down
And I’ll pass the test.

Summer Time Love

I’m sorry, you’re not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong, but I’m in love with your sister

Do you recall when we barbecued at the beach,
Your sister was wearing a swimsuit, she’s so beautiful.
Your sister’s got that angel effect, it can’t be helped
I’m falling to her, I’m losing restrain

I’m sorry, you’re not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong, but I’m in love with your sister

Do you remember when we were at the theater,
Your sister was sitting next to me, she’s so entertaining
Your sister’s got the sunshine effect, it’s so scenic
I can’t get her off my mind, I’m addicted

I’m sorry, you’re not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong, but I’m in love with your sister

Do you remember when I drove your sister to school,
Your sister was in my arms for the first time, she’s so captivating
Your sister and I took off, we didn’t get back till the next day
I’ve fallen for her, I lost all ideals

I’m sorry, you’re not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong, but I’m in love with your sister

Do you remember when I vacationed with your sister,
Your sister was in love with me for the first time, she’s so perfect
Your sister’s got the marry me girl effect, it can’t be rejected
I’m chained to her now, I’m impassive

I know it might’ve been a waste, everything that I aimed for
I’m in love with your sister and It doesn’t matter anymore,
I don’t know how to confess this to you, I don’t care
Can’t you see that you’re just not the girl for me?

It might seem like a temporary fantasy
I know it might be wrong, but I’m in love with your sister

Outsider

The many childhood memories that I have
are lonely ones of being an outsider.
I never mixed very well
and was always the last one,
other children wanted to call a friend.
I was a quiet person
who spent much of his time alone
buried deep within his own thoughts.
At classes, I always got the lowest grades,
on vacation I almost always was on my own.
I would sit for hours just pondering on my thoughts.
I never grew out of being an outsider,
different from the rest.
My early life was over shadowed
by younger sister whom my parents adored.
Every achievement that I made
my sister could do it better.
Not only was I an outsider at school,
but also at home a well.
In 1959, I left the shores
of the place I called home
to go back to the place of my birth.
Not until forty-two years later
would, I set foot on that soil again.
Things in the world had changed,
but not so much for me
as I was still a stranger
in the land I called my home.

For better or worse

I say Phoebe do not force it.
It won’t fit inside your corset.
Those rolls of fat that wobble so
are adamant they will not go.
They do not wish to be constrained.
’t was better far you had remained.
The slim young girl you used to be
and given up on gluttony
Those sweets which you enjoyed so much
have added weight, well just a touch.
Oh Blast it I’ll speak honestly
You are as fat as fat can be.
But I don’t care I love you still
There’s more of you my arms to fill.

The girl of my dreams

I met the girl of my dreams
I held her, I love her, but that wasn’t a dream
She made me feel so special inside
Now I feel like a failure inside

The girl of my dreams was so pretty and pure
The girl of my dreams was so perfect
The girl in my dreams is everything I want
The girl in my dreams is everything that is right
The girl in my dreams talked with me
The girl in my dreams is named Dee
The girl in my dreams showed me who I am
The girl in my dreams showed me what love is
The girl in my dreams showed me how to love
The girl in my dreams I love so much

The girl of my dreams I love you so
The girl of my dreams I hate that you let go
The girl of my dreams you are so rare
The girl of my dreams you for me

The girl of my dreams without life doesn’t seem right
The girl of my dreams without you why put up the fight
The girl of my dreams without you I am not whole
The girl of my dreams without you I feel like I am in a hole.
The girl of my dreams, you are for me
The girl of my dreams is Dee.

Stole your life

He destroyed your confidence, girl,
He’s the cause of your pain, girl
You got to be stronger than that, girl
Innocent girl you once were.

He stole your innocence, girl,
He took your love, girl
He buried it with others, girl,
Loving girl you once were.

He tore apart your faith, girl.
He turned everyone against you, girl.
He made your parents not trust you, girl.
Worthy girl you once were.

He took your life, girl.
Gave it a new name, girl,
He drew your blood, girl,
Living girl you once were.

I Am Not that Girl...

I am not that girl
You once new
I am not that girl that
Ran every time life gave her troubles
I am not that girl
That needed a boost of courage from a line or drink
I am not that girl
Who cried every time you said goodbye to her
I am not that girl
Held on every word you said to her
I am not that girl
Who begged for your approval
I am not that girl
Who did not know right from wrong
I am not that girl.
Who mind was cloudy with shame of the past
I am not that girl
Doped up
I am not that girl
Who walked around with eyes closed
I am not that girl
