Musical magic a logarhyme

The ancient harper starts to play.
All background noises fade away.
We sit spell bound

We are transported to the past.
Times iron rule is overcast
by his sweet sounds.

The present ceases to exist.
The silver notes will long persist
to be profound.

The ancient harper cannot see.
His eyes don’t work effectively
He can’t look round.

But we can see and we can hear.
We’re privileged to be here.
Applause resounds.

The harper starts to play again
A soft and gentle sweet refrain.
I am dumbfound.

As are the whole audience
The music holds us in suspense.
We are held bound

By the spell the harper weaves
and will be til the harper leaves.
We’re still spell bound.

Joe Harper Saturday Morning

Well you thought I was a stranger when you looked upon me, when I came by
But to take you from disaster I cannot master, (the four winds...shy ? ? ? )
And the roamin in the gloamin you have brought, and set before me
And I think that its an omen, Im just not what so many people see.
And you shine your glory all around
Do not disguise what we did
I asked you for half a pound, and you said -
Go see joe harper, saturday morning, kid
Go see joe harper, saturday morning, kid.
And the child held a ball in the garden, with the old queen
And you kissed the lips and heart in all the (stranger? ), you know what I mean
And you walked on in the streets all lonely, in your own childish way
And you thought that you would only - do it for today.
And you shine your glory all around
Do not disguise what we did
I asked you for half a pound, and you said -
Go see joe harper, saturday morning, kid
Go see joe harper, saturday morning, kid.
And just went outside the club and the rain came down on his head and it got all soaking wet.
He said go for yourself, I said I know, sure joe, I aint conquered yet
And I walked away from the backstreets and the rain, and the (song? ), how many times have I died?
And we turned on outside of the bus shelter and I jumped on and said goodbye.
And I shine my glory all around
Do not disguise what I did
Tried to keep it underground and they said -
Go see joe harper, saturday morning, kid
You gotta, go see joe harper, saturday morning, saturday morning...

Harper Valley Pta

I want to tell you all a story bout a harper valley widow wife
Who had a teenage daughter that attended harper valley junior high
Well her daughter came home one afternoon and didnt even stop to play
And she said, mama, Ive got a note here from the harper valley pta
Well the note says mrs. johnson, youre wearing your dresses way too high
Its been reported youve been drinkin and a runnin round with men and goin wild
Now we dont believe you ought to be a bringin up your little girl this way
And it was signed by the secretary, harper valley pta
Well it happened that the pta was gonna meet that very afternoon
And boy, were they surprised as mrs. johnson wore her miniskirt into the room
And as she walked up to the blackboard I can still recall the word she had to say
She said Id like to address this meeting of the harper valley pta
Now theres bobby taylor sittin there and seven times hes asked me for a date
And mrs. taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever hes away
And mr. baker can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town
And shouldnt widow jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down
Now mr. harper couldnt be here cause hes stayed too long in kellys bar again
And if you smell shirley thompsons breath youll find shes had a little nip of gin
And then you have the nerve to tell me as a mother you think that I aint fit
Well this is just a little payton place and youre all harper valley hypocrits
Now I wouldnt put you on because it really did, it happened just this way
That day my mama socked it to the harper valley pta
That day my mama socked it to em at the harper valley pta

Turlough Carolan

He was blind and illiterate that much of him we know
And still his music is with us from centuries ago
He had creative genius and his genius still shine through
A rare gem Turlough Carolan one of the chosen few.

The harper of the county Meath in music live today
His music known around the World in Countries far away
And Carolan's concerto still very much alive
The only test of genius is when their work survive.

The only test of genius is when their work live on
For centuries and centuries when they are dead and gone
And Carolan has passed that test a name to celebrate
His music live three hundred years the genius of the great.

A son of peasant parents and destined to be poor
And though addicted to alcohol his genius remained pure
I like that saying it says it all 'can't keep a good man down'
And the name of Turlough Carolan was destined for renown.

I just switched on the radio to hear the D.J. say
This is a tune from Ireland from Ireland far away
Carolan's farewell to music, oh let the music play
The music of the harper the harper lives today.

The Hogarth Experiment Part 3

Police Constable Broadworth
was sent from the station
to go to see if he could locate Joe Harper
after a frantic phone call from his surgery.
It would seem as if he had missed
several of his appointments,
which was not like Joe at all.
He cycled down the same lane
where Joe Harper’s car was parked.
He could hear his car still running.
The scene that greeted him
was not he had expected.
The car was in the lane,
but Joe Harper was no where about.
Broadworth shouted out his name,
but got no reply.
Broadworth dismounted from his bike.
He felt it strange that Jo Harper
would have left his car running.
Broadworth searched the area
after turning off the engine of the car.
Joe Harper was nowhere to be found.
It was as if he had vanished into thin air.
He put his bike in the back of the car,
then drove it to the nearest farm
and telephoned the station
to inform them what he had found.

Even though the war was over
the battery near the town
was still occupied by three men.
It was about a half a mile from the hamlet.
The three privates there
were brewing themselves a cup of tea.
A humming sound unlike anything
they had ever heard grew louder.
They stood up and grabbed their rifles.
They gazed around,
but nothing could they see.
Suddenly shadows passed over them.
Each felt a chill run down their spine.
They loaded theirs rifles and fired
as the shadows came overhead again.
They reloaded and fired a second volley.
The humming sound got louder
as if it was amplified a thousand times.
After they fired each volley
one of the soldiers fell.
There seemed no defence
from these shadows from the sky.

Susan When She Tried

(words & music by don reid)
I got over charlotte thompson, goldie johnson,
Lord they done me wrong
I took it hard with peggy harper
She hurt me bad, but not for long
Theres just one I remember
Makes me feel funny down inside
Id trade em all for just one hour
Of susan when she tried
No theres never been a woman
Who could make me weak inside
And give me what I needed
Like susan when she tried
It gets worse in the summer
When the nights are hot and long
And its bad in december
When they play those christmas songs
So if you ask me and I dont tell you
Bet your sweet bottom dollar I lied
cause theres never been one better
Than susan when she tried

Wind in the trees for Friend Thad

The winds play haunting melodies
Upon the branches of bare trees
From which they pluck the notes they seek.
Each composition is unique.

The music that the wind can play
is different in every way.
From any score that humans write.
Holds me entranced in sheer delight.

Soft sad laments which seem to be
expressing sorrow endlessly
But these sad notes can segue into
a lively beat so you want to

Clap your hands and tap your feet
entranced by the hypnotic beat.
The music changes constantly
a show of virtuosity

That doesn’t need an audience
Although some times I seem to sense
that is playing just for me
To which I listen gratefully

It plays the tunes that suit my mood
as if the wind well understood
I'm sometimes happy sometimes sad
depending on the day I’ve had.

I know quite well the wind is free
and is not playing just for me.
It does no harm if I pretend
the wind regards me as a friend.

Although it has no reason to
I think perhaps it might be true
I am content to listen to
its haunting music so I do.

Samuel Johnson

Parody of a Translation from the Medea of Euripides

Ere shall they not, who resolute explore
Times gloomy backward with judicious eyes;
And scanning right the practice of yore,
Shall deem our hoar progenitors unwise.

They to the dome where smoke with curling play
Announced the dinner to the regions round,
Summon'd the singer blithe, and harper gay,
And aided wine with dulcet-streaming sound.

The better use of notes, or sweet or shrill,
By quivering string or modulated wind;
Trumpet or lyre - to their harsh bosoms chill
Admission ne'er had sought, or could not find.

Oh! send them to the sullen mansions dun,
Her baleful eyes where sorrow rolls around;
Where gloom-enamour'd mischief loves to dwell
And murder, all blood-bolter'd, schemes the wound.

When cates luxuriant pile the spacious dish,
And purple nectar glads the festive hour;
The guest, without a want, without a wish,
Can yield no room to music's soothing power.
