Hvil sødt!
Som var Du lagt i Dødens Skriin
Du min Erindrings Rose faur og fiin,
Du er ei Verdens meer, Du er kun min;
For Dig jeg synger, mine Taarer trille,
Natten er smuk, Natten er stille; -

Dødt! — Alt er dødt!

Hvil sødt!
Hvert Barn i Ly af „Fader vor",
Du Lidende, i Søvnen Sundhed groer,
Og Du som elsker, haaber, barnligt troer,
Gid ingen Drøm Dig ved Din Lykke skille;

The Fall of Jock Gillespie

This fell when dinner-time was done --
'Twixt the first an' the second rub --
That oor mon Jock cam' hame again
To his rooms ahist the Club.

An' syne he laughed, an' syne he sang,
An' syne we thocht him fou,
An' syne he trumped his partner's trick,
An' garred his partner rue.

Then up and spake an elder mon,
That held the Spade its Ace --
God save the lad! Whence comes the licht
"That wimples on his face?"

An' Jock he sniggered, an' Jock he smiled,
An' ower the card-brim wunk: --
"I'm a' too fresh fra' the stirrup-peg,
"May be that I am drunk."

"There's whusky brewed in Galashils
"An' L. L. L. forbye;
"But never liquor lit the lowe
"That keeks fra' oot your eye.

"There's a third o' hair on your dress-coat breast,
"Aboon the heart a wee?"
"Oh! that is fra' the lang-haired Skye
"That slobbers ower me."

"Oh! lang-haired Skyes are lovin' beasts,
"An' terrier dogs are fair,
"But never yet was terrier born,
"Wi' ell-lang gowden hair!

"There's a smirch o' pouther on your breast,
"Below the left lappel?"
"Oh! that is fra' my auld cigar,
"Whenas the stump-end fell."

"Mon Jock, ye smoke the Trichi coarse,
"For ye are short o' cash,
"An' best Havanas Couldna leave
"Sae white an' pure an ash.

"This nicht ye stopped a story braid,
"An' stopped it wi' a curse.
"Last nicht ye told that tale yoursel' --
"An' capped it wi' a worse!

"Oh! we're no fou! Oh! we're no fou!
"But plainly we can ken
"Ye're fallin', fallin' fra the band
"O' cantie single men!"

An' it fell when sirris-shaws were sere,
An' the nichts were lang and mirk,
In braw new breeks, wi' a gowden ring,
Oor Jocke gaed to the Kirk!

Langelandsk Folkemelodi

Hun mig har glemt! min Sorg hun ei see!
Ung Elskovs Død gjør Hjertet saa Vee!
Jeg vil gaae min lystig Gang,
Solen skinner jo Dagen lang,
Droslen fløiter sin Sang.

Hun mig har glemt! min Sorg hun ei see!
Ung Elskovs Død gjør Hjertet saa Vee!
Vinden bærer fra Hjemmets Ø;
Ud, derud paa den aabne Sø.
Alle Griller skal døe!

Hun mig har glemt! min Sorg hun ei see!
Ung Elskovs Død gjør Hjertet saa Vee!
Nye Lande jeg snart skal see,
Øiet græd, men nu skal det lee,
Selv om Hjertet har Vee!

Hun mig har glemt! min Sorg hun ei see!
Ung Elskovs Død gjør Hjertet saa Vee!
Solen skinner jo Dagen lang,
Maanen taus gaaer sin gamle Gang,
Hjertets Sorg bliver Sang.

When We Lived In Lang Lang 'For Ed

I often think about my childhood day
Long before they built the South Gippsland highway
On gum tree by our house old magpie sang
As shades of night went creeping o'er Lang Lang.

When I was seven years or thereabout
Before mum and dad brought me with them to Richmond south
To Richmond south one hundred kilometres away
From Lang Lang of my early childhhood day.

My father yielded to the City's call
He sold our farmlet little cot and all
A decision he never did regret
Though childhood memories linger with me yet.

A dairy farmer bought our piece of land
And walls of old cottage are all that stand
And age has claimed old gum where magpie sang
In our backyard when we lived in Lang Lang.

The Poet's Song

I HID in the world and sang,
And I sang so loud and long
That all the ages rang
With the music of my song.
I sang of the earth and sky,
5
I sang of the whispering seas,
I sang of the mountains high,
And I sang of the flowers and trees;
I sang of the early spring,
I sang of the dawning day,
10
I sang, for I had to sing
As the young lambs have to play;
Till heaven and earth were ringing,
And all the people heard,
And they said, "We love his singing,
15
For his song is the song of the bird."

Legends

I

A MAN builded a bugle for the storms to blow.
The focused winds hurled him afar.
He said that the instrument was a failure.

II

When the suicide arrived at the sky, the people there asked him: "Why?"
He replied: "Because no one admired me."

III

A man said: "Thou tree!"
The tree answered with the same scorn: "Thou man!
Thou art greater than I only in thy possibilities."

IV

A warrior stood upon a peak and defied the stars.
A little magpie, happening there, desired the soldier's plume, and so plucked it.

V

The wind that waves the blossoms sang, sang, sang from age to age.
The flowers were made curious by this joy.
"Oh, wind," they said, "why sing you at your labour, while we, pink beneficiaries, sing not, but idle, idle, idle from age to age?"

Sometimes you gotta get touch
I got me a bunch of boys when the going gets rough
Someone to lean on when their calling my bluff
Someone to .....
Talking about R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang
There were only your friends who died ??
Well now the boy wanna run out with the boys tonight
And the girls are on the corner in a fashion show all right
I got their allmoter dead on my right
You better get great protect on this cool old night
Talking about R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang
There were only your friends who died ??
Well now, if there's a moral to be told
Its just that, growin' up is to growin' old
And when the asses say yeah, I'm doing all right
Well I got my bunch of boys, its Saturday night
Talking about R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang

Frogs in chorus

The chorus frogs in the big lagoon
Would sing their songs to the silvery moon.
Tenor singers were out of place,
For every frog was a double bass.
But never a human chorus yet
Could beat the accurate time they set.
The solo singer began the joke;
He sang, "As long as I live I'll croak,
Croak, I'll croak,"
And the chorus followed him: "Croak, croak, croak!"

The poet frog, in his plaintive tone,
Sang of a sorrow was all his own;
"How shall I win to my heart's desire?
How shall I feel my spirit's fire?"
And the solo frog in his deepest croak,
"To fire your spirit," he sang, "eat coke,
Coke, eat coke,"
And the chorus followed him: "Coke, coke, coke!"

The green frog sat in a swampy spot
And he sang the song of he knew not what.
"The world is rotten, oh cursed plight,
That I am the frog that must set it right.
How shall I scatter the shades that lurk?"
And the old man bullfrog sang, "Get work,
Work, get work,"
And the chorus followed him: "Work, work, work!"

The soaring spirits that fain would fly
On wings of hope to the starry sky
Must face the snarls of the jealous dogs,
For the world is ruled by its chorus frogs.

I forrige Krig, da Soldaten kom hjem,
Stor Festlighed Byerne gjorde,

Langt mere i Danmarks Kamp denne Gang,
End Mange betænke og vide.

„Hav Tak!" det siger vort Hjertelag,
Det vil i hvert Haandtryk Du kjende.
— Og saa vil vi sjunge om „Atterdag";
Den Sang er ei skrevet tilende.

I Gud er Fremtid! „Han gav, han tog",
Han kan skrive paa Danskens Skjolde:
„Atter plantedes Danebrog
Paa Thyras gjenreiste Volde."

Blessing In Disguise (ayhan?)

katingalahan sang kalibutan subong
diri sa lugar ko
sa lupang hinirang
ang mga tao
daw lain na gid
sang una ya
ang mga bata nga gagmay
ga piko pa kag ga chinese garter
pero subong
kabalo na mag pangulorete sang guya
kung kis-a
galakat ko sa dalan
kita ko mga bata nga mga lalaki
edad 12
gapanigarilyo na
ang bata nga babaye
edad 14
abaw sa jeep
gasakay may upod nga lalaki
kag naga kup'anay gid
hambal sang tao nga naistorya ko
blessing in disguise lang daw na
kay gina tilawan na sang mga bata
ang mga indi mayo nga butang
samtang bata pa sila
pero kung mag tigulang na sila
mag edad mga 18 asta 90
kung kalab'ot pa
natak'an na mag himo sang sala
kundi gina try naman
ang iban nga kaayuhan
kag naga paka tutum
kay gahambal sila
graduate nako da
matuod man kung kis'a
kay biskan ako
amo man ko na sa mga bata
ilintuon gid
makatilaw lang sang ginadumilian
sang mga ginikanan
pero sa subong
ga edad nako 24
daw natamad na ko mag lapas
sang house rules
daw may ara na ko
responsibilidad sa kaugalingon ko
wala nko gasabay
sa mga bata, kag mga ka edad ko
nga bag'o pa lang ka tinunto
subong nakita ko na
matuod ayhan
nga blessing in disguise lang ni tanan
ang mga katuntuhan nga gina obra
sang mga kabataan? ? ?
ayhan
ikaw na husga
basta para sa akon blessing in disguise gid!

Sonnet V: Nothing But No

Nothing but "No," and "Aye," and "Aye," and "No"?
How falls it out so strangely you reply?
I tell ye, Fair, I'll not be answer'd so,
With this affirming "No," denying "Aye."
I say, "I love," you slightly answer "Aye";
I say, "You love," you pule me out a "No";
I say, "I die," you echo me an "Aye";
"Save me," I cry, you sigh me out a "No";
Must woe and I have nought but "No" and "Aye"?
No I am I, if I no more can have;
Answer no more, with silence make reply,
And let me take myself what I do crave.
Let "No" and "Aye" with I and you be so;
Then answer "No," and "Aye," and "Aye" and "No."

The Elphin Nourrice

I heard a cow low, a bonnie cow low,
An' a cow low down in yon glen;
Lang, lang will my young son greet,
Or his mither bid him come ben.

I heard a cow low, a bonnie cow low,
An' a cow low down in yon fauld;
Lang, lang will my young son greet,
Or is mither take him frae cauld.

Waken, Queen of Elfan,
An hear your Nourrice moan.
O moan ye for your meat,
Or moan ye for your fee,
Or moan ye for the ither bounties
That ladies are wont to gie?

I moan na for my meat,
Nor yet for my fee,
But I mourn for Christened land--
It's there I fain would be.

O nurse my bairn, Nourice, she says,
Till he stan' at your knee,
An' ye's win hame to Christen land,
Whar fain it's ye wad be.

O keep my bairn, Nourice,
Till he gang by the hauld,
An' ye's win hame to your young son,
Ye left in four nights auld.

A Song From "The Player Queen"

MY mother dandled me and sang,
"How young it is, how young!'
And made a golden cradle
That on a willow swung.
"He went away,' my mother sang,
"When I was brought to bed,'
And all the while her needle pulled
The gold and silver thread.
She pulled the thread and bit the thread
And made a golden gown,
And wept because she had dreamt that I
Was born to wear a crown.
"When she was got,' my mother sang,
I heard a sea-mew cry,
And saw a flake of the yellow foam
That dropped upon my thigh."
How therefore could she help but braid
The gold into my hair,
And dream that I should carry
The golden top of care?

Sir Patrick Spence

The king sits in Dumferling toune,
Drinking the blude-reid wine:
"O whar will I get guid sailor,
To sail this schip of mine?"

Up and spak an eldern knicht,
Sat at the kings richt kne:
"Sir Patrick Spence is the best sailor
That sails upon the se."

The king has written a braid letter,
And signd it wi his hand,
And sent it to Sir Patrick Spence,
Was walking on the sand.

The first line that Sir Patrick red,
A loud lauch lauched he;
The next line that Sir Patrick red,
The teir blinded his ee.

"O wha is this has don this deid,
This ill deid don to me,
To send me out this time o' the yeir,
To sail upon the se!

"Mak hast, mak haste, my mirry men all,

For I feir a deadlie storme.

"Late late yestreen I saw the new moone,
Wi the auld moone in hir arme,

Hør — nu rasler det derude, gamle Fatter kommer hjem;
„Gud skee Lov, han kom den Gamle! Søen er i Aften slem."
Men, hvor han er bleg og stille, Skyer paa hans Pande staae;
Haaret børster han med Haanden; see, hans Øie ruller vildt;
Undrende hans gamle Qvinde trykker ham i Haanden mildt.
Hende kan han ikke dølge, hvad der driver ham afsted;
„Jeg maa bort! til Dannerhoffet; før faaer jeg ei nogen Fred.
Havfruen igjen jeg hørte, det er nu den tredie Gang;
Og en Prinds skal fødes Danmark, fuld af Snille, fuld af Mod;
Vandrer saa afsted fra Hytten, frygter ikke Storm og Nat;

2
I Røg og Damp staaer Bugt og Sø,
Paa Bølgen glider Havets Mø;
Sin Helt hun seer paa Dækket staae;
Høit om hans Daad vil Harpen slaae:
„Kong Christian stod ved høien Mast
I Røg og Damp.
Hans Værge hamrede saa fast,
At Gothens Hjelm og Hjerne brast;
Da sank hvert fjendtligt Speil og Mast
I Røg og Damp.
Fly, skreg de, fly, hvad flygte kan!
Hvo staaer mod Danmarks Christian,
I Kamp?!"

3
Aarhundreder forsvinde i Tidens dybe Grav.
See, Natten er saa stille, speilklar er Fjord og Hav;
Dampskibet glider hurtigt, langs Samsøes grønne Kyst,
Maskineriet larmer, forresten Alt er tyst.
De Passagerer sove paa Dækket Natten væk,
Enhver har godt indsvøbt sig i Kappe og i Sæk;

No More Chain Gang

He was black and handsome
And mighty mighty brave
Comin from the backwoods
The grandson of a slave
He was caught for something
They knew hed never done
And he was diggin ditches
Out in the burnin sun
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
No more, no more, no more
Man he was a giant
And iron he could bend
And he swore hed fight them
Down to the bitter end
Though he was no talker
His burnin eyes would say
You may keep on tryin
Cant hold me no way
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
No more, no more, no more
And one night he lay in waiting
Hit the guard and took the key
And before the others caught him
He jumped out and he was free
He jumped out and he was free
He made for the swamp lands
It seemed a hopeless duel
They had dogs and shotguns
And they were mighty cruel
But they couldnt find him
He was too smart and strong
Hiding in the daytime
Wandering all night long
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
Working on the chain gang-no more
