Darkness Dream

i dreamed...
i was lost in the night,
making my way through the trees.
small branches lashed against my face,
i could feel stone beneath my feet.
and somewhere near, but far, the sound of water.

wrapped in the stillness of night,
that has its own sounds,
its own smells.
haunted by something i couldnt define,
almost the feeling of being stalked.

i finally made my way to a moonlit clearing.
a flock of small birds rose in front of me.
in the field were children,
different colors, different languages,
all different ages...
children, playing together.

i looked closer...
and noticed their eyes...
something wrong, something odd.
a steel hard voice spoke in my ear...
'these children have never seen daylight,
and never will...'

i awakened with a start.
one word on my lips...

Children Shadows

Into the wind children voices echo’s
From near and far
Laughter of joy
Having fun in a large meadow
Linking to a empty space
The first rising of the moonlit

Night
The images of children within
The moonlit night
Vision of children playing
Around the old, old oak

Tree..
In the first rising of the moonlit
Night,
Vision of children playing within
The realms of shadows run.
In and out of the moonlit night
The children softly, softly fades
Into the night..

Beside You

*** take your children down to the water wash their heads and sing .. holy holy
Last night I dreamed you were standing there, strong and tall beside me.
All my life ... behind me.
You gently took me by my hand and led me to where I couldnt see,but where Ive always been ... an island.
In my dreams Ive been an island ...
Where Im all alone, and Ive built these walls stone by stone.
I want to leave but I dont know where to go.
Ive tried the best I can, but its hard to be a man and feel the way you feel.
Im different on the inside. Ive tried to give to you what you need to get you through.
Ill always be ... beside you.
The day you were born I held you ... small and helpless crying, your life and mine entwining.
As I looked into your eyes I saw myself in an overview, reaching out to you from this island in the sea.
I dont want to be an island.
Ive tried the best I can, but its hard to be a man and feel the way you feel.
Im different on the inside.
Ive tried to give to you what you need to get you through.
Ill always be ... beside you.

Hard Night For Sarah

Its been a hard night for Sarah
The divorce went through today
Ten years out the window
She's been faithful all the way
She's feeling really bitter
She's feeling lost and small
She wonders where it all went wrong
Its been a hard night for Sarah
She's taken quite a fall
Well he was all she ever hoped for
And she gave him all she had
Never gave a cause to worry
Never hurt her or made her sad
And no one thought to tell her
They all figured that she knew
Just another harmless fling
A phase all men go through
Its been a hard night for Sarah
She's going to have to see it through
Gonna have to see it through
The sun is slowly rising
On another brand new day
The children will be waking soon
And shell send them on their way
Its been a hard night for Sarah
Its been a hard night for Sarah
Its been a hard night for Sarah
But today is another day
Today is another day

It Is Wonderful That There Are So Many Small Children In Israel

IT IS WONDERFUL THAT THERE ARE SO MANY SMALL CHILDREN IN ISRAEL

It is wonderful that there are so many small children in Israel
I see them everywhere and am happy when I see them.
Do they make up or compensate in some way for the million and one half Jewish children murdered a generation or two ago?
Nothing makes up for even one life lost
That we know.

But still seeing these children one invariably thinks of those other Jewish children-
I don't understand it at all-

It is wonderful that there are so many small children in Israel
Children are a great blessing and the hope of their parents and grandparents lives-

God Bless and protect these children
And let them never know the hatred the suffering the cruelty
Children no less innocent than them knew
A generation or two ago.

My God

If I should find myself in blackest night,
And fear is stabbin' me all over,
A tiny prayer cracks the dark with light,
And I here sounds behind my wall.
Inside, a still small voice, it calls and calls.
Then like a thunder bolt it falls and falls:
My God!
When life becomes more real than children's games,
Or we've become too old to play them,
We'll grow old gracefully,
We'll hide our shame. but there's that voice behind the wall.
And like my conscience, it is still and small.
Each word is mercy, protects us all:
My God!
"Et in lux perpetuo"
"Deu domine"
"Et in pax aeternus"
"Deu domine"
I was a boy, when tempted, fell sometimes,
And fell so low, no one could see me,
Save for the eyes of Him that sees my crime.
When sheep, like me, have drifted lost,
All frightened children who are tempest tossed,
Down flies His wrath like an albatross:
My God

And Then

Outside I hear the sounds of children,
the sounds do not get louder or softer,

just a small stone in the hand of a morning,
legs splayed and weak obscurely in cotton,

falling asleep again I scramble up a nightslope,
dirt and gravel shoot from underneath my bare feet

and then

I dream of my first day at school, the smell of
stale milk and wet raincoats, the crying of lost children.

This is an unexpected return, as if I will never wake again
to the sound of the paperboy opening the creaky gate.

Lucille

In a bar in toledo across from the depot
On a barstool she took off her ring
I thought Id get closer
So I walked on over
I sat down and asked her name
When the drink finally hit her
She said Im no quitter
But I finally quit living on dreams
Im hungry for laughter
And here ever after
Im after whatever the other life brings
In the mirror I saw him
I closely watch him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman
Who sat their beside me
He had a strange look on his face
The big hands are callous
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
Ive had some bad time
Live thru some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldnt heal
After he left us, I ordered more whiskey
I thought how he made him look small
From lights of the bar room to a rented hotel room
We walked without talking at all
She was a beauty, but when she came to me
She must have thought I lost my mind
I couldnt hold her, the words that he told her
Kept coming back time after time.
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
Ive had some bad time
Live thru some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldnt heal
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
Ive had some bad time
Live thru some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldnt heal

The Kids

Theyre taking her children away
Because they said she was not a good mother
Theyre taking her children away
Because she was making it with sisters and brothers
And everyone else, all of the others
Like cheap officers who would
Stand there and flirt in front of me
Theyre taking her children away
Because they said she was not a good mother
Theyre taking her children away
Because of the things that they heard she had done
The black air force sergeant was not the first one
And all of the drugs she took, every one, every one
And I am the water boy, the real games not over here
But my heart is overflowin anyway
Im just a tired man, no words to say
But since she lost her daughter
Its her eyes that fill with water
And I am much happier this way
Theyre taking her children away
Because they said she was not a good mother
Theyre taking her children away
Because number one was the girl friend from paris
The things that they did, ah, they didnt have to ask us
And then the welshman from india, who came here to stay
Theyre taking her children away
Because they said she was not a good mother
Theyre taking her children away
Because of the things she did in the streets
In the alleys and bars, no she couldnt be beat
That miserable rotten slut couldnt turn, anyone away
I am the water boy, the real games not over here
But my heart is overflowin anyway
Im just a tired man, no words to say
But since she lost her daughter
Its her eyes that fill with water
And I am much happier this way

On The Trail Of Pessoa

i've walked this road for so long,
that i know what silence tastes like.
i hear only the simple sounds,
or the simplicity of sound...
i no longer confuse shadows,
and i sleep with dogs.

owning nothing,
there's nothing i would kill
to purchase!
there are no footprints
in front of me,
i follow no one.

intimate encounters with strangers,
for we are all strangers,
even to ourselves.
perhaps a word or two,
or not...
we share the cup, and the fire.

i have long conversations with trees,
read intimate stories
written in branches and leaves...
sing lovesongs to small pools of water,
pick up the broken shell of the hatchling
with awe....

my eyes bow in reverence
in the presence of women...
small children come to me,
tell me stories about dreams.
we build kingdoms of sticks,
discarded by birds....

stray cats sit on my lap,
i learn the language of paw.
i listen to the wind
humming in the spider's web.
and dead things rest
by the side of my chair...
waiting for dawn, just waiting!

Sonnet # 337

Each morning bright I children see delight.
Each morning dark I children see sad crying.
The mornings bright`ve milk, bread for appetitte.
The mornings dark not e`en water for drinking.
Each night, lo, bright I happy children see.
Each night yes dark I children see so sobbing.
The nights bright`ve beds for when they`re asleep sleep.
The nights are dark not e`en a floor for resting.
So I as if I`d plenty of everything,
A palace my small room, my clothes all gold
Do come to feel I have too much of spring
When there`re children to misery they`re sold.
And then I litte eat, think have a feast
And look at children who their food has ceased.

Discontent

Late at night
our trains pass through broad meadows.

We grip controls, heavy, uncertain, anxious
about schedules,
about stalled cars on tracks,
about small children darting through the night,
small children who dare steel wheels and blinding lights
who dare death at our trembling hands;

we guide our trains
probing the night
along the measured way,

discontent,

without incident.

Children Of The Night

All that I know in my life,
I have learned on the street
No magic carpet, no genie, no shoes on my feet
Will I wake up from this nightmare?
A fear that chills me to the bone
Though I may be one of many
I feel so all alone
We are the children of the night
We wont go down without a fight
Our voice is strong, our futures bright
And thanks to what we learned from you
Weve grown into the children of the night
Left by my father with only this scar on my face
Told by my mother that,
no, you were just a mistake
I have tasted my own hunger
Sold my body to survive
Some have paid to scratch the surface
But they cant touch whats inside
We are the children of the night
We wont go down without a fight
Our voice is strong, our futures bright
And thanks to what we learned from you
Weve grown into the children of the night
How I long for something better
Than this life I know too well
Lord, I know Im bound for heaven
Cause Ive done my time in hell
We are the children of the night
We wont go down without a fight
Our voice is strong, our futures bright
And thanks to what we learned from you
Weve grown into the children of the night

See The Children

(la la la la la la la...)
I stopped the car
The other day
I had to ask a little
Girl the way
I thought she'd show me
Better if she got inside
And once inside
I thought i'd taker her
For a little ride...
So i see the children
Feel the children
See the children
Feel the children
All the time...
See the children
Feel the children
See the children
Feel the children
All the time...
I'm a supermarket santa
Underneath the christmas tree
The little one all like to
Come and sit upon my knee
I have to hold them tightly
'cause they fall to the floor
A little concern ain't
Against the law...
So i see the children
Feel the children
See the children
Feel the children
All the time
See the children
(something something something??) all the time
I pass by the infant school
Every single day
I push sweeties through the fence
But the kids just run way
I only want to talk with them
And join in their fun
But all the little children do
Is run run run run run run run run...
(la la la la la la, la la la la la la..etc..)
See the children
Feel the children all the time..
See the children
Feel the children
See the children
Feel the children
All the time........

Identity

the only identity i have
that will remain...
is in the eyes... of small
children, hungry and orphaned,
their families lost
to wars, earthquakes, floods,
disease, poverty...
children of different colors,
nationalities, faiths...
children without names.

i am their father, their mother,
their sister, their brother...
i am the answer to their hunger,
i am its cause.
i am their hunger!
i have no name.

A Voice On The Wind

I

She walks with the wind on the windy height
When the rocks are loud and the waves are white,
And all night long she calls through the night,
'O my children, come home!'
Her bleak gown, torn as a tattered cloud,
Tosses around her like a shroud,
While over the deep her voice rings loud,-
'O my children, come home, come home!
O my children, come home!'

II

Who is she who wanders alone,
When the wind drives sheer and the rain is blown?
Who walks all night and makes her moan,
'O my children, come home!'
Whose face is raised to the blinding gale;
Whose hair blows black and whose eyes are pale,
While over the world goes by her wail,-
'O my children, come home, come home!
O my children, come home!'

III

She walks with the wind in the windy wood;
The dark rain drips from her hair and hood,
And her cry sobs by, like a ghost pursued,
'O my children, come home!'
Where the trees loom gaunt and the rocks stretch drear,
The owl and the fox crouch back with fear,
As wild through the wood her voice they hear,-
'O my children, come home, come home!
O my children, come home!'

IV

Who is she who shudders by
When the boughs blow bare and the dead leaves fly?
Who walks all night with her wailing cry,
'O my children, come home!'
Who, strange of look, and wild of tongue,
With wan feet wounded and hands wild-wrung,
Sweeps on and on with her cry, far-flung,-
'O my children, come home, come home!
O my children, come home!'

V

'Tis the Spirit of Autumn, no man sees,
The mother of Death and of Mysteries,
Who cries on the wind all night to these,
'O my children, come home!'
The Spirit of Autumn, pierced with pain,
Calling her children home again,
Death and Dreams, through ruin and rain,-
'O my children, come home, come home!
O my children, come home!'

Katherine Mansfield

Evening Song of the Thoughtful Child

Shadow children, thin and small,
Now the day is left behind,
You are dancing on the wall,
On the curtains, on the blind.

On the ceiling, children, too,
Peeping round the nursery door,
Let me come and play with you,
As we always played before.

Let's pretend that we have wings
And can really truly fly
Over every sort of things
Up and up into the sky.

Where the sweet star children play--
It does seem a dreadful rule,
They must stay inside all day.
I suppose they go to school.

And to-night, dears, do you see,
They are having such a race
With their father moon--the tree
Almost hides his funny face.

Shadow children, once at night,
I was all tucked up in bed,
Father moon came--such a fright--
Through the window poked his head;

I could see his staring eyes,
O, my dears, I was afraid,
That was not a nice surprise,
And the dreadful noise I made!

Let us make a fairy ring,
Shadow children, hand in hand,
And our songs quite softly sing
That we learned in fairyland.

Shadow children, hin and small,
See, the day is far behind;
And I kiss you--on the wall--
On the curtains--on the blind.

That Feel Nothing

how many small children,
in this country and abroad,
will go to bed hungry tonite?

how many eyes
staring in the darkness...
never making a sound?

how much money wasted
on extravagance and greed...
how much more importance

placed on oil than food?
how many bombs dropped?
how many shares traded?

how many children
that no one sees?
and how many hearts

that feel nothing?

The Poet Endureth!

i stare at my face in the mirror,
and count with the heavy rhythm
of the clock... moment by moment...
every feeling, born and unborn,
every taste, intoxicating, burning the lips...
every smell, faint and overpowering...
every touch... real and imagined...
and who am i? and what have i to give?
i am the sound that you cant define,
cant put to words, cant control.
i am the fire that warms you, and destroys you...
the water you drink that drowns you;
the wind at your back, the infidel wind
that whispers to you in the middle of the night.
i am the small child, lost and crying,
i am the murderer, still someone's son.
i am the woman you'd die for,
that leaves you broken and bleeding.
i am the priest, the prophet, the thief,
the addict, the whore...
i am everything you believe in,
everything you're scared to admit you feel.
i am the tear no one sees you cry,
i am the fear you keep hidden.
i am the hungry man standing in line,
whose family is long gone.
i am the casket they buried your mother in...
i am the words written in stone,
that no one ever reads.
i am the stranger who steps in front of the car,
pushes you away, and is killed.
i am the path grown over,
... that you'd forgotten!
i am the kiss, the touch of flesh,
the cry of passion in the night.
i am the soul damned to hell,
burned at the stake by the righteous!
i am the hand that touches forbidden places,
that holds yours when you're alone.
i am every mistake you've ever made,
and some you want to make!
i am a lost soul with a glimpse of eternity,
nothing more, nothing less...
i am the poet endureth! i am nothing
but the dust beneath your feet...
i am merely the echo of what makes you human,
i have no name... i am everybody!

Children of Lost God

Extended palms, seeking alms
sunken eyes, skeltoned arms
jaundiced skin, frail frames
children of lost God.

Ragged and shabby, looking ravenous
searching morsels of food, trembling and nervous
fighting the odds, weak but courageous
children of lost God.

Here, there and everywhere
at crossroads and traffic signals
selling wares of rich and famous
or washing utencils, running errands
at the stalls, dabhas, small eateries
under the hot sun or the sand
picture this, view not so grand
children of lost God.

Urchins of all ages initiated
into the crimes of different hue
slowly but surely they age to their prime
getting black listed under who is who
death stalks them every now and then
making them prey on a sly
yet they survive
forcing death to give them a bye
children of lost God.

Sodomised, molested or getting raped
gender distinction is never made
the claws of mafia so strong
have no choice but to go along
children of lost God.

Aquiring all vices
no saviour in sight
in time of crisis
abused and used
have no emotions of their own
ocean of tears not to be shown
children of lost God.

Their images haunt
future in them taunt
aware yet unawares
concern for them seldom we flaunt
children of lost God.

Oh God Almighty
help them find the lost God
free them from this bondage
now act and spare the rod
let them recover
lost childhood, innocence
and battered image
children of lost God
children of lost God.

Train Song

I try to recall what it was you said to me just then
But this train keeps on rocking me back to sleep
And i fear come tomorrow i won't even remember your name
I'd make myself remember
Make myself recall
But these promises and these vows i made you now
Seem to have no voice at all
The color of the canyons
When first it was said i love you
But these colors and these canyons
Now all seem silly and small
I don't understand at all
How these colors in my memory just fade
Into such a pale shade of grey
And cold rails remind me of your cold feet
And my eyes expect to see you behind every door
But when i shut my eyes
I can't even recall what it is that you wore
My god was that only yesterday
I can't even remember your face
I feel so far away
I make myself remember
Make myself recall
But these promises and these vows i made you now
Seem to have no voice at all
The color of the canyons
When first it was said i love you
But these colors and these canyons
Now all seem silly and small
I don't understand at all
How these colors in my memory just fade away
Into such a pale shade of grey
*i say to myself my god i used to love him
I wanted to share with him my womb and my world
But now i stare at him as though through a glass wall
I say i used to love him but now i feel nothing for him at all
My god how could this be
Won't you please explain this to me
Now sleep sings to me in a sweet and urgent voice
And i fear that i have no choice but to forget these flowers
These daisies you gave me, the offerings you made me
The vows that we swore by, swearing we'd be together
Always and forever, the children we named and now we'll never have
And i know i'm supposed to meet you
I don't even think i'll remember your name tomorrow
I make myself remember
Make myself recall
But these promises and these vows i made you now
Seem to have no voice at all
The color of the canyons
When first it was said i love you
But these colors and these canyons
Now all seem silly and small
I don't understand at all
How these colors in my memory just fade away
Into such a pale shade of grey
