Edward Lear

There was a Young Lady of Tyre,
Who swept the loud chords of a lyre;
At the sound of each sweep
She enraptured the deep,
And enchanted the city of Tyre.

An Old Tyre (Fun Poem 79)

Someone had discarded an old tyre.
It was all battered and worn.
As I stared at it, I wondered
of what journeys it had been on.
How far had it gone,
and if it had seen
some interesting places on its travels around?
That old tyre discarded on the ground.
When I think of the travels
we make in our car each day,
I bet that old tyre would have a lot to say.
However, it is abandoned,
no use to anyone.
When I looked the next day and the tyre was gone.
Overnight it must have stood up
and rolled along on more travels I presume.
Therefore, this ends the tale of an old tyre,
which was discarded on the ground.

Psalm 87

The church the birth-place of the saints.

God in his earthly temple lays
Foundations for his heav'nly praise:
He likes the tents of Jacob well,
But still in Zion loves to dwell.

His mercy visits every house
That pay their night and morning vows;
But makes a more delightful stay
Where churches meet to praise and pray.

What glories were described of old!
What wonders are of Zion told!
Thou city of our God below,
Thy fame shall Tyre and Egypt know.

Egypt and Tyre, and Greek and Jew,
Shall there begin their lives anew;
Angels and men shall join to sing
The hill where living waters spring.

When God makes up his last account
Of natives in his holy mount,
'Twill be an honor to appear
As one new-born or nourished there!

A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste

If you listen, to the night
You can hear the darkness call
I can barely stand to wait
I can barely stand at all
Cmon closer to me now
Its like were sharing the same skin
We gotta get out of this jail
We gotta let the future in
So many things in your life
That your bound to regret
Why didnt I do that?
Why didnt I do this?
So many chances you lost
That youll never forget
Why didnt I make it?
Why didnt I take it right there?
The loneliest words youll ever know
If only-if only it was so
The emptiest words that therell ever be:
It could have been me. it could have been me
The loneliest words youll ever know
If only-if only it was so
The emptiest words that therell ever be:
It could have been me. it could have been me
Youll have to pay for it later
If you dont get it when its going for free
Believe me -! believe me -!
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Its something thats always been so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights
Youre gonna show me that you already know
Theres a feast waiting for you
And youve never even gotten a taste
Its later than you think and
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste!
You shouldnt tremble when we touch
Theres no reason for these fears
Its a promise that was made
Weve been promised this for years
I wanna show you it all
What to do and where and how!
Cause well never be as young as we are right now
Well never be as young as we are right now!
So many cries in the night
That you try to ignore
Why didnt I do this?
Why didnt I do that?
So many unanswered prayers
So many unopened doors
Why didnt I take it?
Why didnt I make it come true?
The loneliest words youll ever know:
If only - if only it was so
The emptiest words that therell ever be:
It could have been me
It could have been me
The loneliest words youll ever- know:
If only - if only it was so
The emptiest words that therell ever be:
It could have been me
It could have been me
Youll have to pay for it later:
If you dont get it when its going for free!
Believe me! believe me, believe me!

A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Its something that has always been so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights
Im gonna show you that you already know...
Theres a feast waiting for you
And youve never even gotten a taste
Its later than, you think and
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste!
Theres a feast waiting for you
And youve never even gotten a taste
Its later than you think and
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste!
Tyre tracks and broken hearts
Thats all were leaving behind!
It doesnt matter what were losing
It only matters what were going to find!
Tyre tracks and broken hearts
Thats all were leaving behind!
It doesnt matter what were losing
It only matters what were going to find!
Tyre tracks and broken hearts
Thats all were leaving behind!
It doesnt matter what were losing
It only matters what were going to find!

Put Another Log on the Fire

Put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
And go out to the car and change the tyre.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe,
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire, babe,
And come and tell me why you're leaving me.

Now don't I let you wash the car on Sunday?
Don't I warn you when you're gettin fat?
Ain't I a-gonna take you fishin' with me someday?
Well, a man can't love a woman more than that.
Ain't I always nice to your kid sister?
Don't I take her driving every night?
So, sit here at my feet 'cos I like you when you're sweet,
And you know it ain't feminine to fight.

So, put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
Go out to the car and lift it up and change the tyre.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe,
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire, babe,
And come and tell me why you're leaving me.

How a Heartless Machine Can Feel?

No culture,
No compassion,
No one is with me when I fight for hunger,
No to understand and love,
When we are machines,
Simply machines,
Toys and puppets,
Playing with fate and destiny,
Heartless tiny creatures,
Thinking we are Lord of our own,
Where are my father and mother,
Where are my brothers,
Where are my sisters,
For this money printing machine,
Teller machine to wife and children,
Cook or servant to husband and kids,
Robot for my boss
where is my heart to feel,
When mind thinks of only deals,

Where is that
softness left?
When tyre has to roll on rough terrain,
Any time tyre may puncture or tube may rupture,
What machine can feel,
What heartless machine can feel?

How a machine produced,
In same factory, with different size and purpose,
Different shape and size,
Different manufacture date,
Machines without heart,
If heart is confined to only pump blood,
Know not,
father and mother,
How can call one another,
'Brothers and
sisters? '

When I First Kissed You

New york city can be so pretty
]from a birds eye view
Because up there
Yeah, thats where I first kissed you
A modern day romance
A perfect performance
Acting like two fools
Saying silly things
Whisper sweet nothings
Live young lovers only do
I was shaking
You were breathtaking
Like the empire state
My voice was so far
Not quite sinatra
Singing songs so great
The clock struck one
The night still very young
In the city that never sleeps
Then a whirlwind blew
When I first kissed you
Nearly swept me
Swept me off my feet
When I first kissed you
Thats when I knew
I was in love
Because up there
Yeah, thats where
I first kissed you

A Story In Everything

As writers we should see
a story in everything,
whether it be a dying twig,
or the birdies singing,
the bit of paper
carried along by the wind
or and old tyre discarded.
Everything has a story
of why, when and where,
and through our imaginations
we should recognise it there.

To Antiochos Epiphanis

The young Antiochian said to the king:
'My heart pulses with a precious hope.
The Macedonians, Antiochos Epiphanis,
the Macedonians are back in the great fight.
Let them only win, and I'll give anyone who wants them
the lion and the horses, the coral Pan,
the elegant palace, the gardens of Tyre,
and everything else you've given me, Antiochos Epiphanis.'
The king may have been moved a little,
but then he remembered his father, his brother,
and said nothing: an eavesdropper
might repeat something they'd said.
In any case, as was to be expected,
the terrible defeat came swiftly, at Pydna.

Lady-oh

Words and music by neil diamond
Lady-oh, lady-oh, I walked the streets again last night.
I saw you in the city light like a vision, lady-oh.
Lady i, lady i, Ive been waitin around such a long long time
Believin I could make you mine, just wanting you lady-oh.
But here I am and there you are, much too far to even hear me.
Hurts a lot, you know it does, it hurts a lot.
Oh, lady-oh, am I gonna ever learn what I never learned before?
City lights, city lights burn so warm and they burn so bright,
But me, I walk the city night to forget you, lady-oh.
But here I am and there you are, much too far to even hear me.
Hurts a lot, you know it does, it hurts a lot.
Oh, lady-oh, am I gonna ever learn what I never learned before?

Body And Soul

Through the Museum
I stroll, and see
Goblets fashioned in Arcady,
Spears from the Islands, and robes from Tyre—
Gew-gaws of pomp and of old desire.
On one of the walls
A looking glass
Catches my image as I pass.
Austerely from mirrored eyes, I see
The soul of the past look out at me.

Byron

The harp the Monarch Minstrel swept

I
The harp the Monarch Minstrel swept,
The King of men, the lov'd of Heav'n,
Which Music hallowed while she wept
O'er tones her heart of hearts had giv'n,
Redoubled be her tears, its chords are riv'n!
It soften'd men of iron mould,
It gave them virtues not their own;
No ear so dull, no soul so cold,
That felt not—fired not to the tone,
Till David's lyre grew mightier than his throne!

II
It told the triumphs of our King—
It wafted glory to our God—
It made our gladdened vallies ring—
The cedars bow—the mountains nod—
Its sound aspired to Heaven and there abode!
Since then—though heard on earth no more—
Devotion and her daughter Love
Still bid the bursting spirit soar
To sounds that seem as from above
In dreams that day's broad light can not remove.

The Trumpet Call

Trumpeter, sound for the last Crusade!
Sound for the fire of the red-cross kings,
Sound for the passion, the splendour, the pity
That swept the world for a dead Man's sake,
Sound, till the answering trumpet rings
Clear from the heights of the holy City,
Sound till the lions of England awake,
Sound for the tomb that our lives have betrayed;
O'er broken shrine and abandoned wall,
Trumpeter, sound the great recall,
Trumpeter, rally us, rally us, rally us;
Sound for the last Crusade!

Trumpeter, sound for the splendour of God!
Sound the music whose name is law,
Whose service is perfect freedom still,
The order august that rules the stars.
Bid the anarchs of night withdraw,
Too long the destroyers have worked their will,
Sound for the last, the last of the wars.
Sound for the heights that our fathers trod,
When truth was truth and love was love,
With a hell beneath, but a heaven above,
Trumpeter, rally us, up to the heights of it!
Sound for the City of God.

Just a load of silly limericks about people I know

I know young lady called Dee
Who lived in a bubblegum tree
She savoured the view
Whilst big bubbles she blew
And she only came down for her tea.

I know I young lady called Carolyn
Who said she was gonna go travelling
She afforded the lot
By a pay out she got
When her ex got impaled by a javelin.

There once was a poet called Ben
Who couldn't let go of his pen
He had a 'to do'
With some strong super glue
And it's been stuck there ever since then.

There once was a young Mr bright
Who wanted his farts to ignite
When he lighted the match
His fart just wouldn't catch
Coz the pants he had on were too tight!

I know a young lady called Laurie
Who burped after eating a curry
By god it was loud
And for this she was proud
Then she giggled and said she was sorry!

There once was a young man called Will
Who found it quite hard to sit still
He did not sit down once
No not even for lunch
It eventually made him quite ill

I know a lady called Karen
Who hired a group of hit men
She payed a few bob
For this one special job
And her ex was not spotted again

I know a girl called Nicola
Who craved for a day at a spar
She wanted shellac
And a rub of her back
But thought waxing was going too far

Picture Of A Little Boy

I have a lovely picture
Set in a golden frame;
A picture of a little boy,
I do not know his name.

He's sitting by a waggon,
Upon an old car-tyre;
To know just what he's thinking
Would be my heart's desire.

He seems so small and helpless,
And troubled in his mind;
But one, more cute than he,
I doubt that you could ever find.

His hair is blonde and beautiful,
His eyes the deepest blue;
He sits there like 'The thinker'
Debating what to do.

I love this little picture
That's hanging on my wall;
This picture of a little boy
So young and very small;

He looks a perfect mixture
Of two boys that I once knew;
Just sitting in time's window,
And I am looking through.

Kelpie

There was a warm wind with the high tide
On the south of the hill.
When a young girl went a-walking
And I followed with a will.
''good day to you, my fine young lady
With your lips so sweetly full.
May I help you comb your long hair ---
Sweep it from that brow so cool?
Up, ride with the kelpie.
Ill steal your soul to the deep.
If you dont ride with me while the devils free
Ill ride with somebody else.
Well Im a man when Im feeling
The urge to step ashore.
So I may charm you --- not alarm you.
Tell you all fine things, and more.
Up, ride with the kelpie.
Ill steal your soul to the deep.
If you dont ride with me while the devils free
Ill ride with somebody else.
Say goodbye to all your dear kin ---
For they hate to see you go
In your young prime, to this place of mine
In the still loch far below.
Up, ride with the kelpie.
Ill steal your soul to the deep.
If you dont ride with me while the devils free
Ill ride with somebody else.
