The Trove at Bioda Mor

The last I saw of Sebastian Fudge
He was dancing the hempen jig,
To pay for the years of pirating
At the side of Captain Kidd.
While Kidd was swung at Tilbury,
Was dipped in a coat of tar,
Then hung in chains by the River Thames
As a sign to the faint of heart!

I'd sailed with Fudge on the Emerald,
In the days when men were bold,
And there wasn't a Frenchman privateer
That we couldn't divest of gold,
I thought of the Spanish throats we'd cut
And the nights of rum and hock,
As Fudge went tripping his final jig
At Execution Dock.

That left just me and Jackie Straw,
Midshipman Bowes, and Penn,
The last of the Jolly Roger crew
Of the ships we'd sailed back then,
So we met at the back of Polly's place,
The One-Eyed Tar that night,
And drank to the soul of Fudge, and drank!
We drank to the broad daylight!

And Polly had joined us there at dawn
The tears still on her face,
She'd been with Fudge, his faithful Moll,
As he swung with little grace:
'He scribbled a map for me, ' she said,
'I've kept it safely hid,
We could have collected the treasure trove
If he hadn't sailed with Kidd! '

'Belay that, let us see the map! '
Said Straw, his eyes ablaze,
And I caught a glimpse of his cutlass raised
In the raiding party days,
But 'Aye', said Penn, 'there's gold enough
And a chest of jewels each,
If we follow the trail of the castaways,
And the gold of Captain Teach! '

'You and your Caribbean gold,
I have no mind for that,
Rather a treasure close at hand,
It's marked on Fudge's map! '
Polly drew out a parchment then
A map of Scotland's shore,
The wreck of the Magdalena marked
By the cliffs at Bioda Mor.

'It's there, in the Outer Hebrides,
An Island known as Dun,
The Galleon sailed beneath an arch,
An arch of solid stone!
The masts then brought it crashing down
It crippled the Magdalena,
They drifted on to Bioda Mor
With no-one there to save her! '

We set our sails for the Hebrides
In a sloop, Jack Straw and Bowes,
And Polly, lodged in the cabin below
With a pile of women's clothes,
While Penn was up in the Crows Nest,
Skin tight with a quart of rum,
To keep the cold from his aging bones
On watch for the Isle of Dun.

The morning saw the cliffs rear up
And scrape the greying sky,
I'd never seen cliffs as high as this,
'And nor, ' said Straw, 'have I! '
The waves swept in to a pebbled beach
From a swell of twenty feet,
'We'll never land in a longboat there,
That landing's out of reach! '

Polly attached herself to Bowes
While Straw looked on in hate,
He's fancied his chance with Fudge's Moll
But she'd gone with Fudge's mate,
She told me once in a whisper there
That she didn't trust Jack Straw,
And Penn was a little too close to him,
She kept a gun in her drawer.

I watched them all, I knew too well
What greed could do to a crew,
I'd seen with the best of shipboard mates
What a handful of gold could do,
So I kept myself to myself as we
Sailed round to the other shore,
And landed there on the leeward side,
Across from Bioda Mor.

We trudged around by the coast, the cliffs
Were far too high to scale,
It took us the rest of the day, I saw
That Polly was looking pale,
She wanted to quit, and rest awhile,
But Straw kept pushing along,
And Bowes brought up in the rear, I knew
He was carrying Polly's gun!

The wind came up, the breakers crashed,
We kept close by the cliff,
The beach was a solid shingle there
With piles of kelp, and drift,
We came to the mouth of a hidden cave
And sought the quiet depths,
The sea swept in as the tide had turned
And it made us catch our breath.

Inside the cave was a pile of gold
That covered the rocky floor,
And everywhere was the glint of gems,
Of diamonds, rubies, more...
I saw the glittering eyes of Straw
As he scooped the gold moidores,
'There's gold enough for everyone! '
'Not so! ' said Mr. Bowes.

He'd pulled the gun, and covered us
As I knew he would, I guess,
And Polly stooped as she gathered up
The coins in her flowing dress,
'There's only two will be leaving here
Alive, ' she said, 'and free! '
'Who'll be the first to die, ' she said,
And Bowes had looked at me!

I took the cup and I threw the dice,
They fell to a handy deuce,
'That puts me behind a rock, and safe, '
I laughed: 'I've cooked your goose! '
Then Sandra's Mum marched in and said:
'Okay, you lot, it's time...'
For she was only eleven then,
And the rest of us were nine!

We groaned, but packed the counters up,
Took one last look at the board,
'I would have snatched the gun, I think, '
Said Bill, who'd played Jack Straw.
'I would have shot you first, ' said Joe,
We shivered there in the cold,
And folded the board, regretfully,
Of the game called 'Spanish Gold! '

I Hate Fudge

I Hate Fudge
by Ted L Glines

Chocolate fudge makes me cringe
with anxiety. Molasses fudge
will half kill me.
I hate fudge.
I have spent most of my life
in a valient fight
to rid the world of evil fudge,
one piece at a time.

In this imperfect world
full of fudge-lovers,
I am the last of
the Anti-Fudge Knights,
struggling against the growing tide
of sweet-tooths on one side
and fudge-makers on the other.
An impossible battle
but someone has got to do it.

Oh Nooooooooooooooooo ...
Wally World is opening a whole display
of fudges from around the globe,
a conspiracy of chocolate and molasses
and walnut pieces.

This looks like a job for Fudge-Killer
(Tah Tahhhhh! ! !) to the RESCUE! ! !

Polly

Chord file
Polly wouldn't listen to her Mama,
Polly wouldn't listen to her Papa.
She tried to make the swinging city scene,
And now there's not a place that Polly hasn't been.
Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home.
Pretty Polly, dressed as jolly as can be,
She's so darling, all the fellas do agree,
And half a million people can't be wrong,
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home.
Polly wrote a letter to her Mama,
Polly made confessions to her Papa.
Mummy's proud 'cause Polly's still in chains
She's happy now her baby's coming home again.
Pretty Polly, she learned that life is just a game,
She is sorry, she just had to break the chains.
And Mama knows, 'cause Mama was the same
Oh, she's happy now her baby's coming home again.
Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter

Polly In A Porny

Haha I kissed Polly goodnight haha as we stood at her front door
Now she's quite a proper lady so I didn't ask for anything more
But haha I was feeling oh so groovie that I went down to the movie
And I sat down and guess just what I saw

I saw Polly in a porny down at the dirty flicks
I saw Polly in a porny I didn't know she knew them tricks
What I seen nearly struck me blind I never knew she was the artically inclined
I saw Polly in a porny with a pony and I've nearly blowed my mind
Was she gallopin' (no no no) oh was she trottin' (no no no)
Oh was she riding across the country with some tall dark handsome person
Oh was she wearin' her cowboy hat haha well not exactly that
But at least I recall she had her spurs on
I love ol' Polly in a porny I keep on going back
Yeah in the very last row I'm singin' low with my coat bouncin' in my lap ooh
I spend each dime I can afford I swear she's gonna win an academy award
I saw Polly in a porny with a pony and the pony seemed a little bored
Ooh oh ride Polly ride slide Polly slide

Pretty Polly

(Traditional:arr K.J.Garside C.Gray)
Polly pretty Polly come go away with me,
Polly pretty Polly come go away with me,
Before we get married some pleasures to see.
She jumped up beside him and away they did go,
She jumped up beside him and away they did go,
Over the mountains and the valleys below.
Billy oh Billy I'm afraid for my life,
Billy oh Billy I'm afraid for my life,
I'm afraid you mean to murder me and leave me behind,
Polly pretty Polly you're guessing about right,
Polly pretty Polly you're guessing about right,
I've been digging your grave for the best part of your,
life.
He stabbed her through the heart and her hot blood did,
flow,
He stabbed her through the heart and her hot blood did,
flow,
And into the grave pretty Polly did go.
He threw a little dirt over her and started for home,
He threw a little dirt over her and started for home,
Leaving nobody there but the wild birds to moan.
A debt to the devil Billy must pay,
A debt to the devil Billy must pay,
For killing pretty Polly and running away.

First Straw

Oh a whole new way of looking at things
The way you react to phone rings
The way it feels when you just let it flow
Sometimes I wonder just how it could be
You take every bit before we see it off the rails
I think that you should know
You never cease to amaze me
You keep me from going crazy
And that's one thing I know for sure
Sometimes I see just how it all will be
Take every bit it's so easy the first straw
And this I know for sure
The first straw
So small it seemed impossible
The next straw
Vanished like shooting stars that fall
The last straw
There's no reason for getting there at all
Yeah
No reason to take it there at all
Yeah
The last straw can land in your mix
Your best day could be apocalypse
Nobody pay attention to the first straw
It seems the last one is all we ever saw
The first straw's a metaphore I pick up myself
It tells me something by showing me something else
I think that you should know
The first straw
So small it seemed impossible
The next straw
Vanished like shooting stars that fall
The last straw
There's no reason for getting there at all
Yeah
No reason to take it there at all
Yeah
Everyone reacts when it gets to the weight of breaking their back
I won't let that be us cause the long side never gave back
Yeah
The first straw
So small it seemed impossible
The next straw
Vanished like shooting stars that fall
The last straw
There's no reason for getting there at all
Yeah
The first straw
So small it seemed impossible
The next straw
Vanished like shooting stars that fall
The last straw
There's no reason for getting there at all
Yeah

The big cat and the fudge

I was walking to school one day
When a huge cat stepped in my way
I offered the large cat some fudge
And asked if it would kindly budge
The cat took the fudge happily
And came along to school with me
Teachers and students watched in awe
As I held the cat by its paw
It went to all lessons with me
To Art and English and PE
But when we both arrived back home
My mother said, “HE HAS TO GO! ”
The cat and I went separate ways
I never saw that cat again
Sometimes I lay fudge on our front step
And as you might or not have guessed,
Every night it vanishes

The Parrot And The Ferrett

Jolly Polly parrot said to the fast, fidgety ferret,
“You want some of my food before I eat all this carrot? ”
Well the fast, fidgety ferret as usual was in a real hurry
And didn’t have time to eat since he only had time to scurry.
So he said, “Thanks, but no thanks. I must be on my way.
It seems like there’s never enough hours for me in a day.”
Then jolly Polly parrot frowned at fidgety and said,
“Unless you change your ways, my friend, you’ll soon be dead.
Fast fidgety ferret, you must eat well to keep your body sound
Or you’re going to get sick and become part of the ground.”
That was indeed a scary thought for fast, fidgety ferret
So he asked jolly Polly for some ideas that might have merit.
“I think that three healthy meals and some regular rest and play”
Said Polly to fidgety, “Now that will give you a better day.”
Fast fidgety thought and then smiled at his friend Polly parrot,
And happily said, “I’ll do it. Now my new name is just Ferret.”

Shortest Straw

Suspicion is your name
Your honesty to blame
Put dignity to shame
Dishonor
Witchhunt, modern day
Determining decay
The blatant disarray
Disfigure
The public eyes' disgrace
Defying common place
Unending paper chase
Unending
Deafening
Painstaking
Reckoning
This vertigo it doth bring
Shortest straw
Challenge liberty
Downed by law
Live in infamy
Rub you raw
Witchhunt riding through
Shortest straw
This shortest straw has been pulled for you
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Shortest straw has been pulled for you
The accusations fly
Discrimination, why?
Your inner self to die
Intruding
Doubt sunk itself in you
It's teeth and talons through
You're living catch-22
Deluding
A mass hysteria
A megalomania
Reveal dementia
Reveal
Secretly
Silently
Certainly
In vertigo you will be
Shortest straw
Challenge liberty
Downed by law
Live in infamy
Rub you raw
Witchhunt riding through
Shortest straw
This shortest straw has been pulled for you
Pulled for you
Shortest straw

Shortest straw has been pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Shortest straw has been pulled for you
Behind you, hands are tied
Your being, ostracized
Your hell is multiplied
Upending
The fallout has begun
Oppressive damage done
Your many turned to none
To nothing
You're reaching your nadir
Your will has disappeared
The lie is crystal clear
Defending
Channels red
One word said
Blacklisted
With vertigo make you dead
Shortest straw
Challenge liberty
Downed by law
Live in infamy
Rub you raw
Witchhunt riding through
Shortest straw
This shortest straw has been pulled for you

I Have A Poll Parrot

I have a Poll parrot,
And Poll is my doll,
And my nurse is Polly,
And my sister Poll.
‘Polly!’ cried Polly,
‘Don't tear Polly, dolly’ -
While soft-hearted Poll
Trembled for the doll.

Will It Get Better?

why do i try to prove myself to you?
everything is never what you want.
what the hell that about!
i don't know why.
but, what do i got to prove to you?
i should be trying to prove to myself,
so why am i paying attention to your comments.
it don't make sense, that i spend most of my time
thinking of them.
it just brings me down.
is that what you want?
it seem to make you happy.
does it matters what the fudge i want! ! ! ! ! !
fudge no, it never did! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
cuz to you I'm always in it for something.
did it ever occur to you i want something more.
fudge no! ! ! ! !
to you that asking on way to much.
what is it going to take?
to have back the life i had.
yet being left in with people who are never happy.
is that so much to ask?
yeah i guess it is.
I'm still stuck in a world that,
messed up and lonely.
will it ever get better.
i have no ideal.

Straw Foot

I guess you didnt hear me
When I told you for the first time
Well dont you worry
It wont be the last
All I need a floorboard
An a wooden shoe
Step aside an let my lady through
Hey foot, straw foot
Low we lay em down
Hey foot, straw foot
Up an back around
See the high priest
He took my place
When the judge looks to me
He saw his sons face
Not gonna join you in
Your tower of babble, boy
Tired o that talkin
Im sick o that noise
Hey foot, straw foot
Low we lay em down
Hey foot, straw foot
Coverin ground
Im not alone
An looks can be deceivin
When we get down to it
Youre talkin when you
Should be leavin
Ive been to nebraska
It reminded me of spain
All the questions loaded
All my answers same
Hey foot, straw foot
Low we lay em down
Hay foot, straw foot
Coverin ground
Let us not mince our words
Lets say it true this time
I need your forgiveness
Just like you need mine
Tell me how it is that
You dont want what hes given
It aint no sin son
To be forgiven
Hey foot, straw foot
Low we lay em down
Hey foot, straw foot
All over town

Polly puts the kettle on

Polly puts the kettle on
Snakes rattle on insane
Round the kettle rattle on
All she puts is in vain

Polly bottles water deep
The taps mocks her ‘bravo’
But water steam stubborn peeps
The dishes clatter NO

‘The steam’s too high
Up on a ceiling
It winds too nigh
To a broken feeling’

‘What’ asks Polly
‘Hiss’ say snakes
‘What’s at stake
When kettles break? ’

‘What? ! ’ screams Polly
‘Hiss’ snakes curl
‘Ha ha ha ha ha ah
You bottle a whirl
My fair lady! ’

‘Why? ’ shouts Polly
‘Hiss’ snakes hide
Dragging down the water deep
‘Who? ’ asks Polly
The steam still glides
A broken feeling leaps
With heart in utter fear
‘Don’t ask for your daddy
He’s not ever here
My fair lady! ’

‘How? ’ stammers Polly
‘Has it happened?
Oh what a mistake to make!
To ever put the kettle on
When I’m not ready for the tea
My fingers are burnt
They swell in pain
I’ll just have to learn
Not to do that again! ’

Scripted Gold

To hell with the girls of new who regurgitate my ideas that I've sold
It irritates me to think that they think I wouldn't know
and guess that they starved my mind of its soul
Yet again to hell with these dogs that bleed
not a tear of repercussion when their mouths utter another's words
They're plagiarists stealing scripted gold
that leaves their tongues as worthless coal
for they lack the passion and attachment to the meaning
May they be dragged down below our hearts with their sinful deeds and soul
and join the underworld of hate and cold
because no pity is felt, no sympathy is given and no empathy is tried
when a nobody becomes a somebody through scripted gold

The Inn of Jasper Shrine

The coast was rugged and storm-swept as
I battled it in the rain,
The cliffs reared up, then fell away
To a flat, deserted plain,
The sea beat up in a thunder on
The rocks that lined the shore,
When I saw the wreck of a wayside inn
And its open, swinging door.

It hadn't appeared on the map, I knew
As I'd studied the bleak terrain,
The thing that I'd come here looking for
Was a wreck from the Spanish Main,
It lay in fifteen fathoms there
With a load of gold moidores,
Chased inshore by a privateer
And sunk, so my uncle swore.

He'd come on some ancient manuscripts
And the log of the Brig ‘Despair',
Washed up a hundred years ago
On the coastline near Llan Fair,
It roamed the seas three hundred years
Without a crew or a sail,
The log said most of the crew were dead
Tipped out by a great white whale.

The bones of the Captain, Peverell,
Lay slumped, right over the log,
It told of the Spanish galleon
And where it went down in the fog,
It told how the whale had tipped the brig
And broken the mast in two,
While the rest of the men had died of thirst
As it drifted, with the crew.

I came to the shelter of the Inn
And could read the swinging sign,
It carried a skull and a bottle of rum
And a name, ‘The Jasper Shrine',
The door hung loose on its hinges and
Gave out a creak and a moan,
The wind howled in at the windows
As the timbers swayed and groaned.

The storm continued to rage outside
At least I was warm and dry,
I lay that night on the upper floor
And stared straight up at the sky,
The thatch had fallen in holes and rain
Came pouring down in a stream,
But I was tucked in a corner, dry,
And there I began to dream.

It must have been two o'clock or so
When I heard a ghostly tap,
Of someone shuffling with a crutch
Then a mighty thunderclap,
A lantern gave out a ghastly light
Threw shadows along the stair,
And then a woman, her voice rang out,
‘Oh what, and who is it there? '

I peered on down and could see the wench
Her bonnet trimmed with lace,
But the burly sailor standing there,
I couldn't quite see his face,
Their dress was that of another time
When pirates sailed the sea,
The sailor brought down his cane with a crash,
‘They call me Cap'n Teague.'

‘Some pottage girl, and a brace of rum
To warm this sailor's cheeks,
My ship's aground and my fate's undone
I'm stranded here for weeks! '
‘You'll need to show me the King's good coin
Before you bite or sup,
I've had you sailors before round here
And you're hard on paying up.'

‘I have a chest of dubloons, ' he said
Moidores, and Spanish lace,
My chest will be here in the morning, girl,
So lift your pretty face,
Shift and get me the vittals that
Will warm my aching bones…'
‘No rum, not even a little, '
Said the girl, and turned to go.

Teague had bellowed and crashed his cane
Across the wench's head,
She fell at the foot of the stairs, and groaned
As her bonnet turned blood red,
‘I'll serve myself you foolish wench
Do you dare to challenge me? '
But the girl had stirred, rolled over
And cried out, ‘By God, you'll see! '

She pulled from out the folds of her dress
An ancient matchlock gun,
Cocked the trigger then aimed and fired
As the Captain turned and spun,
He hit the floor with a cry of pain
And the lantern flew out wide,
The light went out, and all I could hear
Was the sound of the turning tide.

I hid for the rest of the night, afraid
To venture down the stair,
I was cautious still in the morning
Thinking I'd find them dead down there,
But nothing lay in the dawning light
But the sign of time's contempt,
The floor was littered in seaweed and
Some old rat excrement.

My friend came up in a trawler
As we'd planned in the weeks before,
I'd quit the Inn for the final time
Took off through the swinging door,
We never came on the Spanish ship
But the Inn played on my mind,
I wondered, was it a dream or a ghost
At the Inn of Jasper Shrine?

Songs from The Beggar’s Opera: Air XVI-“Over the Hills, and Far Away”

Mac. Were I laid on Greenland’s coast,
And in my arms embraced my lass,
Warm amidst eternal frost,
Too soon the half-year’s night would pass.
Polly. Were I sold on Indian soil,
Soon as the burning day was closed,
I could mock the sultry toil
When on my charmer’s breast reposed.
Mac. And I would love you all the day,
Polly. Every night would kiss and play,
Mac. If with me you’d fondly stray
Polly. Over the hills, and far away.

The Front Tooth

A-sittin' in the Bull and Pump
With double gins to keep us cheery
Says she to me, says Polly Crump"
"What makes ye look so sweet. me dearie?
As if ye'd gotten back yer youth . . . ."
Says I: "It's just me new front tooth."

Says Polly Crump: "A gummy grin
Don't help to make one's business active;
We gels wot gains our bread by sin
Have got to make ourselves attractive.
I hope yer dentist was no rook?"
Says I: "A quid is what he took."

Says Polly Crump: "The shoes you wear
Are down at heel and need new soleing;
Why doncher buy a better pair?
The rain goes in and out the holeing.
They're squelchin' as ye walk yer beat. . . ."
Says I: "blokes don't look at me feet."

Says Polly Crump: "You cough all day;
It just don't do in our profession;
A girl's got to be pert and gay
To give a guy a good impression;
For if ye cough he's shy of you. . . ."
Says I: "An' wots a gel to do?"

Says Polly Crump: "I'm pink an' fat,
But you are bones an' pale as plaster;
At this dam' rate you're goin' at
You'll never live to be a laster.
You'll have the daisy roots for door. . . ."
Says I: "It's 'ell to be a 'ore.

"But I don't care now I can smile,
Smile, smile and not that gap-toothed grinning;
I'm wet and cold, but it's worth while
To once again look fairly winning.
And send ten bob or so to Mother. . . ."
Said Polly Crump: "Gwad! Have another?"

A Sunsetbonnet Blue

A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Shy little he and she
Were declaring love's old story
In the shade of the old apple tree,,
A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Decided to say, "i do"
So they rode to june and glory
On a bicycle built for two
Hear the past. the song is old.
The summer days are through
With silver threads among the gold
They still say, "i love you"
A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Are true to this very day
For he loves her in december
As he did in may

Polly Dibbs

Mrs Dibbs - Polly Dibbs,
Standing at a tub,
Washing other people's clothes -
Rub-Rub-Rub.
Poor, old, skinny arms
White with soapy foam -
At night she takes her shabby hat
And goes off home.

Mrs Dibbs - Polly Dibbs -
Is not very rich.
She goes abroad all day to scrub,
And home at night to stitch.
She wears her shabby hat awry,
Perched on a silly comb;
And people laugh at Polly Dibbs
As she goes home.

Mrs Dibbs - Mother Dibbs -
Growing very old,
Says, "it's a hard world!"
And sniffs and drats the cold.
She says it is a cruel world,
A weary world to roam.
But God will smile on Polly Dibbs
When she goes Home.
