Ms Found In A Belfry

I stared down at Whitechapel's Streets
Reflected through a mirror,
Safe closeted in darkness with
The Camera Obscura,
From this one central vantage point
My eyes ranged over all
The sad rack of humanity,
Its petty rise and fall,
The Toffs, clad in their Toppers, and
The Dollymops procuring,
The drunkards and the thieves and rogues,
Beyond man's curse or curing.

All types had passed me slowly by,
As I stood watching, praying,
That should the Lord declare his love
Those lives might be worth saving,
I saw but heads and shoulders from
Where I stood, looking down,
The lens was tilted from a height,
From Camera to the ground,
They passed like busy, swarming ants,
Unknowing that above
Two eyes were watching closely, each
And every passing move.

Good Queen Victoria, bless her soul
Reigned over us on high,
Reigned over this unwholesome den
Of blind iniquity,
The people's pain and poverty
Showed up on every face,
It brought good men to curse and drink
And women to disgrace,
And worse, the streets of London then
Gave out some awful mist
Of evil humours, deadly sins
The poor could not resist.

Summer came and went, and then
Upon that final day,
Foul murder was to come to haunt
Each woman's right of way,
For Mary Nicholls, prostitute,
A shallow, aimless drunk,
Was found in Bucks Row, murdered there,
With little argument;
Her throat was slashed, her face destroyed,
Her body ripped and torn,
It was like some wild animal
On London streets was born.

A week went by, and Annie Chapman
Passed along my way,
I saw her stop some stranger here
And ask the time of day.
Then off she went to meet that painful
Horrid, bloody fate,
The long knife and the sickening plunge,
The silent scream, too late!
Before the manic razor gleamed
And went to work its hell,
Disturbed her bowels and organs, left
Her corpse a bloodied shell.

Another week, a letter then arrived
At Central News,
Pressing home the killer's point,
The rabid killer's views,
But of remorse, there was no sign,
No hint of sadness there,
And it was signed, in scrawling pen,
Yours truly, 'Jack the Ripper.'
What panic then invaded all those
Alleys, yards and lanes,
The pubs were seen as safe, while fear
Coursed gutters, poured down drains.

Each victim from then on had passed
Beneath me, once or twice,
I was well versed in decadence
Along these streets of vice,
I took more of an interest when
I saw some stranger trace
The footsteps of a dollymop,
I tried to see their face,
But it was getting harder as
The rain came beating down,
And often mist would swirl on through
The streets of London Town.

As late September fell we saw
That poor old Lizzy Stride
Was razored at the throat, but strangely,
Not much else beside.
So could it be that, just this once,
The 'Ripper' was disturbed
From cutting, slashing, finishing,
His trademark ripping curbed?
So thought the police, and yet too soon
Within the very hour,
Another woman's corpse was bled
To prove the 'Ripper's' power.

Catherine Eddowes corpse was slashed
And razored, ear to ear,
Her blood was scattered everywhere,
Her kidney disappeared,
Though half of it was posted back
A little later on,
The letter said he'd cooked and eaten
All of what was gone.
The police were getting nowhere
With their methods or their search,
But I... I knew, and so in faith
I had to go to church.

I'd seen a face look up at me
And stand out from the crowd,
A face that picked out every victim,
Followed with her shroud,
And so I found the pew, and saw
The figure lightly perch,
And cross itself uneasily
In Holy Mother Church,
So knowing what I'd have to do,
And soon as soon could be,
I asked the Lord his pardon, that
He'd start forgiving me.

I followed closely from then on to
Mary Kelly's place,
I thought that I'd have time to spare,
But found I'd lost the race.
I heard the screams of murder from
The centre of the house,
The doors were bolted, windows barred,
And no-one could I rouse,
But once the deed was done inside
A head peered out in vain,
I clubbed it well, to end the spell
Of Jack the Ripper's reign.

She's hanging in the bell-tower from
The rope that rings the bell,
And when the parson pulls, it may
Just ring her in, to hell!
A nurse, whose husband thought to stray
For one brief taste of bliss,
Then brought it home to her, she said,
That dreadful syphilis!
So in revenge she murdered them,
The women of ill fame,
And blamed all men by using then
The 'Jack the Ripper' name.

30 September 2008

Anniversary of the murders of Elizabeth Stride
and Catherine Eddowes by Jack the Ripper,

The Ripper

(Originally performed by Judas Priest)
You're in for surprise
You're in for a shock
In London town streets
When there's darkness and fog
When you least expect me
And you turn your back
I'll attack
I smile when I'm sneaking
Through shadows by the wall
I laugh when I'm creeping
But you won't hear me at all
All hear my warning
Never turn your back
On the ripper
You'll soon shake with fear
Never knowing if I'm near
I'm sly and I'm shameless
Nocturnal and nameless
Except for 'The Ripper'
Or if you like 'Jack The Knife'
Any back alley street
Is where we'll probably meet
Underneath a gas lamp
Where the air's cold and damp
I'm a nasty surprise
I'm a devil in disguise
I'm a footstep at night
I'm a scream of the fright
All hear my warning
Never turn your back
On the ripper...the ripper....the ripper

Jack the Ripper

in every city
of the world
there is a
jack the ripper

he scoffs and
laughts at
those he killed

and also those
he did not kill

there is a jack
the ripper in
every city
of the world

he tears at
all our heart

from behind
the door

behind our back

leaving us
helpless
sobbing
through the night

there is a jack
the ripper
in every city

he scoffs at
our front
and our back

yet like our
shadow we
could never
pin him down

he trails us
day and night
leaving a
foreboding
menacing
darkness
in the corridors
of our mind

there is a
jack the ripper
in every city

ever ready
to jump at
you anytime
anywhere
given an
ounce of
the darkness
of night

The Ripping Skies

We often gaze at the heavens above,
hoping, hoping that they're falling in love,
When the Ripper his illusions doth weave,
for in reality our heavens do cleave.

I remember when once there was one sky,
under which nobody would truly die,
as darkness forever ceased to exist,
when our tears we could truly resist.

Thence the Ripper came to end all joy,
ethereally making us his toy,
and with the fire of the 'star'
did he form my mighty scar.

And so his sin cometh still,
slithering, weaving for the sky to fill,
enthralled, at the ripping of the skies to stare,
ever deeper into the Ripper's evil glare.

To Jack

SO, I’ve battled it through on my own, Jack,
I have done with all dreaming and doubt.
Though “stoney” to-night and alone, Jack,
I am watching the Old Year out.
I have finished with brooding and fears,
Jack, And the spirit is rising in me,
For the sake of the old New Years, Jack,
And the bright New Years to be.

I have fallen in worldly disgrace, Jack,
And I know very well that you heard;
They have blackened my name in this place, Jack,
And I answered them never a word.
But why should I bluster or grieve,
Jack? So narrow and paltry they be—
I knew you would never believe, Jack,
The lies that were said against me.

That is done which shall never be undone,
And I blame not, I blame not my land,
But I’m hearing the Calling of London,
And I long for the roar of the Strand.
It was always the same with our race,
Jack; You know how a vagabond feels—
We can fight a straight man face to face, Jack.
But we can’t keep the curs from our heels.

You know I loved women and drink, Jack,
And that’s how the trouble began;
But you know that I never would shrink,
Jack, From a deed that was worthy a man!
I never was paltry or mean, Jack.
And cruel I never could be,
I will give you a hand which is clean,
Jack, When we meet again over the sea.

I will bring a few wrinkles of care,
Jack; I have altered a lot, I am told;
The steel-filings show in my hair, Jack;
But my heart is as young as of old.
I have faith still in women, and men, Jack,
Though selfish and blind they may be.
I still have my soul and my pen, Jack,
And my country seems dearer to me.

I will sail when your summer sets in, Jack,
And good-bye to my own native land;
Oh, I long for a glimpse of your grin, Jack,
And I long for the grip of your hand.
We both suffered sorrow and pain, Jack,
And sinned in the days that are done;
But we’ll fight the old battle again, Jack,
Where the battle is worth being won.

She's Got The Jack

She gave me the Queen
She gave me the King
She was wheelin' and dealin'
Just doin' her thing
She was holdin' a pair
But I had to try
Her Deuce was wild
But my Ace was high
But how was I to know
That she'd been dealt with before
Said she'd never had a Full House
But I should have known
From the tattoo on her left leg
And the garter on her right
She'd have the card to bring me down
If she played it right
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
She's got the jack
Poker face was her name
Poker face was her nature
Poker straight was her game
If she knew she could get you
She played 'em fast
And she played 'em hard
She could close her eyes
And feel every card
But how was I to know
That she'd been shuffled before
Said she'd never had a Royal Flush
But I should have known
That all the cards were comin'
From the bottom of the pack
And if I'd known what she was dealin' out
I'd have dealt it back
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, and who knows what else?
She's got the jack, yeah, yeah
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
She's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack,
Ooh, It was a bad deal, (Jack)
She gave me the (Jack), hey
She's got the (Jack), she's got the (Jack)
She's got the (Jack), ooh can't you tell
She's got the (Jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack)
(She's got the jack, she's got the Jack)
She's got the jack, she's got the Jack
She's got the jack, you never know!
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack
She's got the jack, and it hurts!
(She's got the jack)
She's got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
She's got the jack
Aaaaaah!
Oooooh!
Thank you, thank you, thank you people, thank you, thank you
I'm glad you like the show, yes, thank you very much folks.
Goodnight and God bless

Killer On The Loose

Some people they call me jack
Some people they call me insane
Im looking for somebody
And I dont even know her name
I might be looking for you
Wherever you may be
For there is something Ive got to do to you honey
And its between you and me
Now you might think its funny
Or maybe its a joke
But youve got plenty of reason to worry honey
'cause you wouldnt stand a hope
Theres a killer on the loose again
A killer on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
A ladykiller on the loose
Now Im not trying to be nasty
Or Im not trying to make you scared
But theres a killer on the loose
Or havent you heard
Hell be walking around this town
Just about midnight
Yes, thats chinatown
Thats right
Thats right
Now you might think Im messing
Or he dont exist
But honey Im confessing
Im a mad sexual rapist
Theres a killer on the loose again
A killer on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
A ladykiller on the loose
Ill be standing in the shadows of love
Waiting for you
Dont unzip your zipper
'cause you know Im jack the ripper
Now dont wail, dont...
Theres a killer on the loose again
Standing in the shadows
A killer on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
Coming to get you
A ladykiller on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
Standing in the shadows of love
A killer on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
Thats right jack
A ladykiller on the loose
Theres a killer on the loose again
Standing in the shadow
A killer on the loose again, of love
Theres a killer on the loose again
Oooh
You better watch out
A killer on the loose
Play that back
Check it back

Sometimes I'm James Bond
Sometimes I'm Billy The Kid
Sometimes I feel like Sherlock Holmes
Sometimes I feel like Jack The Ripper
'Cause I got an image out of control
Identity crisisis
I don't need a new face
'Cause mine's been erased

Sometimes I'm on a case
Sometimes I'm shooting bad dudes
Sometimes I'm slashing the face
Sometimes I'm looking for clues
Sometimes I'm braking the law
Sometimes I'm solving a crime
I'm always fast on the draw
I get the girls all the time
'Cause I got an image out of control

I don't need a new face
'Cause mine's been erased

Jack The Ripper

[this track only on the cassette version]
Milky, and I'm back
My ace in the hole was this brand new track
I'ma slow it up and speed it up and now you're gonna eat it up
Listen to the funky beat, my tongue is gonna beat it up
I did it, but the devil didn't make me
I did it for the suckers who tried to shake and bake me
Proving a point that I'm a serious joint
You can roll me up and puff me, and then I'll anoint
Your head with oil--lots of oil
Make it run like water, watch it boil
Cause I made 'em play it, made 'em say it
made 'em okay it, made 'em obey it---HUH
Prince of the growl is on the prowl
How You Like Me Now punk? You living foul
Here's what my game is, kill is what my aim is
A washed up rapper needs a washer, my name is--
[Chorus:]
Jack the Ripper
Jack-Jack-Jack the Ripper
Jack-Jack, Jack-Jack, Jack-Jack, Jack the Ripper
King Hercules!
Back for the payback, I must say that
I heard your new jam, I don't play that
It ain't loud enough punk, it ain't hitting
This year you tried, next year you're quitting
Last year you thought I was dying out
But again, and again, and again without a doubt
It's the gangster boogie, the earthquake sound
Pump it up and play it so they hear it all around
I do it up rough, tough, I don't bluff
and this is an example of funky stuff
When you wanna make hits, you make 'em like this
They ain't like this they don't hit, they miss
It's a strong record, a record for the strong
For those who appreciate real rap songs
Listen how I won't allow myself to go off track
Stay back, I got the power, I'm--
[Chorus]
Jack the Ripper, a man, not a myth
a-k-a James Todd Smith
Hard like penitentiary steel
Breaking necks while I flex my sex appeal
Homegirls in the house, c'mon
Homegirls in the house, give it up
You gotta want to get hotter
Moving and grooving, and always improving a lot'a
People don't know how nice I am
He was sleeping, so now I gotta slice my man
Like ham in a pan, wrap him up in Saran
Kidnap him and slap him up inside of a van
While you're doing your dance I want you to make moves
No one out there thought you could do
You know my name and my game and what I'm here to do
Party people, lemme see if you can dance to--
[Chorus]
Break it down! [x3]
Yo Bob, show that old school sucker punk what real hip hop is boy
[scratches]
"How Ya Like Me Now?" I'm getting busier
I'm double platinum, I'm watching you get dizzier
Check out the way I say my, display my, play my
'J' on the back, behind the Cool, without the A-Y
I love to ride the groove because the groove is smooth
It makes me move and I'll improve
As it goes on, as it flows on
When you see me, don't ask if the show's on
How that sound? Don't came around, playing me close, brown
Pull on my jock to be down
You need to stay down, way down, because you're low down
Do that dance, the prince of rap is gonna throw down
Aiming to please while I'm killing emcees
I'm gonna keep on hitting you with rough LPs
Day after day after day
You're smacked in the face by the bass of Cool J
I'm--[scratches]
I'm a beast on the microphone, a night stalker
A killing machine, a savage street talker
Jason with an axe, but I put it on wax
To eradicate the suckers who thought I had relaxed
The prince of hip hop, straight from Queens
Kicking it mean, keeping it clean
And you've never seen anybody rock the party
All you funky beat-aholics, this beat's Bacardi
I go to the show, and terrorize emcees, don't you know
Moving my hand like I'm playing the piano
Don't touch the dial, don't change the channel
Don't let me hear you say I ain't debonair
I'm better than any emcee out there
As a matter of fact, suckers can't compare
When I rocking the mic people stop and stare, at..

London

It was november 4th
I last held your hand
It seemed our time would last forever
You said dont ever leave
I thought youd never go
I wish I could just remember your name...
Youre just a memory now
Like all the ones before
But with your pain Ive had to suffer
Your eyes alight with flame
As the picture burns
I hear the screams from long ago
They cry remember, blood-red streaks on
Velvet throats at night
The streetlights fanned our trail of fame
Through
London london
The memories will never leave me
London london
All I see is you
London london
The cries in the night
Keep bringing me to
London london
Calling out to me
Oh theres some things in life I could never face
The worst is being alone
Sometimes I wish I could have taken your
Place my love
You know I dont want to live forever
Oh let me see you standing in the
Shadows once again
Well walk the streets like long ago in
London london
The fire in your eyes will be bringing me to
London london
All I need is you
The cries in the night keep ringing on in
London london
Calling out to you

Wherefore This Life

Wherefore This Life

-T.Amanyu
1, September,2008

We knew the time had come,
And the time had come, we knew,
For the grievous lords had called on us
Before on the lea had set the dew.

And I didst espy the other men go
Passing my hut and Charles’ farm too.
Through the haunts of snakes and beasts,
I watched them as they quietly did move.

‘Wherefore do ye walk’ I asked one
To be answer’d by chilly silence.
So like any other man, I from my house sprang,
And made towards the jungle dense.

We walked and walked for many days;
Still not a stain of strain dud we feel.
We passed cold nights still trudging way,
Fain forgetting our own weal.

We passed the tall thickets profound,
Where at morn beasts wild prowl.
We trod our way o’er courage and faith;
Boldly under the ogre’s growl.

Nests of dainty birds passed us,
On top of the redwoods’ high boughs;
Or rather we passed them,
In this place which no one loves.

We passed the moors and lakes immense,
And passed the birds under heaven’s eye.
We passed some blissful beasts and plants;
Thither- somewhere where one must die.

And all through my way I found,
But vain, melancholy and grief;
And then was it that I fathomed my way-
Towards a battlefield… that of life.

The battle began- the battle of life.
With no weapons, the halcyon war.
I fought bravely under depths of grief;
Till I knew I from death was not far.

And I felt myself by an arrow hit hard;
Of love which no witchcraft can erase,
The eternity whereof I’ve felt aye in my life
And now I am with death face to face.

Now I feel myself on the thorns of life,
And I bleed upon this evil time.
And then goes my soul and my life an’ my corpse;
Languidly into the hanging blue rime.

I have returned.

I have returned to carry out,
the task I had to leave undone.
You will soon that Jacks about.
I’m Jack the Rippers great grandson.

I was reborn to continue
my campaign started long ago.
Although you can’t believe it’s true.
That show how little that you know.

I’ll rid the streets of prostitutes
who try to lead good men astray
Reducing them to lustful beasts.
These women are my lawful prey.

To prove that I am really Jack.
I will leave my usual clue
at the site of each attack.
In the same way I used to do.

I’ll take some little souvenir
to add to my collection
A kidney or perhaps an ear
As I did in days long gone.

I will select them carefully
The women who I’ve come to kill.
I know police will hunt for me
which adds a little to the thrill.

I slew my first victim today.
In Whitechapel would you believe.
You can rely that what I say
is no more than I can achieve.

There is no doubt that fear will reign
amongst the ladies of the night
As I renew my old campaign.
I am still Jack I strike at night.

I am not just some copy cat
who seeks to emulate my deeds
You can be very sure of that.
This is a warning all should heed.

My name is Jack and I am back.
Despite modern technology
I will be just as hard to track.
If Lady Luck still favours me.

Dark Streets Of London

I like to walk in the summer breeze
Down dalling road by the dead old trees
And drink with my friends
In the hammersmith broadway
Dear dirty delightful old drunken old days
Then the winter came down and I loved it so dearly
The pubs and the bookies where youd spend all your time
And the old men that were singing
When the roses bloom again
And turn like the leaves
To a new summertime
Now the winter comes down
I cant stand the chill
That comes to the streets around christmas time
And Im buggered to damnation
And I havent got a penny
To wander the dark streets of london
Every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ect
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me
Now the winter comes down
I cant stand the chill
That comes to the streets around christmas time
And Im buggered to damnation
And I havent got a penny
To wander the dark streets of london
Every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ect
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me
Now the winter comes down
I cant stand the chill

Finding Me

I was the victim
I am the killer
Of a young man I left this September

He picked me up, showed me around
This shrouded, pretty mind I'd found

Nothing else matters, I do not think
The man in red, the girl in pink

I've found myself, the first time ever
And this is the way I'll stay forever

I am the killer
I was the victim
Of a shy guy left behind that September

An Amnesiac Remembers

The amnesiac who had forgotten that his name was Albert

Woke up one day as George

The amnesiac who called himself George

Woke up one day and forgot his name was George despite being born

Albert, and called himself Mary

Mary Shelly after his great Aunt Ada who liked to be called mary on her days off

But the amnesiac forgot why he wanted to be called mary and quickly changed his name to harry

Then one day while looking through the telephone directory to find his own address he remembered that his name was Albert

And that he had killed his dog and strangled his wife in an argument

about house work and cleaning fluids

Her body was buried somewhere in the back garden along with the dog

He was thankful that he couldn't remember exactly where

And went to bed and tried in vain

To forget it all again

When he awoke he forgot his name, was Albert

And called himself Jack, Jack the Ripper

And then he remembered he had murdered his wife and squashed the cat

He had sliced her in half with his black and decker chain saw

And mistaken the cat on the chair for a cushion

The cat was an accident he couldn't forget

He remembered that he had strangled the vet

Who he met by chance at the door

Who caught a glimpse of the cat's lifeless paw

He had seen too much to live

But Jack had a mind like a sieve

And went to bed hoping it was all just a dream

And that they were well and still lived

When he awoke he recalled that the vicar had called

And had made a scene

And he was appalled to find strange bodies heaped in the hall

Including a plumber a town crier and ex beauty queen

Plus a pensioner from number 23 and a man who had come to fix the T.V

Speechless the amnesiac returned to his bed

Swallowed a hundred blue pills

By morning his wife found him dead

The coroner reported 'Death by misadventure victim appears to have choked on his denture

A happy father of three

He liked to read and watch the T.V

He was insomniac forgetful at times

But his record was 'clean' he'd committed no crimes

He leaves behind, a wife a cat a dog three kids, a retired vicar

A plumber an ex beauty queen an anonymous man who had come to fix the T.V

And a black an decker chain saw

May he Rest In Peace

White Picket Fence

i've cut off the curls
I shaved half my face
Became half the man you asked to replace.
I'm willing to save you
You said you're worth saving
But half of my appetite's lost half it's craving
Stand in the mirror
That's me beside you
The one with the smile, the one who abides you.
Don't mind the madman
The killer, the lover
He's slowly fading one into the other.
Where is that white picket fence
That i painted myself in the late days of april?
Where are the daffodil mountians?
I know that they're somewhere around here by the garden.
You say that you're happy
Well you should know better
I see that you've sewn up that rip in your sweater
That some lover tore off you
That left you both shaking
That bled deep inside you the wound you'd forsaken
Where is that white picket fence
That i painted myself in the late days of april?
Where are the daffodil mountians?
I know that they're somewhere around here by the garden.
Don't fear i will save you
Don't shout you'll awaken
The corpse in the desert staked out beside you
I cut off his wing
And shaved half his face
But i thought that i saw his eyes...move

The Mad Wanderer

There came to Grasmere's pleasant vale
A stranger maid in tatters clad,
Whose eyes were wild, whose cheek was pale,
While oft she cried, "Poor Kate is mad!"

Four words were all she'd ever say,
Nor would she shelter in a cot;
And e'en in winter's coldest day
She still would cry, "My brain is hot."

A look she had of better days;
And once, while o'er the hills she ranged,
We saw her on her tatters gaze,
And heard her say, "How Kate is changed!"

Whene'er she heard the death-bell sound,
Her face grew dreadful to behold;
She started, trembled, beat the ground,
And shuddering cried, "Poor Kate is cold!"

And when to church we brought the dead,
She came in ragged mourning drest;
The coffin-plate she trembling read,
Then laughing cried, "Poor Kate is blest!"

But when a wedding peal was rung,
With dark revengeful leer she smiled,
And, curses muttering on her tongue,
She loudly screamed, "Poor Kate is wild!"

To be in Grasmere church interred,
A corpse one day from far was brought;
Poor Kate the death-bell sounding heard,
And reached the aisle as quick as thought:

When on the coffin looking down,
She started, screamed, and back retired,
Then clasped it....breathing such a groan!
And with that dreadful groan expired.

The Cross Roads

There was an old man breaking stones
To mend the turnpike way,
He sat him down beside a brook
And out his bread and cheese he took,
For now it was mid-day.

He lent his back against a post,
His feet the brook ran by;
And there were water-cresses growing,
And pleasant was the water's flowing
For he was hot and dry.

A soldier with his knapsack on
Came travelling o'er the down,
The sun was strong and he was tired,
And of the old man he enquired
How far to Bristol town.

Half an hour's walk for a young man
By lanes and fields and stiles.
But you the foot-path do not know,
And if along the road you go
Why then 'tis three good miles.

The soldier took his knapsack off
For he was hot and dry;
And out his bread and cheese he took
And he sat down beside the brook
To dine in company.

Old friend! in faith, the soldier says
I envy you almost;
My shoulders have been sorely prest
And I should like to sit and rest,
My back against that post.

In such a sweltering day as this
A knapsack is the devil!
And if on t'other side I sat
It would not only spoil our chat
But make me seem uncivil.

The old man laugh'd and moved. I wish
It were a great-arm'd chair!
But this may help a man at need;
And yet it was a cursed deed
That ever brought it there.

There's a poor girl lies buried here
Beneath this very place.
The earth upon her corpse is prest
This stake is driven into her breast
And a stone is on her face.

The soldier had but just lent back
And now he half rose up.
There's sure no harm in dining here,
My friend? and yet to be sincere
I should not like to sup.

God rest her! she is still enough
Who sleeps beneath our feet!
The old man cried. No harm I trow
She ever did herself, tho' now
She lies where four roads meet.

I have past by about that hour
When men are not most brave,
It did not make my heart to fail,
And I have heard the nightingale
Sing sweetly on her grave.

I have past by about that hour
When Ghosts their freedom have,
But there was nothing here to fright,
And I have seen the glow-worm's light
Shine on the poor girl's grave.

There's one who like a Christian lies
Beneath the church-tree's shade;
I'd rather go a long mile round
Than pass at evening thro' the ground
Wherein that man is laid.

There's one that in the church-yard lies
For whom the bell did toll;
He lies in consecrated ground,
But for all the wealth in Bristol town
I would not be with his soul!

Did'st see a house below the hill
That the winds and the rains destroy?
'Twas then a farm where he did dwell,
And I remember it full well
When I was a growing boy.

And she was a poor parish girl
That came up from the west,
From service hard she ran away
And at that house in evil day
Was taken in to rest.

The man he was a wicked man
And an evil life he led;
Rage made his cheek grow deadly white
And his grey eyes were large and light,
And in anger they grew red.

The man was bad, the mother worse,
Bad fruit of a bad stem,
'Twould make your hair to stand-on-end
If I should tell to you my friend
The things that were told of them!

Did'st see an out-house standing by?
The walls alone remain;
It was a stable then, but now
Its mossy roof has fallen through
All rotted by the rain.

The poor girl she had serv'd with them
Some half-a-year, or more,
When she was found hung up one day
Stiff as a corpse and cold as clay
Behind that stable door!

It is a very lonesome place,
No hut or house is near;
Should one meet a murderer there alone
'Twere vain to scream, and the dying groan
Would never reach mortal ear.

And there were strange reports about
That the coroner never guest.
So he decreed that she should lie
Where four roads meet in infamy,
With a stake drove in her breast.

Upon a board they carried her
To the place where four roads met,
And I was one among the throng
That hither followed them along,
I shall never the sight forget!

They carried her upon a board
In the cloaths in which she died;
I saw the cap blow off her head,
Her face was of a dark dark red
Her eyes were starting wide:

I think they could not have been closed
So widely did they strain.
I never saw so dreadful a sight,
And it often made me wake at night,
For I saw her face again.

They laid her here where four roads meet.
Beneath this very place,
The earth upon her corpse was prest,
This post is driven into her breast,
And a stone is on her face.
