I remember coming to this college in the 1960s as a new legislator when a road divided the campus - and it was not fully paved at that - and no wall defined the campus from the highway.

The Undergraduate

He runs around the campus premises
All of his life, but the gate were closed all the time.
The wall is too high though he tries to jump
And the sentry is very rough inquires the documents.
He holds only his tattered certificate of birth
And it's already expired it seems for the enrollment.

Divided Highway

Simmons/peterik/fox
Two lanes - twistin down a dusty highway
Two souls - on their way to where it leads
Tail lights - fadin on the far horizon
But theres a detour on the road to destiny
It goes up in a blinding flash
When two reckless worlds collide
You cant avoid the crash
Sometimes in life we ride on
Divided highway - torn in two directions
Speedin out of sight through the night
Divided highway - stranded at the crossroads
Of whats wrong and whos right
Two hearts forgettin what they meant to each other
Too proud ever to admit the truth
Someday itll all seem clear
When two reckless worlds collide
Its gonna turn to tears
Why must we always ride a divided highway
On the road baby no-ones safe
When two reckless worlds collide
When we defend our faith
Thats when in life we ride a divided highway
Shuttin out the other side
Divided highway clingin to our foolish pride
Out on the road nowhere; nowhere to hide
Why must we always ride a divided highway
Torn in two directions; speedin outa sight
Divided highway stranded at the crossroads
Of whats wrong and whos right
Divided highway cuttin through the darkness
Searchin for the light
Divided highway ridin on the fine line
Between day and nite
Divided highway

The Campus Cat

Shivering and wet
Had been drenched by a drizzling rain
The Campus cat waits, beneath a lamppost

She had come, to brave, the cold
For rent has to be paid, a life is to be lived,
The landlord, a deadline he did.

Conjuring home images, sky, the Stars lit,
Father, mother, and siblings, faces bright
She had passed, colours flew, a future, then, so bright.

Hmnn, in campus, Eat as you pay!
Or rent a cube, pay, get on with life, read, pray!
Pockets run dry, no food, just nothing, home is away!

Hmnn, a car, pulls
The campus cat, cat walks,
Hand beckons, door closed, tomorrow, lectures!

Academics often discount the value of top-rated sports programs in helping to develop a campus life and in contributing to the overall success of a college or university. Like it or not, the sports programs a college or university has are the front page of that university.

Teamster on the Run

Think of a burly guy in leather jacket
baseball cap bill shadowing broken nose
hamhock mitts dangling at his side

Stereotype, you protest! Show me
a mug like this who frequents
the coffee shops in Hyde Park

near the University of Chicago campus
sitting at a table poring over Sartre
or whoever the latest avant garde

may happen to be whom professors favor!
If you do spot such a creature on campus,
he's either unloading a truck out back
or he's visiting his granddaughter!

Blue Collar Guy

Imagine a burly guy in denim jacket
capbill shadowing busted nose
hairy mitts gripping coffee mug

sitting at a table in the Union
on the campus in Hyde Park
gazing with wonder at a girl

seated opposite him
bright-eyed and fresh
in sweater and jeans

I thought then of my father
a man who had toiled
a lifetime in the mills

so that one day he might
visit one of his children
on a university campus

He was a blue collar guy
who never read poetry -
his life was an epic!

My first taste of the importance of a college education

I remember going
to my first Chicano Higher Education Conference
in January of 1969
in a barren place of
University of Whitewater, Wisconsin

my brother Juan drove a white university station wagon
to his hometown Racine
that Friday night
to pick me and my other brother up

I had never been to a college campus before
but from stories I had heard
college was a cross between
Disneyland and
a crowded New York subway on Times Square on New Years Eve

all I can recall from the two hour ride
was a flashing red light
at the intersection of Highways 20 & 83
there were no cars in sight
just a warning…

we arrived on campus at 11 pm
and went to the student union
where we listened to an acid rock band
playing to a crowd of Chicanos and Blacks
no dancing occurred
just meditating

A college friend offered up his room
and slept at his girlfriend's
at 3: 30 am
seven of us shared
the beds, floor and mushroom chair
but I didn’t get much sleep

we snuck into the cafeteria
in the morning
when a football playing black friend named “Big C”
stood in the way of the cashier

the first workshop
was on bilingual education
and the speaker was so excited
he used a lot of big words
I had never heard before
so I figured bilingual education
must be important
or he wouldn’t have been so serious

the only bilingual education
I had ever heard of
was mentioned once in
our Mexican-American history class
taught by the only Mexican-American teacher
in our high school

the last workshop
was on getting more students enrolled in higher education
the speaker Corky Gonzales
was also a poet
and he told us
“we were the future of our people”

I stared at the blackboard
in that college classroom
and felt strange
about all the times
I had raised my hand in grade school
and my teacher
did not call on me
or want to hear my answer

My Mother Never Know

my mother never know
after my father past away
I walk to campus through Malioboro without shoes
(only with sandals) to Campus
I embarasment to meet my friend
Every day I learn at the library and finished the next step
Not yet finished for preparing the future
With my stomag empty
When I hungry I only eat gado-gado, cassave and a glass of water
For entering my mother dreams
To become civil service after finished its
Like what my father do
Who never have opportunity to have a house for their children
Because I never have to the heart to cut my my dreams
Although my heart restlessness

The ember fanned

I had with you a hearty contact
In the audio medium,
Running over minutes,
And I was fully charged.
We enlarged it to engage each other
By speaking much nonsense,
Save the one from which I discerned
That you were eager to see
Me on some pretext
In your campus as before,
And that you granted me a boon
To see you at your den. Enough.
I am living, not dying.

Echoes Of Notre Dame

Do you hear the echo
Across the campus
Of old Notre Dame
It's the awaking
Of the spirits
Of her past football fame
To lead them on
To victory
For we love her true
So listen
All you people listen
The ehco
Is coming after you

The Road We're On

'It's all a road we build'
he said
'you lay down the concrete
or tar for the asphalt;

you heat it
and take it through all the stages
with yellow lines
white lines-
a road has to have
boundaries and destinations.

There are the road signs:
'caution'
'soft shoulder'
'curves ahead'
'pedestrians'
'stop ahead'
'divided highway.'
'no u-turns.'
'highway patrol station

The thought
is whether the road we build
is our own
and whether it leads where we
want to go
and who on the road
we're traveling with.

Just like life.
Up and down hills;
speed bumps
parking lots
long rides

The trick is not to be
a highway statistic
didn't see the stop sign
ran over too many pedestrians.
or a high speed causality
best to hope for soft shoulders
and broad lanes
and the laughter of friends
as the sun shines overhead
taking us
home.

Remembering You On A Hot Summer Day

college was not that cruel
we were in fact crazy, looking for thrills
dark movie houses, we tried to know what
rubbing means and touching the wrong parts
of our bodies, we spat we swallowed some
errors and laughed the hardest when we
finally got wet... with what? with whom?
when was that? do you remember?
do you miss them? or me?

the campus grounds were always greener
the trees with more leaves
and the chapel were full of us
worshippers
we had written more poems
that now when we try reading again
our bodies shake
we giggle about our romantic clumsiness
when we fell in love
to the wrong person the wrong time the wrong place

you left the country for good
hmmm, chicago and new york and maryland
dollars, in the name of the mighty dollars and
family above all
college and a new house, a farm to develop
students to send to universities

it is a hot summer day here
i am getting older and
hmm, not really lonelier, just missing you
just plain nostalgic moments

this clumsiness of being out of love
when everyone is getting over with poverty
escaping away from third world prisons

this sigh of not being one with the rest
they have forgotten how to read
the lines of poetry, moving on with their lives
away..... where can the rest be? i do not know...

but just in case.... here i am...it is still me
on a hot summer day...those college days...still clumsy...
