The Campus Cat

Shivering and wet
Had been drenched by a drizzling rain
The Campus cat waits, beneath a lamppost

She had come, to brave, the cold
For rent has to be paid, a life is to be lived,
The landlord, a deadline he did.

Conjuring home images, sky, the Stars lit,
Father, mother, and siblings, faces bright
She had passed, colours flew, a future, then, so bright.

Hmnn, in campus, Eat as you pay!
Or rent a cube, pay, get on with life, read, pray!
Pockets run dry, no food, just nothing, home is away!

Hmnn, a car, pulls
The campus cat, cat walks,
Hand beckons, door closed, tomorrow, lectures!

Blue Collar Guy

Imagine a burly guy in denim jacket
capbill shadowing busted nose
hairy mitts gripping coffee mug

sitting at a table in the Union
on the campus in Hyde Park
gazing with wonder at a girl

seated opposite him
bright-eyed and fresh
in sweater and jeans

I thought then of my father
a man who had toiled
a lifetime in the mills

so that one day he might
visit one of his children
on a university campus

He was a blue collar guy
who never read poetry -
his life was an epic!

The Undergraduate

He runs around the campus premises
All of his life, but the gate were closed all the time.
The wall is too high though he tries to jump
And the sentry is very rough inquires the documents.
He holds only his tattered certificate of birth
And it's already expired it seems for the enrollment.

My Mother Never Know

my mother never know
after my father past away
I walk to campus through Malioboro without shoes
(only with sandals) to Campus
I embarasment to meet my friend
Every day I learn at the library and finished the next step
Not yet finished for preparing the future
With my stomag empty
When I hungry I only eat gado-gado, cassave and a glass of water
For entering my mother dreams
To become civil service after finished its
Like what my father do
Who never have opportunity to have a house for their children
Because I never have to the heart to cut my my dreams
Although my heart restlessness

Goodbye To The Old Life

Goodbye to the old life,
to the sadness of rooms
where my family slept as I sat

late at night on my
island of light among papers.
Goodbye to the papers

and to the school for the rich
where I drove them, dressed up
in a tie to declare who I was.

Goodbye to all the ties
and to the life I lost
by declaring, and a fond goodbye

to the two junk cars that lurched
and banged through the campus
making it sure I would never fit in.

Goodbye to the finest campus
money could buy, and one
final goodbye to the paycheck

that was always gone
before I got it home.
Farewell to the home

and a heartfelt goodbye
to all the tenants who rented
the upstairs apartment,

particularly Mrs. Doucette,
whose washer overflowed
down the walls of our bathroom

every other week, and Mr. Green,
determined in spite of the evidence
to learn the electric guitar.

And to you there, the young man
on the roof turning the antenna
and trying not to look down

on how far love has taken you,
and to the faithful wife
in the downstairs window

shouting, "That's as good
as we're going to get it,"
and to the four hopeful children

staying with the whole program
despite the rolling picture
and the snow - goodbye,

wealth and joy to us all
in the new life, goodbye!

Home Of The Brave

Heres to johnny with his jo
And mickeys got a wife
And heres to jerry
He has got his joyce
And me, Im shaking
In my boots tonight
For the daughters and the sons
Lost in the home of the brave
And heres to the home of the brave
And heres to the life thats not saved
Heres to the home of the brave
Heres to the home of the brave
Heres to frank hit in some bar
In picturesque brooklyn heights
And heres to a friend who jumped in front of a train
At seven oclock one night
And another friend who thinks he lacks worth
Has disappeared from sight
Somewhere in the home
Of the brave
And heres to the home of the brave
And heres to the life thats not saved
Heres to the home of the brave
Heres to the home of the brave
The stars are hiding in their clouds
The street lights are too bright
A mans kicking a woman
Whos clutching his leg tight
And I think suddenly of you
And blink my eyes in fright
And rush off to the home
Of the brave
And heres to the home of the brave
Heres to the home of the brave
And heres to the life that is saved
Heres to the home of the brave
And everyday you have to die some
Cry some and die some
And everyday you have to die some
Cry some and die
In the home of the brave
Home of the brave

I'm Going Home

When my work here is oer
And trials come no more
On that great day I'm going home
To live forever more, just oer on heaven's shore
When my life here is oer I'm going home

Chorus
I'm going home, I'm going home
When my life here is oer I'm going home
Won't it be so sweet, to rest at Jesus feet
When my life here is oer I'm going home

I'm travelling in the light
And my way is clear and bright
Some glad day I'm going home
Heading for the pearly gates for there my savior waits
When my life here is oer I'm going home
As I travel down lifes road
So heavy is my load
But some glad day I'm going home
I'll meet my loved ones there, in that land so bright and fair
When my life here is oer I'm going home

baseball cap bill shadowing broken nose
hamhock mitts dangling at his side

Stereotype, you protest! Show me
a mug like this who frequents
the coffee shops in Hyde Park

sitting at a table poring over Sartre

may happen to be whom professors favor!

Home, Sweet Home

The childhood home wherein children, we stayed;
The cottage old in which we ate and prayed;
The humble garden, on our own, we laid;
The roof that leaked in rain, though rent was paid!

The tranquil place where parents gave us love;
The wonderful compound, where we worked, ‘wow! ’
The trees and plants that grew by heaven’s grace;
The sun, moon, rain, at which we loved to gaze!

That was the lovely place, in which we lived;
The home we kept quite clean and chores were shared;
Our parents slogged for us and deeply cared;
We sometimes fought although amity ruled!

Our father’s strictness taught us good conduct;
Our mother’s fondness disciplined our mind;
The help we rendered, made us feel the warmth;
Home, sweet home, was great despite some faults!

Home, sweet home, brings memories evergreen;
Comfortable, our mother’s house, had been;
Those days were most pleasant, despite our toil;
We lost our hearts upon that very soil!

Fire Alarms

The breath of sleep is heard
every room is quietly in
slumber world
on university Campus.

Fear no fire alarm –
6.50 fire alarm sirens echoes
all around
with the piercing noise
like a dog in pain.

Inside a room, the breath of sleep
is no longer heard
but the scrambles and
the bitter words of a start
to a morning, where
sleep was half undone.

No amusement is etched on
faces, grumpy, sleepy faces,
one by one appear
outside the door.
Sleepiness carved like wood
on faces:
as the fire alarm
continues to blare out its message.

Oh fire alarm, you wicked fire alarm;
always blare like a dog in pain
at the wrong time.
Slumber world has gone
on university
and my sleep was half undone
yet again.

(another day on campus in bed, when the fire alarm goes off, and we all have to go out in our pjamas at 6.50 in the morning. No amusement there. I dislike fire alarms nowadays with contempt.)

IRT School Of Nursing Alma Mater Song

Of School of Nursing, IRT,
We students are ready
To serve the sick and dying ones:
Patients who flock to us.

Today we all are poised to sing
And dance with joy and fly,
Like nightingales upon the tree
Of planet earth’s one life.

We are now trained quite pretty well,
Eager to serve the sick;
The time has come to toll the bell,
And burn life’s candle’s wick!

The years had passed off rather fast;
The life we spent was great;
We carry memories of past,
Ev’rgreen in mind’s, heart’s slate.

The campus green with foliage,
And birds of every kind;
And pea-fowls filled up our life’s page,
Snakes, scorpions we find.

The classrooms were both warm and cold;
Yet, teachers taught us well;
Their words were lettered in pure gold;
Our future work will tell.

Today, we take our steps outside
The campus that we loved;
With God and wisdom us beside,
We buds are well-flowered!

A noble cause, awaits us all –
To care for patients sick;
Glad that we heard Florence’s call,
We move ahead to prick!

We thank our nursing teachers who
Worked hard to change our fate;
We thank the doctors who shared too,
Their knowledge until date.

We thank our parents who stood by
Our problems in our life;
We thank the Maker, Almighty,
Who helped us face all strife.

A golden future awaits us!
There’s lots of work to do;
Life will award rewards and bliss;
We bid ‘Adieu’ to you.

Most lovingly dedicated to
The Principal, Staff and students of
IRT SON, Perundurai

Love to whom, who really lover you,
But never hate who does with you so,
Kindle the revolution in the heart of you,
And remove the baseless tradition like a foe.

In a town, there lived a handsome boy,
There lived a girl too, full of coy,
Both were young having strong intention,
They would meet and did long time mention.

The time passed their love got its culmination,
Castes were different but had sinkie thought,
And wished to marry they had determination,
And life-partner in each other they'd sought.

Race was the single obstacle in their wedding way,
They eloped and married and enjoyed a marital life,
Cause they never dare to their families say,
Now they began living happily but with strife.

Both families got angery knowing this deed,
His father warned not to come back,
They would be killed if they paid on heed,
All seasons passed, they didn't come back.

He begot four children with the passage of time,
Now their children got their prime,
Passing twenty years, once he thought,
Their elopement likely they had forgot.

With his family he started for his home,
To see his father's home children were keen,
Cause they had been fed up living in single home,
Cause their grandparents they had never seen.

Reaching that town, it began to rain,
Children were wet like blossoming flowers,
Somehow he managed to reach the door again,
Door was knocked snackly like it showers.

The door being opened, emerged his mother,
Seeing them her joys knew no bound,
Kissed and hugged, and let them enter,
And home filled for sometimes with joyful sound.

The father saw them, became red and red,
And frightened mother her tears began to shed,
He roared, ' You've lost my dignity,
So, on you can never be taken pity.'

He pushed into his room, emerged in little time,
There was gun in his old hand,
Shot at all, like attacks a lion in his prime,
A moment passed, all six were lying dead on the land.

He Wishes Upon The Evening Star

A small child sits upon a stump in the middle of the pasture
amid chirping crickets and glowing lightning bugs.
Looking up into the twilight,
a lone star twinkles, as if to say, “I am listening.”
He considers his words carefully, for such opportunities should not be wasted.
He knows he must finish this conversation before the other stars appear.
He recites a nursery rhyme.
“Star light, star bright…”
He wishes childlike: one word.
Happiness.

A young boy runs through the woods playing Hide and Seek,
laughter and voices echoing through the trees.
He steps into a clearing and looks up to the Heavens.
The first star hangs expectantly in the air.
He stands alone, outcast among the other children
as two by two, the couples dance.
He recites his mantra.
“Star light, star bright…”
He whispers two words as he is tagged “It”.
A soulmate.

A grown man walks through campus on his way home,
eerie silence blanketing him where there should be life.
Standing on the tracks, his soul heavy with loneliness,
his planet hangs steady and bright.
Doubts crawl through his mind.
He wants to share himself with somebody.
He boldly speaks his prayer.
“Star light, star bright…”
He speaks aloud three words,
Real True Love.

A broken man walks a long lonely walk.
His life is passing him by.
In an empty field, he drops to his knees and cries out
to a star that has never helped him.
A cathartic wail pierces the night.
He mumbles barely audible words.
“Star light, star bright…”
“I am still here, ” it says,
“I know what it is you would wish for -,
Peace.”

A new man breathes fresh air, seemingly for the first time.
He stands next to her and together they look
to the sky as they hold hands.
Neither can believe that this is real.
She goes inside while he tarries for a second
and begs forgiveness for falling into despair.
He whispers an apology.
“Star light, star bright…”
I’m sorry.
Please don’t let me lose her.

An old man lies dying with his family all around him.
He gazes lovingly into her bright shining eyes and
she looks as beautiful now as she did when he first saw her.
All of his wishes have been granted.
She squeezes his hand and they look out the window.
It is brighter tonight than it ever has been before.
He says with his last breath,
“Star light, star bright…”
Thank You.
For Her.

A death in the opposite house!

[Mother-that was the bank where we deposited our hurts and worries.]-Thomas De Witt Talmage

I was sitting on a small chair
in the patio,
Like bygone Seafarer days on ship's deck?
And my beloved boils the Asparagus for tonight
in the kitchenette.
I count secretly who crawls to the funeral house?
A lady with an umbrella in this late evening drizzle
Squeezing my hand that resembles Ms.E-death in my nightmare,
inquires me; 'Honey! Funeral is here? '
I pointed out her the front house with my index finger
and murmured to myself 'Thank God! still I breath comfortable here? '

The Rain Maker

Dull clouds shade the bright stars in the sky
Bring rain to fuel my desire.
Bring rain to feed the masses.
Bring rain to make the world green and lively
Then shoo the clouds away to begin a new day.

Created by the man above
To give life the world below
Supplied by Mother Nature
And Father Earth to provide life
So that man can exist, live, and work for a better future.

Man sows the land and seeds the dirt.
Flowers sprout, bountiful vegetables.
Powerful smells of the future so bright.
Love and nourishment for the masses
Become the Rain Maker.

It is His gift to man.
Rain shrouds the gray sky.
He makes the rain so we can live
To serve Him on the mortal lands.
He is the Rain Maker.
