Pizzeria
I was serving Pizza to the tables
A Restaurant in Venice, Italy.
An old man came in a Gondola with a pipe in his mouth.
I greeted him and he ordered a dish.
I said; 'You resembled Signor Alberto Moravia.
'If I am not mistaken the movie 'A Ghost at noon or Contempt', filmed by Jean-Luc Godard, is that your novel? '
After the meal he just smiled and gave his name card and left the Restaurant leaving all his change on the table.
As soon as I woke up early in the morning
I grumbled with my wife about the name card.
Then she jumped at me and cried; 'You Rasputin must be having a date with a tart? '
I just kept quiet and thought of my strange dream.
* I remember in my school days our film society arranged an Italian film festival, slightly come to my mind some film cut-outs of Jean-Luc Godard & Vittorio De Sica.

I remember in 1968 when we were in Cannes, in the festival, and we were supposed to be there 10 days, and the second day the festival collapsed because the French, you know, film-makers raised the red flag in the festival and ended the festival.

Doing comedy for film is always a challenge because you are in the hands of the editor after the fact. I am hoping I can do some more soon, I enjoy doing comedy.

Venice Drowning
Venice breathing, shiny shoe mirrors of sex and violence,
In the purple evening silence, venice dreaming of a partner.
Fill your arms with breasts of marble, from the cradle to the table
Coax this naked treasure, from your saviour.
Come swim into my love
Come swim into my life
Divine blasphemer tempting, holly beads of jism
With a scarlet catechism, her lips will answer
(ah, her lips will answer)
How to be, the perfect stranger, the perfect lover - wanting
And as youll discover - giving, and as youll discover - being.
Come swim into my love
Come swim into my life
Enter this sublime corrosion
Venice drowning in emotion
-
(the body stirs, and is reanimated, only briefly,
But then life is very brief)
(come swim into my life)
(come swim into my life)
(ah-ahh ah-ah ah-ah-whoo heyyey)
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning!.... (slowly disappearing..)

Found myself, found myself
Oh, in a restaurant in venice
Found myself

I was talkin to my baby
In a restaurant down in venice
When I found myself
Down in venice
And Im cryin
But my tears, but my tears
Are filled with joy
And Im walkin in venice
And Im cryin
Chorus:
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
Dum derra dum dum diddy diddy dah dah
As Im leaving venice, as Im leaving venice
As Im leaving venice
All the streets are wet with rain
And in my memory, and in my memory
And in my memory
I remember it well
And I take a stroll
Oh, see the ships come sailing in
In the harbor in the harbor
Down in venice
And Im cryin
But my tears, but my tears
Are filled with joy
And Im walkin in venice
And Im cryin
Repeat chorus
Walkin in venice and Im cryin
Oh, as Im walkin in venice, walkin in venice
And Im cryin
Well, Im walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk walk, walk
Walkin in venice
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Well, I walk and I walk and I walk and I walk
Well, Im walkin in venice
I walk and I walk and I walk
And I feel you and I see you as Im walkin
Down in venice
Now sing a song, goes like this:
Repeat chorus & fade

First Encounter - Imamura Shohei
Imamura Shohei
that love of the orient
shines through his face
Imamura Shohei
our meet marked by
mutual love for the orient
The late Imamura Shohei won the Grand Prix Award for the Cannes Film Festival for the film Narayama Bushiko many years back. The film depicts the strange custom of a Japanese village where old folks were
sent to mountains to die to solve food problems. The most touching scene was that of an old woman waving to her reluctant son to go after he had brought her to the mountains. Imamura was in Malacca in the 80s to film his other film Zegen when we met up. He greeted me like a friend, an outpouring of his love for the orient. Zegen did not make it to the box office but his recognition as one of Japan best directors surivives.

In starting to learn about film festivals and what were good ones - 'cause there are five billion of them - it was just a really good East Coast festival. And I thought this little movie was an East Coast film.

I think that comedy really tells you how it is. The other thing about comedy is that - you don't even know if you're failing in drama, but you do know when you're failing in comedy. When you go to a comedy and you don't hear anybody laughing, you know that you've failed.
