Marguerite Yourcenar

A young musician plays scales in his room and only bores his family. A beginning writer, on the other hand, sometimes has the misfortune of getting into print.

Well I'm a third-generation musician. My Grandfather's a musician and my father and mother were both musicians and so I'm a musician. It was just natural that I should be a musician 'cause I was born into the family.

Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Musician

I went to a concert, to see nina, simone,
The concert was over, there was still a band playing, the rap up,
The booguh played with his hands, I close my eyes, and look at him,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
I said to myself, victor should have been a jazz musician,
I looked at his face, and I saw victor, looked at his smile, and I saw victor,
I looked at his hair, and thought,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
And the people dancing on the floor, dancing on the floor, were so high,
You should have seen victor smile, you should have seen victor smile,
As they danced all the while all around on the floor, and he laughed,
Victor should have been a jazz musician,
Oh, victor should have been a jazz musician,
He was playing so nice, the jazz musician,
Ah, ah,
Hes living in a fast beat, in a city thats hot,
Telling all the latinos and puerto ricans, victor seems happy, but he doesnt even know himself, hes gotta look inside to know his first love,
Victor was a jazz musician, he was playing so nice, victor was a jazz musician, (? ) victor was a jazz musician,
Victor loves his music, he loves his music, somewhere, he plays his music, somewhere,
Victor is a jazz musician,
Jazz.

Paperback Writer

(LennonMcCartney)
Paperback writer
Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
Paperback writer
It's a thousand pages, give or take a few
I'll be writing more in a week or two
I can make it longer if you like the style
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
Paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer

Studio Musician

I am a studio musician
We've never met
But you know me well
I am the English horn
Who plays the poignant counter-nine
Upon the song you heard
While making love in some hotel
I am a part of you
I've never tried for fame
You'll never know my name
I am the strings that enter softly
Or three guitars that glitter gold
I am the thousand trumpet lines
That were an afterthought
Intended eyes,
the way to get a dying record sold
I never ride the road
I never play around
I played what they set down
I'm a working musician
living from week to week
I'm the voice through each empty men
tried to speak
A studio musician
Blowin' the chance I see
And when the woodwind coushin rises
I start to dream
With the low brass bed
But I awake the horns
The drummer calls to me
We're up the letter D
I'm a man of the moment
pop is my stock n' trade
Singles, jingles and demos
conventently made
A studio musician
Whose music will die unplayed
A studio musician
Whose music could have died unplayed

Family Gatherings

Meeting at my Grandma's house at noon
Its the same thing everytime
Kids get in line to eat before anyone else
the kids sit at a separate table than the adults
After lunch everyone goes outside and plays something
If not outside then everyone sits in the family room
Conversations about anything and everything go on
This tradition makes my family what it is
Everyone cares about everyone and we would not trade these lunches for anything
Tradition is what my family is about.

Session Man

He never will forget at all
The day he played at the albert hall.
A million sessions ago it seems.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Rock n roll or vocal star[? ],
A philharmonic orchestra,
Everything comes the same to him.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Hes not paid to think, just play,
A session man
A session man
A session man
Playing at a different studio every day.
He reads the dots and plays each line,
And always finishes on time.
No overtime nor favors done.
He is a session man,
A chord progression,
A top musician.
Hes not paid to think, just play,
A session man
A session man
A session man

Music is emotional, and you may catch a musician in a very unemotional mood or you may not be in the same frame of mind as the musician. So a critic will often say a musician is slipping.

My job as a musician is very different from that of a prose writer - which I don't ever see myself being - because my job is to miniaturize. I take a big subject like love and make it small, where a writer takes a small subject and must make it bigger.

Alone isn't forever

Once upon a time.

There was girl all alone.

She ordered everything by phone.

All of her potted rose bushes stood in a perfect line.

In the middle of her living room grew a big fury pine.

She trembled everytime she opened the door.

She was not scared to be poor.

She was a writer afraid to explore.

Her books and keyboard were an escape.

Even so the stars still reminded her of hope.

Her books look like wall paper that surounded the room.

The dust has no time to scatter any gloom.

All the windows show off the sun light.

The candle is only used at night.

She typed at the keys until her hands went numb.

She could not write a single line.

A larger fear was beginning to form in her mind.

Her work without experience was blind.

She decided the voice of fear was dumb.

Small steps took her out to the mail box.

Out of the forest peered glowing eyes which made her scream.

Her fear went away after seeing it was just a fox.

Another day brought an email from a friend.

His family needed help on the Island.

A big storm blew their house away.

She bought a ticket and sailed on that day.

She helped them build a Victorian house yay.

She is becoming an amazing writer.

She is now able to brave any adventure.

The end.

So Satisfying

The musician struggles with a tune all night
and tries to keep it near.
Sometimes it slips right through the ear.
At times it's gone I fear.

A cursed blankness creates a loss
and in the morn you sigh.
'Should the theme have ended low
or have taken the notes up high?

That tune is gone but the quest goes on
and the music comes alive.
A theme is finally completed
and so you let it survive.

Over and over it plays in the head
and will not be subdued.
To the musician that wrestled with the notes
the completion is just like food.
So satisfying.

Music

The neighbour sits in his window and plays the flute.
From my bed I can hear him,
And the round notes flutter and tap about the room,
And hit against each other,
Blurring to unexpected chords.
It is very beautiful,
With the little flute-notes all about me,
In the darkness.

In the daytime,
The neighbour eats bread and onions with one hand
And copies music with the other.
He is fat and has a bald head,
So I do not look at him,
But run quickly past his window.
There is always the sky to look at,
Or the water in the well!

But when night comes and he plays his flute,
I think of him as a young man,
With gold seals hanging from his watch,
And a blue coat with silver buttons.
As I lie in my bed
The flute-notes push against my ears and lips,
And I go to sleep, dreaming.

I learned that the only way you are going to get anywhere in life is to work hard at it. Whether you're a musician, a writer, an athlete or a businessman, there is no getting around it. If you do, you'll win - if you don't, you won't.
