Longer Happiness
Be a writer or a poet.
Be a singer or a musician.
You will have spent longer
In happiness than others.

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer
It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few
I'll be writing more in a week or two
I can make it longer if you like the style
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer

If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer

I Am More A Poet
I AM MORE A POET THAN ANY OTHER KIND OF WRITER
I am more a poet than any other kind of writer-
But I am not a pure poet -
And not the best of what a poet could be-
I 'think' in my poetry
And it tells me what I dream and feel-
It is my soul-
God made me a poet
Perhaps not a good one as I would have liked to be-
It is so wonderful to be able to write these lines now
After long long hours of difficult silence.

The Poet Who No Longer Believes In Himself
THE POET WHO NO LONGER BELIEVES IN HIMSELF
The poet who no longer believes in himself
And writes on anyway-
The poet who is too weak to stop writing-
The poet who has died as a poet,
Before he has as a person-
The poet who may never have lived as a poet-
The old old old schnook,
Still trying to write a poem
And believing he has done it once again.

Artie is a singer, and I'm a writer and player and a singer. We didn't work together on a creative level and prepare the songs. I did that.

Well I'm a third-generation musician. My Grandfather's a musician and my father and mother were both musicians and so I'm a musician. It was just natural that I should be a musician 'cause I was born into the family.

The Painter
Painter
Come colour up my life
Oh painter
Come colour up my life
Take away the misery
Take away the strife
Writer
Make me up a play
Writer
Make the meaning gay
[for I dont know who I am]
Just give me words to say
Singer
Let me sing a song

You dont have to worry
Cause singer you can sing along

This Writer This Poet- Perhaps
THIS WRITER, THIS POET, PERHAPS
This Writer, this Poet, Perhaps
Who lived with some sense of Life
Greater than Life-
Some Love greater than Love
Some Goodness and Blessing
Greater than Goodness and Blessing
Which somehow must be found and made
Within the Self
And yet enhance the world
Beyond the bounds
Of what it had seen and known before.
This Writer, this Poet- perhaps.

you are the songwriter
I am invisible poet

you are the singer
I am the poet missing
part of your soul
the tragedy of missing parts
usually missing parts stay missing
lost incomplete never merging solo mystic

Singer Of Blues...writer Of Prose
A good poet can be likened
to an old blues singer
You’ve got to have experienced life
in all it’s rainbow variations
You’ve got to have the scars
From life’s long, hard winter
You’ve got to show the lines…
The creases and striations
Songs torn from life
With gut-wrenching intensity
Words expressed on small black keyboard
Marine band harmonica expressing emotions
A plaintive E-chord…long ebony fingers
Sorrow…sadness…smallness…immensity
Memories addressed, then electronically stored
While back porch steps record…only evanescent devotions
Singer of blues…purveyor of prose
Both rent ragged, both experience-rich
Both life -haggard, …with hopes and woes
Blues singer, prose writer…same niche

I consider myself a poet first and a musician second. I live like a poet and I'll die like a poet.

You can't stay the same. If you're a musician and a singer, you have to change, that's the way it works.

All These Things
Sometimes I don’t feel who I am.
I don’t feel like what I write
because I don’t want to be pigeonholed
for just one thing I do.
I think myself as a whole
and not just one object.
I call myself a writer,
not a poet,
not a novelist,
neither a songwriter
nor a short story writer be.
I am a writer
because all those things
emulate from within me.

Before a Poetry Reading
'Poet! Poet! Poet! Poet! '
I'm feeling nervous but I mustn't show it!
'Poet! Poet! Poet! Poet! '
I hope to heaven that I won't blow it!
'Poet! Poet! Poet! Poet! '
I mustn't reveal that I'm a second-rate poet!
I'm only a rhymer, but they don't know it!
If you've got no talent you'll have to grow it!
'Poet! Poet! Poet! Poet! '

A Poet Of Our Time
He doesn't like non rhyming poetry ignore what he has to say
About your fashionable writing you are the poet of the day
Your thoughts on paper are as deep as the ocean you are a wise one indeed
You are an emerging writer as a poet you will succeed
Everyone has their opinions no two exactly the same
He doesn't like modern poetry but he has not sullied your name
It only means you are a good writer when others your works criticize
You are a poet of the future you've won a literary prize
At poetry nights you read your verses and always for you there's an encore
You feel so proud and so happy when the audience they beg you for more
People love you for your poetry see you as a poetic great
But not everyone as you know your success will celebrate
He is a man of the fifties he only likes poems that rhyme
So many do love your poetry you are a poet of our time.

Music is emotional, and you may catch a musician in a very unemotional mood or you may not be in the same frame of mind as the musician. So a critic will often say a musician is slipping.

My job as a musician is very different from that of a prose writer - which I don't ever see myself being - because my job is to miniaturize. I take a big subject like love and make it small, where a writer takes a small subject and must make it bigger.
My father was a classical musician and my mother was a writer.
