I was away from the front lines for a while this spring, living with other troops, and considerable fighting took place while I was gone. When I got ready to return to my old friends at the front I wondered if I would sense any change in them.

Soldier's Heart
All hope was gone
Hard to hang on
Hard to be strong
Was blind, could not see
Nothing but walls in front of me and inside no peace
And the mountains seemed impossible to climb until...
[Chorus]
You stood on the front lines
You led the way, out of the darkness
We didn't go astray
You were ready to die for our sake
And that takes a soldier's heart
Oceans so deep
Uphill so steep
But still we believe
And when the road was too far to travel
Heros you cared you came and carried us there
And the mountains seemed impossible to climb until...
[Chorus]
You stood on the front lines
You led the way, out of the darkness
We didn't go astray
You were ready to die for our sake
And that takes a soldier's heart
And so our flag was still there
All because you decided to care
[Chorus x2]
You stood on the front lines
You led the way, out of the darkness
We didn't go astray
You were ready to die for our sake
And that takes a soldier's heart
You stood on the front lines
You led the way, out of the darkness
You could have let us go astray
You were ready to die for our sake
And that takes a soldier's heart
And that takes a soldier's heart

In Front Of Me
It's hard to breathe, from underneath
Smothering in all your heat
It's hard to take, It's tough to break
So I don't make the same mistakes
The same mistake, (4x)
Out in the yard is where I play,
Don't come in cause I'm afraid
You saw my face, I faced my friends
Do I tell or just pretend?
I found a friend, a friend who knows
Who says he'll help but then he goes
And then he goes (4x)
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
Fingernails, filled with dirt
If you don't tell, you don't get hurt
I cry for help, I pray to God
Another tear he tries to rob
To rob me of, my dignity
Cause sanctuary's far from me
Far from me (4x)
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
It's hard to take, a piece of me, so peacefully, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
So broke inside, don't run away
And find another place to stay
And make our inhibition go away
Because I'm so afraid, yeah, yeah
It's hard to breathe, from underneath
Smothering in all your heat
It's hard to take, It's tough to break
So I don't make the same mistakes
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah
I'm in the way, the way it goes, so go away, yeah, yeah
It's hard to take, a piece of me, so peacefully, yeah, yeah
In front of me, In front of me, so far from me, yeah, yeah

Right in Front of the Army
"Where 'ave you been this week or more,
'Aven't seen you about the war'?
Thought perhaps you was at the rear
Guarding the waggons." "What, us? No fear!
Where have we been? Why, bless my heart,
Where have we been since the bloomin' start?
Right in the front of the army,
Battling day and night!
Right in the front of the army
Teaching 'em how to fight!"
Every separate man you see,
Sapper, gunner, and C.I.V.,
Every one of 'em seems to be
Right in front of the army!
Most of the troops to the camp had gone,
When we met with a cow-gun toiling on;
And we said to the boys, as they walked her past,
"Well, thank goodness, you're here at last!"
"Here at last! Why, what d'yer mean?
Ain't we just where we've always been?
Right in the front of the army,
Battling day and night!
Right in the front of the army,
Teaching'em bow to fight!"
Correspondents and Vets in force,
Mounted foot and dismounted horse,
All of them were, as a matter of course,
Right in the front of the army.
Old Lord Roberts will have to mind
If ever the enemy get behind;
For they'll smash him up with a rear attack,
Because his army has got no back!
Think of the horrors that might befall
An army without any rear at all!
Right in the front of the army,
Battling day and night!
Right in the front of the army,
Teaching 'em how to fight!
Swede attaches and German counts,
Yeomen (known as De Wet's Remounts),
All of them were, by their own accounts,
Right in the front of the army!

Nothing good ever lasts...
To be able to remain just still and enjoy beauty without trying to edit it or change it; reveals the world's true beauty. I remember walking quietly once, one very hot spring morning by the railway through the wild orchards in Dogwoods, Knutsford. Resting there on a storm drain-grid, I was just catching my breath when minutes later. I saw a baby rabbit poke its head out of a rabbit hole in the brambles it was 2ft in front of me. It was then he or she was pushed outside by their sisters or brothers.
They rolled around in front me and were toy fighting till the 11.20am Chester train went on by,
The only pity for me was the train was on time, came by so fast… nothing good ever lasts.

Out Of My Head (live)
What is wrong with all my friends
I know that I am unlike them
just another situation
dont hold me back
I dont look good to them
they always act so dirty
they keep themselves so clean
why cant they find the answers to
the questions that are right in front of me
Im so high, Im never low
Ill hold the sky, never letting go
let it go
no one's ever listening
the lines are crossed somewhere between
my head is spinning like a top
I dont know when this ____ is gonna to stop
they always act so dirty
they keep themselves so clean
why cant they find the answers to
the questions that are right in front of me
Im so high, Im never low
Ill hold the sky, never letting go
you fill my cup, Im good to go
so shake me up, I'm ready to roll
roll...roll...(I'll never let you)go...go
what is wrong with all my friends
I know that I am unlike them they
hold me back, they never will
I'm telling you these people are not my friends
Im so high, Im never low
Ill hold the sky, and Im never letting go
you fill my cup, I'm good to go
so shake me up, I'm ready to roll
I'm never letting go
I'm never letting go

This Uncivil War
This uncivil war
(gretchen peters)
Theres a silence on the front lines
You can cut it with a knife
You can stay and take your changes
Or you can run to save your life
And one side is retreating
And the others runnin scared
And the drums of war are beating
Even through its undeclared
And both sides say theyre winning
And both sides know theyre losing
And neither one knows what theyre fighting for
And in the quiet little places
You can see the little faces
Huddled right outside the bedroom door
Praying for an end to this uncivil war
Papa needs a new job
So hes swallowing his pride
Oh, but it dont go down easy
And it eats him up inside
And mama, she dont notice
Little sisters ragged dress
Lately she dont notice
Much of anything
I guess
Theyre just fightin off the hunger
Tryin to keep from goin under
But the wolves just keep on
Gatherin round the door
Theres no place to run for cover
So theyre turning on each other
Cause there really aint no winners anymore
Just victims of this uncivil war
Theres a silence on the front lines
You can cut it with a knife
You can stay and take your chances
Or you can run to save your life

Up Front
(r. parker, jr.)
I wanna get it straight up front
Lets tell each other what we want
So we can both decide up front
If we like it or we dont
Just as long as Im single
Im gonna do what the heck I please
And I dnt feel its fair
For you to be restricting me
If you want a serious commitment
You gotta first make one yourself
If you want it one sided
Youd netter find somebody else
I wanna get it straight up front
Lets tell each other what we want
So we can both decide up front
If we like it or we dont
Now Ive been in relatioships
Where Ive given all of myself
I did everything for him
He did everyrthing for someone else
Now dont musuderstand me
Im not prejudging you
But if you plan to fool around
Let me know so I can do it too
I wanna get it straight up front
Lets tell each other what we want
So we can both decide up front
If we like it or we dont
Now I know everything cant be predicted
Because love dont work that way
But we can at least agree on the rules
Before we start to play
I wanna get it straight up front
Lets tell each other what we want
So we can both decide up front
If we like it or we dont

Patience
Pick it up.
Read it.
Put it down.
Leave it.
Return in a few years.
Pick it up again.
Doesn't it seem to make sense now?
I knew it would.
All you needed was to allow yourself patience.
For some folks this takes a little bit longer,
Than for others.
But at least you are now comprehending...
Right?
That's all that matters.
Now...
It's okay,
To place your left foot...
In front of the right one!

Prosody 101
When they taught me that what mattered most
was not the strict iambic line goose-stepping
over the page but the variations
in that line and the tension produced
on the ear by the surprise of difference,
I understood yet didn't understand
exactly, until just now, years later
in spring, with the trees already lacy
and camellias blowsy with middle age,
I looked out and saw what a cold front had done
to the garden, sweeping in like common language,
unexpected in the sensuous
extravagance of a Maryland spring.
There was a dark edge around each flower
as if it had been outlined in ink
instead of frost, and the tension I felt
between the expected and actual
was like that time I came to you, ready
to say goodbye for good, for you had been
a cold front yourself lately, and as I walked in
you laughed and lifted me up in your arms
as if I too were lacy with spring
instead of middle aged like the camellias,
and I thought: so this is Poetry!

Down the seafront tonight - Pinewood Royal
Tall ships in the harbour
Waiting for a sailing far away
Stones across the water
Herring gulls drifting across the bay
Painted lady in the garden
The Blackcap sings from early dawn
The warm air slumbers
Soothing the Trevello Lawn
On the red cliffs of The Berry
The lighthouse shines till early dawn
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down to where the lights, the lights are shining bright
On the sea front you can see the rows of coloured lights
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
Just you and I
The bright lights sparkle
On the sea front walking by
The ice cream parlour
Fairground rides and coconut shy
Ocean going liners
Cabin lights blazing wave goodbye
White horses in the moonlight
Constellations across the sky
Red glow from leaded windows
A summer's evening in July
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down to where the lights, the lights are shining bright
On the sea front you can see the rows of coloured lights
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
We're going down
Down to the sea front tonight
Just you and I

Return To Silence
Return to silence
We need no violence
Fighting for freedom in a restless world
We are praying for peace
Without pain and disease
Heal the world and close your eyes
Return to silence
Return to silence
We need no violence
Fighting for freedom
Return to silence
Praying for peace
Pain and disease
Where is a real paradise
Where is the land without lies
We just have to find a better way
The loss of heaven is the price we pay
No more nightmares each and every day
We don't need any wars
People wanna change course
They want the union of love
Where's a heavenly place
For the whole human race
Without weapons and wars
Every being on earth, needs a dream in his soul
We need our freedom, let loose of control
The older we get the less we see our way
We think of the past, but now we are trapped
And if I want to know why, we are trying to deny
The loss of heaven's road, is the price we have to pay
Stop violence, let's come to one's sense
Return to innocence
Somewhere inside, we still feel to be a child
Where the eyes are big and the problems being mild
If we try to go against, the current of events
Sometimes we gonna loose but we have to take the chance
Always have in mind, things should change in peace
Searching for someone to help, the sad and lonely trough
It can be me or you, so what we gonna do
I have a clue, for me and for you

To be a super power
Who fears you in front
Will hate you behind.
Who praises you in front
Will abuse you behind.
Who pleases you in front
Will avoid you behind.
Why should you strive hard
To become a man of power?

At The Front Row
What is after the sixth number
Surpasses the seventh number
He who must lick the honey in the rock
Must care less on the fate of the axe
Many request to be made kings
They like the garments of kings
They want to be called his majesty
But the clout to serve is not in them
Many wants the crowns on their heads
Yet they detest the process of making the crown
Many never realised the crown is heavy
He who must wear the beaded cap
Must be skilful in in serving
Although the front row looks sweet
The front row may be tempting
He who must lead
Must be ready to forgo all
There must be no veil
The front row is without facade

I was always playing the Hammond Organ back to front even during the days of the Nice, going back to 1968. Really what I was doing there, was choosing notes at random and trying to make some sense of them, improvising back to front.

Walking On A Thin Line
Sometimes in my bed at night
I curse the dark and a pray for light
And sometimes, the lights no consolation
Blinded by a memory
Afraid of what it might do to me
And the tears and the sweat only mock my desperation
Dont you know me Im the boy next door
The one you find so easy to ignore
Is that what I was fighting for?
Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Labeled as freaks loose on the streets of the city
Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Take a look at my face, see what its doing to me
Taught me how to shoot to kill
A specialist with a deadly skill
A skill I needed to have to be a survivor
Its over now or so they say
Well, sometimes, it dont turn out that way
Cause your never the same when youve been under fire
Dont you know me Im the boy next door
The one you find so easy to ignore
Is that what I was fighting for?
Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Labeled as freaks loose on the streets of the city
Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Take a look at my face, see what its doing to me

A Faux
In front of your eyes,
In front of your lips,
In front of the wilderness!
But roasted in the fire with the flavour of your love;
And what i know about you is what i write about.
Meticulously,
Perpetuity,
Foresightedly,
And like diligent taxpayers! !
But a faux-revolutionary political machine is what you have;
And many have gone hungry in the name of war.

Couldn't See The Wood For The Trees
I now know we're not best friends anymore
Tonight you proved it
Showing your selfish side
Yet again
No room for me
I guess it's time to see
What was right in front of my eyes
The respect you never gave me
The respect you never had
And you never gave it
For far too long
I couldn't give a shit
Best Friends
Yeah?
Do Best Friends
Not know what's legit
And i've lost all sense of feeling
For you
I know with you i'm out of site
Out of mind
An i've lost all sense of feeling
I always knew you we're one of a kind
One of a kind
That i don't want to know anymore

This Is What I See
I land a leap
Quietly, gracefully
I look into the wall-length mirror, to the left
And this is what I see…
The floor springs move beneath me
Someone mounts the highest beam,
ready for anything
Tasha spots my team
And I cheer for my coach
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
Coaches I’ve known since my childhood…
I grew up here
I look into the wall-length mirror, in the center
And this is what I see…
Someone cross-tumbles, adrenaline rushes
As she lands a front handspring
Caitlyn lands a punch front, sticks it
And I cheer for my friend
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
Friends I’ve known since I was three…
I grew up here
I look into the wall-length mirror, to the right
And this is what I see…
Shannon dismounts, back tuck from the uneven bars
And I cheer for my friend
Team girls on the trampoline
Littles in the pit back in the farthest corner
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
People I’ve known since a long time ago…
I grew up at Spirits
Drunken Wedding
Ring the bell, ring the bell
Don’t forget your diamond ring
Cover the bride, tight the groom
It is spring times calling
Hey, just ring the bell please!
If only love can make you drunk
Then drunk with wine and kisses
No wedding without a bit late of madness
You can sing badly in front your guest
You can dance hot in front your family
And nobody care because they busy with the meal
Hold your hand for the night
Enjoy the flower and perfume
Don’t let your smile freeze
And change my honey lips
Let’s done and over it
Cheers!

At The Front Gate (Rondelet)
At the front gate
I saw you smell a new red rose,
at the front gate
this afternoon I could not wait
for you to come, to hold you close,
to you I wanted to propose
at the front gate.
