I made the tenor sax - there's nobody plays like me and I don't play like anybody else.

Some people say there was no jazz tenor before me. All I know is I just had a way of playing and I didn't think in terms of any other instrument but the tenor.

Play makes you a master.

The child plays with blocks.
The adults play with cards.
The poet plays with words.
They enjoy without profit.

Yes, play gives masterly feeling.

The Last Cheaters Waltz

(sonny throckmorton)
She was going to pieces when he walked in the door
She had to see him she cant wait no more
Tonight shell be with him no matter the cost
As the band plays the last cheaters waltz
And oooooooohh dont they play lonely
Oooooooohh dont they play sad
Oooooooohh three quarter only
See how he holds her
As the band plays the last cheaters waltz
He tells her he loves her as the music plays on
He tells he loves her but someones at home
The ball games all over and she knows shes lost
As the band plays the last cheaters waltz
And oooooooohh dont they play lonely
Oooooooohh dont they play sad
Oooooooohh three quarter only
See how he holds her
As the band plays the last cheaters waltz

You got to play the flute as a flute, like that. You can't play like a tenor concept on soprano; it sounds wrong. But some guys do it, and they think it's O.K., but not so!

There's a feeling of enrichment and challenge when it comes to doing a play, and especially doing, you know, a classical play or a tragic play. In a way, it works a different set of muscles, I guess. But I do love it, and I love great writing, whatever it is, and there are so many great plays, and a lot of the writing in a lot of plays is just stellar, and no one is making movies like that, or if they are, I'm certainly not getting cast in them. But you know, working on a comedy with your friends.

Listen To The Band

Hey, hey, mercy woman plays a song and no one listens,
I need help Im falling again.
Play the drum a little louder,
Tell me I can live without her
If I only listen to the band.
Listen to the band!
Werent they good, they made me happy.
I think I can make it alone.
Oh, mercy woman plays a song and no one listens,
I need help Im falling again.
Play the drum a little bit louder,
Tell them they can live without her
If they only listen to the band.
Listen to the band!
Now werent they good, they made me happy.
I think I can make it alone.
Oh, woman plays a song and no one listens,
I need help Im falling again.
Cmon, play the drums just a little bit louder,
Tell us we can live without her
Now that we have listened to the band.
Listen to the band!

Merlin really taught me how to concentrate, that you play each play as if it were the only play. And if you put all the plays together like that, then you'll come out on top.

in God's horizon

after the performance
of the school play
the boy who plays
Prince
and the girl who plays
Cinderilla
all come to Mama and Papa
and they say

'how was it? '

it is like life, in Liao's
divine horizon
when the day is over
no matter how sad and rough
we all run to a set of arms
we are hugged
we are loved.

Peter Gunn's Gun

by Michael Leonard, Bobby Weinstein & Jon Stroll
Throw a penny from the window, watch an old man play a song
On a twenty-dollar violin he bought before the war,
Though he screeches and he scratches and the notes are always wrong,
But he plays like he's in concert on the street outside my door.
Tunes to suit your fancy,
Are there any requests?
I'll play them for a penny,
(Play them penny music, play them for a penny)
And not a penny less.
He's the local virtuoso, it's his only way of life,
Plays ninety-seven overtures and goes home to his wife,
In the quiet of the evening while his frozen fingers bleed,
He counts pennies on a blanket to supply his meager need.
Tunes to suit your fancy,
Are there any requests?
I'll play them for a penny,
(Play them penny music, play them for a penny)
And not a penny less.
When there's frost upon the pumpkin in the weakness of the sun,
People stand there in the cold until his symphony is done,
In the early gray of morning, he's sure to come around,
You can hear him through the window when the pennies hit the ground.
Tunes to suit your fancy,
Are there any requests?
I'll play them for a penny,
(Play them penny music, play them for a penny)
And not a penny less.
They're playing penny music,
Playing penny music,
They're playing penny music,
Playing penny music,
Playing penny music.
fade out...

Someone Else’s Mistake

Why do I feel haunted
by someone else’s mistake?
It happened long before I knew them,
but it plays on my mind
and it makes no sense to me.
I have made enough mistakes of my own.
So why should I be haunted
by one someone else made.
From time to time, I feel a prisoner
from a mistake I never made.
It plays on my mind
for nights and days at a time.
Then it vanishes for months,
but never entirely goes away.
I will see something similar to what happened,
only to have it come back to haunt me
with this mistake someone else made.

0014 Lyric 2

The heart so loves to love,
loves love, beyond the loving all;
The mind so plays, so loves to play,
plays with that greater play
of love, that plays with mind and time;
time plays with love, times out of mind,
but love’s the heart of it;
love loves beyond time, love loves beyond mind,
for in the end,
there is no end to it.

Tenorman

Sweet sad young tenor
Horn slumped around neck
Bearded full of junk
Slouches waiting
For Apocalypse,
Listens to the new
Negro raw trumpet kid
Tell him the wooden news;
And the beat of the bass
The bass—drives in
Drummer drops a bomb
Piano tinkle tackles
Sweet tenor lifting
All American sorrows
Raises mouthpiece to mouth
And blows to finger
The iron sounds

A Slow Song

Music has charms they say
But in some peoples hands
It becomes a savage beast
Cant they control it
Why dont they hold it back
You see my friend and me
Dont have an easy day
And at night we dance not fight
And we need the energy
If not the sympathy
But Im brutalized by bass
And terrorized by treble
Im open to change my mood but
I always get caught in the middle
And I get tired of djs
Whys it always what he plays
Im gonna push right through
Im gonna tell him too
Tell him to
Play us
Play us a slow song
Its late - Im winding down
Am I the only one
To want a strong and silent sound
To pick me up and undress me
Lay me down and caress me
I feel you touch my hand
And whisper in my ear
Ask me how Im feeling now
And I want to get near you
But I cant even hear you
But this is a fine romance
If we have to be so demanding
We need just one more dance to
Leave here with an understanding
And I get tired of djs
Whys it always what he plays
Im gonna push right through
Im gonna tell him too
Tell him to
Play us
Play us a slow song

The Disconcerted Tenor

A tenor, all singers above
(This doesn't admit of a question),
Should keep himself quiet,
Attend to his diet,
And carefully nurse his digestion.
But when he is madly in love,
It's certain to tell on his singing -
You can't do chromatics
With proper emphatics
When anguish your bosom is wringing!
When distracted with worries in plenty,
And his pulse is a hundred and twenty,
And his fluttering bosom the slave of mistrust is,
A tenor can't do himself justice.
Now observe - (SINGS A HIGH NOTE) -
You see, I can't do myself justice!

I could sing, if my fervour were mock,
It's easy enough if you're acting,
But when one's emotion
Is born of devotion,
You mustn't be over-exacting.
One ought to be firm as a rock
To venture a shake in VIBRATO;
When fervour's expected,
Keep cool and collected,
Or never attempt AGITATO.
But, of course, when his tongue is of leather,
And his lips appear pasted together,
And his sensitive palate as dry as a crust is,
A tenor can't do himself justice.
Now observe - (SINGS A CADENCE) -
It's no use - I can't do myself justice!

Song That Jane Likes

And in plays to write the wire in
Ill come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
Ill come back again
Would you like to play
With the thought of a friend
In a distant passing stage
While you lie around
With hands up and down
So resigned you will fall down
While you around here play
Wild on the warm and far away
While you around here play
The days keep scrbbling themselves
In tidy lines
Would like to play
With a fool holding hands
With a one-eyed jack of spades
While on the deck they sing
All of the captains cards are kings
Still he and the queen are lost at sea
I hope it isnt you and me
And Ill be back round again
Yes Ill walk in time with you old friend
And well find that place
That we had danced so long ago
And in plays to write the wire in
Ill come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
Ill come back again
With this resigned
The letter I sign
