Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men.

The Open Road

THE roads of the Sea
Are thronged with merchantmen;
East and West, North and South
They go and come again.

All precious merchandise
They bear in their hold:
Lest the people be starving
In the night and cold.

Now tell me, good merchants,
How this thing can be
That the white ships are thronging
The roads of the sea?

For there's death in the skies
And there's death on the earth;
And men talked of famine
And a frozen hearth.

Yet the ships they go crowding
The roads of the sea;
They bring home their treasures
To you and to me.

O listen, good people,
And hearing, praise God,
That the watch-dogs are keeping
The ships on their road!

They sit watchful and steady
Where the North winds blow;
Sleepless they are keeping
The roads the ships go.

In the day, in the hour,
They will spring--until then,
Their eyes keep the courses
Of the merchantmen.

Forget not, good people,
When ye heap the white board,
When ye draw to the hearth-fire,
To praise the Lord,

That the watch-dogs unsleeping
Keep the roads of the Sea,
Up by the Northern Lights
Where the great ships be.

Marriages are not made in heaven! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

You smile at me gazing deep in my eyes
From the picture I pinned on the soft board.
As I untangle my wet hair and hurriedly blow dry,
Tying into a knot with pins, rush out on road

To catch 9 AM metro after all night work;
It’s Monday, deadline for a cover story
On long distance marriage; board and smirk
You can make it work, with trust, commitment.

Distance - Between

There is a
Distance.

Between,
Mortality and eternity.

Distance.

Between,
God and humanity.

Distance.

Between.
So much,
So far;
The Universe and
The burning stars.

Distance.

Between,
Creator and creation;
Between,
All past and present relation.

Distance.

Between,
All living,
All dying;
Laughing and
Crying.

The distance - between,
The present scene, and
All that is unseen;
What's hiding, and
What's showing;
Where we are, and
Where we are going.

Ships

(ian hunter)
We walked to the sea, just my father and me
And the dogs played around on the sand.
Winter cold cut the air, hanging still everywhere
Dressed in gray did he say hold my hand?
I said loves easier when its far away
We sat and watched the distant lights.
Were two ships that pass in the night
And we smile when we say its alright.
Were still here, its just that were out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night.
Theres a boat on the line where the sea meets the sky.
Theres another that rides far behind.
And it seems you and I are like strangers a wide
Ways apart as we drift on through time.
He said its harder now youre far away
We only read you when you write.
Were two ships that pass in the night
We both smile when we say its alright.
Were still here, oh its just that were out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night.
Were two ships that pass in the night
Were two ships that pass in the night
Were two ships that pass in the night
(repeat and fade)

Distances

distance. space.silence.

what is the distance between
your nose to my eyes?

it is the kiss that seals it.

what is the distance between
our silence for days?

it is the distance of longing.

what is the distance between
these miles and miles of separation?

it is this knowing a little bit of ourselves
that sews the torn pieces of cloth

i keep a little distance
between my heart and my head.

i keep this distance between
you and myself, you know why?

i want to see you more.
The farther you are, the more

i can see you the more you
can see me.

IT is the farthest star
that we long much.

IT is the love that is gone
that we want to recover.

IT is the broken heart that we
want to mend.

It is this certain distance
that makes us more human.

This longing. This pain.

Armada So Vivid

Peculiar instances are gusts offered by schisms,
Fineries, armadas of fineries, and those passengers of the ships.
A sea of tranquil setting obtains the queue so vivid
In the act of satanic worship, after us, and all the people on board.
Embarking on a voyage of discovery, a satanic devil is held
In the confines of the ship, or boat, or armada, or navy.
Peculiar dangers await them, for they
Are in the most evil peril, a word we disguise.
Spices are against the Satan, that it morbidly sends
A disease on board to make mutineers and pirates gasp.
The pirates have seized them enough to cry,
The satanic spy conquered them with treachery.

Half Sleeping Birds II

My riding was on roads' margins;
arcane my path in dusk glory,
Some lost sea gulls knew my story,
peculiar listeners, burgeoned.

My soul's revolt deflects the pain,
was it one spell or more? In sea,
(half sleeping birds on a marquee) ,
conceived the crews and ships - again!

In distance ships that float bitter,
onto their trip of lone sorrows,
I reached the moors in half shadows,
three fates became my life's knitters.

They called reminding of my past,
their spell became a sky's thunder
my life won't be dead torn asunder,
because the ships' floating trip lasts.

My past's a track that draws away,
arcane the spells reversed inside;
did you invite my life to Hades,
and my road race of last Sunday?

Docks

Strolling along
By the teeming docks,
I watch the ships put out.
Black ships that heave and lunge
And move like mastodons
Arising from lethargic sleep.

The fathomed harbor
Calls them not nor dares
Them to a strain of action,
But outward, on and outward,
Sounding low-reverberating calls,
Shaggy in the half-lit distance,
They pass the pointed headland,
View the wide, far-lifting wilderness
And leap with cumulative speed
To test the challenge of the sea.

Plunging,
Doggedly onward plunging,
Into salt and mist and foam and sun.

Grey Lady Of The Sea

(lebon)
Youve whispered out loud
But your breeze doesnt bend
Were lying in the palm of your hand
No land we see, no place to be
The salt of your tears, adds stain to our hearts
Theres no long years can tear us apart
Our futures entwined with your past
Because when we lie awake
Well be thinking of you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Bravado is all but gone
And patience is down
You scared us and youve turned us around
But you wont let us drown
Because when we lie asleep
Well be dreaming of you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
So answer us when we call
And say if you think were old
When life is so short we can stay long
But youll never be alone
Because one day well return
Well be waiting for you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home

Tall Trees

Watch out big ships are waiting
Salt frozen on your cheek
I saw a girl and boy arriving
And a steamer put out to sea
Tall tree
Stand in the distance
Remember
When you were green
Dont wipe
The salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
Sun sleeps on misty morning
Light years from channel three
I feel halfway to zero
Call me a hero I might just agree
Tall tree
Stand in the distance
Remember
When you were green
Dont wipe
The salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
And the roses you grow
Have a powerful scent
Theyll be breaking your heart
By the morning
I feel halway to zero
Call me a hero I might just agree
Tall tree
Stand in the distance
Remember
When you were green
Dont wipe
The salt from your skin
Tall tree
Tall tree
Dont wipe
The salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
Tall tree

Further In The Distance

Your attempt to excuse your actions,
With vacant explanations...
Has aided in the speeding,
Of my forward steps.

And yes...
I can hear your voice.
But further in the distance,
Your voice gets.

I no longer prepare myself,
To have the patience you expect.
Since much of that has already been given.
And I have none left that affords your disrespect.

Further in the distance,
Your voice gets.

Further in the distance,
Your voice gets.

Further,
In the distance...
Your voice,
Gets.

Your voice...
Gets,
Further...
In the distance!

Keeping My Distance

(jimmy davis/tommy burroughs/don smith)
Im keeping my calandar open
Even if it takes me years
til you figure out what your plan is
You figure out all of your fears
I dont wanna know anything about her
Or what you feel like you have to defend
But Ive seen your situation
And the world she keeps you in
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance
And Ill wait until my time is here
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance
And Ill wait until you make it clear
If you dont want to rush it baby
Well then by all means dont
But Im gonna wait for the day when
When you see that its me you want
I can see, I can tell that you need me
You know that I need you too
So why on earth cant you ever let her go
Will you ever try anything new
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance
And Ill wait until my time is here
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance
And Ill wait until you make it clear
Where will you find the strength
I cant hold you against your will
You keep me at arms length
Im reaching out to hold you still, yeah, yeah, yeah
I can see that you need me
You know that I need you too
So why on earth cant you ever let her go
Will you ever try anything new
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance
And Ill wait until my time is here
Im keeping my distance
Im keeping my distance

The Junk and the Dhow

"An Unqualified Pilot"

Once a pair of savages found a stranded tree.
(One-piecee stick -pidgin -- two piecee man.
Straddle-um-paddle-um-push -um off to sea.
That way Foleign Debbil-boat began.)
But before, and before, and ever so long before
Any shape of sailing-craft was known,
The Junk and Dhow had a stern and a bow,
And a mast and a sail of their own--ahoy! alone!
As they crashed across the Oceans on their own!

Once there was a pirate-ship, being blown ashore--
(Plitty soon pilum up, s'posee no can tack..
Seven-piecee stlong man pullum sta'boa'd oar.
That way bling her head alound and sail-o back.)
But before, and before, an ever so long before
Grand Commander Noah took the wheel,
The Junk and the Dhow, though they look like anyhow,
Had rudders reaching deep below their keel--ahoy! akeel!
As they laid the Eastern Seas beneath their keel!

Once there was galliot yawing in a tide.
(Too much foolee side-slip. How can stop?
Man catchee tea box lid--lasha longaside.
That way make her plenty glip and sail first-chop.)
But before and before, and ever so long before
And such contrivances were used,
The whole Confucian sea-board had standardized the lee-board.
And hauled it up or dropped it as they choosed--or chose--or
chused!
According to the weather, when they cruised!

Once there was a caravel in a beam-sea roll--
(Ca'qo shiftee--alla dliftee-no can livee long.
S'posum' nail-o boa'd acloss--makee ploper hol'?
That way ca'qo sittum still, an' ship mo' stlong.)
But before, and before, and ever so long before
Any square-rigged vessel hove in sight,
The Canton deep-sea craft carried bulkheads fore and aft,
And took good care to keep 'em water-tight-atite-atite!
From Amboyna to the Great Australian Bight!

Once there was a sailor-man singing just this way--
(Too muchee yowl-o, sickum best flend!
Singee all-same pullee lope--haul and belay!
Hully up and coilum down an'-- bite off end!)
But before, and before, and ever so long before
Any sort of chanty crossed our lips,
The Junk and the Dhow, though they look like anyhow,
Were the Mother and the Father of all Ships--ahoy!--a'ships
And of half the new inventions in our Ships!
From Tarifa to Formosa in our Ships!
From Socotra to Selankhor of the windlass and the anchor,
And the Navigators Compass in our Ships--ahoy!--our Ships!
(O, hully up and coilum down and--bite--off--end!)

Sonnet to J.L. #1

I wonder why your ships are painted green
While ours are gray? I’ve heard some sailors say
That swift ships, camouflaged, can move unseen
Against the sea. Strange, though, it’s always cold gray
Winter’s sea that we anticipate.
I think perhaps you’re wiser with your green.
It is as though you mean to imitate
The warmer, friendlier seas that lie between
The tropics. I wonder, could it be
Your ships are prayers, . their paint a subtle way
To challenge God to grant a happier sea
Than we’d expect in our dour ships of gray?
If so, I pray that God hears your green prayer
And sends you always green seas, calm and fair.

To show love, he keeps a distance

after all the devotion
you seem so far
so far that it makes me
wonder whether
you are really there

now i know
the distance you throw
is for me fill up
to reflect on myself
each thought and act

that this distance
is woven for us
to be close

that you do not want
me to lose sight of myself

the distance keeps us
so close - closer than
there is no distance

a path where
i could run to you
without the echo of guilt
about my love - for you

What says the sea, little shell

"What says the sea, little shell?
What says the sea?
Long has our brother been silent to us,
Kept his message for the ships,
Awkward ships, stupid ships."

"The sea bids you mourn, O Pines,
Sing low in the moonlight.
He sends tale of the land of doom,
Of place where endless falls
A rain of women's tears,
And men in grey robes --
Men in grey robes --
Chant the unknown pain."

"What says the sea, little shell?
What says the sea?
Long has our brother been silent to us,
Kept his message for the ships,
Puny ships, silly ships."

"The sea bids you teach, O Pines,
Sing low in the moonlight;
Teach the gold of patience,
Cry gospel of gentle hands,
Cry a brotherhood of hearts.
The sea bids you teach, O Pines."

"And where is the reward, little shell?
What says the sea?
Long has our brother been silent to us,
Kept his message for the ships,
Puny ships, silly ships."

No word says the sea.
Long will your brother be silent to you,

From A Distance

(alan jackson/randy travis)
Just another bar
With loud guitars
Smoke and candles burning low
And the same ol boys
Their backs to the bar
Staring across a crowded floor
Then I hear a familiar sound
Your voice laughing out loud
From a distance I can see you
Dancing slowly with somebody new
But I cant hold you like I want to
But I can love you from a distance
So I take a chair
In a corner somewhere
You cant see me
But I can look at you
And I remember those times
When I looked in your eyes
The way that he now looks at you
Deep down I know its over
But it hurts me when hes so much closer
From a distance I can see you
Dancing slowly with somebody new
But I cant hold you like I want to
But I can love you from a distance
And if I cant hold you near me
Ill just hold onto your memory
From a distance I can see you
Dancing slowly with somebody new
But I cant hold you like I want to
But I can love you from a distance
Ill always love you from a distance
