I don't work from drawings. I don't make sketches and drawings and color sketches into a final painting.

Those early sketches looked too cartoony; I really wanted to do detailed drawings - I was taking anatomy classes - but unfortunately I wasn't able to do it because of the time element.

Answer me, please Lord...! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Do You like a potter,
Sit down with clay
And give things shape…
Do You like a painter,
Mix colours in a pallette to paint
Such beautiful landscapes…
Do You like an engineer,
Make blue prints and calculations,
Before carrying out Your vision…
Do you like an architect,
Make drawings and rough sketches,
Before staring a project…
Are these childish questions?
Am overcome with wonder,
As I look at Your creation…
Tell me, tell me, and tell me
It's not true; all I see is
Simply an illusion…

Sketches Of Pain
Daylight Saved
Daylight Saved
To spite the dark
In spite of the darkness
There I'll crave
There I'll crave
To get to the heart
In spite of the darkness
Great wide stretches of canvas
Signed by a godless name
Strange bright colours of madness
Only a fool would frame
Sketches of Pain
Sketches of Pain
Sketches of Pain
Some cry shame
Some cry shame
We tore them apart
We failed to imagine
God might claim
God might claim
The works of art
We failed to imagine
Great wide stretches of canvas
Signed by a godless name
Strange bright colours of madness
Only a fool would frame

I carry a notebook full of sketches of pictures I want to take - they are really scruffy sketches, but at least I am going out there with a clear objective.

I have made it a rule for a long time, not to part with the copyright of my drawings, for I have been so copied, my drawings reproduced and sold for advertisements and done in ways I hate.

I don't believe in making pencil sketches and then painting landscape in your studio. You must be right under the sky.

Turning one's novel into a movie script is rather like making a series of sketches for a painting that has long ago been finished and framed.

Depicted Horrific Events
In the movie about
'Picasso's Guernica Painting
Under Microscope'
did you guess
where I was
in the sketches?
What part I played
in depicted horrific events
during the painting?
The enormity
significance of my
symbolic part?
You guessed?
YES no...
when I took flight?
I was the 'fly'
ambitions obvious
'off (the) wall's
Lord of the Flies
YES YES YES
buzzing mythic bodies

During the winter when the weather is too poor to work outside, I do use drawings and photographs, but I change my work so it is not just a time and place study.
Drawings help people to work out intricate relationships between parts.

We tell them that we believe it will be beautiful because that is our specialty, we only create joy and beauty. We have never done a sad work. Through the drawings, we hope a majority will be able to visualize it.
My work is so unorthodox that from one panel to the next, the drawings are completely different... totally opposed to the way of working in something like animation, where every drawing has to look like the one before.

The thing that makes me happiest about Simpsons Illustrated are all the drawings that we get from readers. I wish we could print them all. They're really imaginative. They show a lot of hard work.

Mean Erotic Poems
as i arrive you go away
in an instant
saying bye
i got to go, i have a date on the island
somewhere
distant, so distant from you
you left a note telling me my erotic poems
are mean
and not exciting and not turning you on
like a woman should be
reading about sex, sympathy, some tea and company
some smoke
making love to the red curtains
some hard liquor
to make your breast stiff
and
a fighter, like the way how hard i turn on
you
and like the way my hands go wild and smash
the softness of your thoughts
you leave and heave an ending sigh
your signature
of
i hate you, i hate you, i hate you
perhaps even promising not to read
any poem
of mine anymore, anywhere, anytime
i understand,
the poems are mean, they are not meant for you
they long for someone
somewhere and her name lingers still
in my arm like a rose tattoo
there is a thorn there
always and some drops of blood
dried
now, more like some drawings, mere drawings of my youth

Expression
Back in the sixties we used to indulge
in letting our toddler play in the lounge.
When he did drawings over our walls
we gave him free reign, hey man it's all cool.
As he went on to pursue this art form
we both encouraged, we thought it top draw
After all, in due course it would all have to end
so we thought, as he went on enjoying this bent.
But when he was ten, he persisted to scrawl
over our armchairs, the tables and floors,
and on reaching sixteen, yes, all to our cost
he still persevered in his drawings - a lot.
Now he has grown, he lives on his own
and expresses himself in his own little home.
He paints and he writes on the ceilings and walls
he'll let the phone ring, he's not in to take calls.
He doesn't seem bothered of what people think
although when they visit they tut and they blink.
He's expressing himself and it makes him feel good,
he's not really bad, he's just misunderstood.

On The Shore
One child on the shore
With a stick on his hands
Writes on the sands
Some drawings
Playful
A wave comes and slides
On the shore
The drawings are gone
And a new slate is given
By the water that runs
That advances to him
And later surrenders to itself
Another young man
Draws a heart on the sand
Swearing a love eternal
All encompassing
A wave slides forth
And comes back pulling towards itself
A new slate is made again
The old man comes later
Writing his life story with a cane
The same wave comes again
Slides forth and pulls itself
An empty slate
Sand so smooth and blank and plain
Gleaming anew
To the blue skies
Everything looks playful,
Indeed. The sameness and the
Constant repetition. The cycle.
The monotony of life.

Painting The Walls
painting the walls,
rolling over handprints,
cobwebs, and smoke stains....
over splashes of color,
over peels of time.
painting over the sounds
of voices whispering, laughing....
painting over tears hidden
from the world, from each other.
painting over running, and working,
working all day and half the night.
painting over children, and dreams,
folded like old clothes, and put away.
painting over notes from God,
that were often barely noticed...
painting over the nail that held
up the clock, hands moving slowly,
turning the seasons of living....
painting over the final words,
the last breath held in the hands,
of lives written in the grain....
the testimony of each feeling....
painting the walls,
and brushing the corners,
as if we never lived!

Attic
Its just an old moldy attic.
You'll not see anything crazy or dramatic.
Its all just a real mess.
Take it from me its all just a bunch of stress.
I have to clean it from bottom to top.
Everytime I look around me the work is just begging me to stop.
Its hard trying to decide what has to be given away.
Everything just disappears any way.
Box after box and I still did not find my drawings all day.
But the drawings are not created only to be sold.
