My mother-in-law was with me during all four of my births and when she was sitting next to me holding my hand during the cesareans, well, I craved that.

The Girl Who Held Your Hand
You got on the coach
for the day trip
organized by the chapel people
for kids who were poor
and this girl
sat next to you
and said
you can be my boyfriend
for the day
and she took hold
of your hand
and gave it a squeeze
and you looked out
of the window
at your mother
standing there
looking up at the coach
and you thought
is this part of the deal?
Is this girl for real?
And Mother waved
and smiled
and you smiled
uneasily back
with the girl’s hand
holding yours
out of sight
and she looked
over your shoulder
and waved
but no one
waved back to her
because her mother
wasn’t there
maybe she was off somewhere
or had to go to work
or maybe
she was still in bed
with another uncle
beneath the sheets
and maybe
he was holding her hand
and she was holding
something you never knew
or cared about
just sitting there
waving to Mother
beneath a sky of blue.

Beach Chairs
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching the setting sun
holding hands and reminiscing
how it all begun
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching the ships out on the sea
holding hands and smiling
together we're meant to be
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching people walking past
holding hands and knowing
that our love will always last
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching the waves along the shore
holding hands we realize
our love is stronger than before
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching the changing tide
holding hands with happiness
to be by each others side
Sitting on the beach chairs
watching the sunrise
holding hands with tears of joy
there are no more good-byes

Ice Cold Sweet Tea
vs.1 As I sit on the bench beside our tree,
I can't help but think about you and me.
As the wind picks up and blows my hair,
I can't help but wish that you were there
~Holding my hand, holding me close,
Telling me I'm what you love the most~
(chorus)
But now I'm sitting by myself,
Trying not to cry,
No one else could cheer me up,
No matter how hard they try.
I've lost you to someone else,
And my heart is on my sleeve.
If there's one thing I miss the most,
It's our ice cold sweet tea.
vs.2 Even though it's hard on my heart,
To think about what you did to tear me apart,
I don't regret the feelings I had for you,
But I wish that I could forget those, too.
~Holding my hand, holding me close,
Telling me I'm what you love the most~
(chorus)
(instrumental)
vs.3 I sat on our bench everyday,
My best guy friend came to say
'I don't know why you do this but I understand.
However, I should tell you-' and he took my hand,
and said, 'I wanna hold your hand, I wanna hold you close,
I wanna give you forever 'cause you're what I love the most! '
(chorus 2)
So now I'm sitting on his lap,
With his arms holding me close,
He's the one who cheered me up,
When I thought there was no one else.
I've gained the best thing ever,
And although it's hard to believe,
I have somebody better,
And we have better ice cold sweet tea.
Yeah, there's no one else better but him
For drinkin' ice cold sweet tea :)

And With This Thirsting Craved
With a thirsting craved.
And a hunger of desire...
They believed,
In achieving.
And needed this done...
To satisfy,
What they felt inside.
With a discipline uncommon,
They met and rid themselves...
Of obstacles.
And affirmed success,
Would be theirs!
Or they would not rest.
With this thirsting craved.
And with this thirsting craved,
Everyday there were dues to pay.
And naysayers with nothing positive to say...
But would not get in the way of those who craved.
Those who stayed focused night and day, praying!
Until nothing but Sun would beam from their faces!

Washing Windows
Your mother used to sit on the window
Ledge of the tenement building and
Wash the windows of each of the rooms.
She’d push back the shutters and just
Sit there with a bucket of warm water
And a cloth and wash away. You were
Always afraid she’d lean too far back
And fall out and down to the ground
Several storeys below with a heavy crash
And break bones or neck or maybe die.
But she’d just sit there her legs holding
Onto the wall beneath her and push her
Right hand holding the damp cloth
Over the glass while her left hand held
The metal bucket tight swishing the warm
Water as she moved back and forth like
Some lone trapeze artist on the high wire
Without apparent fear or knowledge of
Was going on in the street below with the
Passing of the walking dead as Father used
To say and Mrs Febrile sitting on her window
Ledge with her daughter watching gossiping
And nosing about who did what to whom
While all the while you were frightened of
Your mother slipping out the window waving
Her hands and arms as she fell to her doom.

Mother the biggest gift of Allah to us
Mother the biggest gift of Allah to us
Mother the candle burn herself to light our life
Mother the other name of kindness
Mother who hold us nine month and suffer
Mother who feed us from her blood and milk
Mother stays sleepless all the nights holding us
Mother teach us how to walk and talk
Mother guides us and secures us
Mother loves us from start to end
Mother is mother no one can take her place

Remembering Childhood
by accident you come across
an old picture
you recognize the face of your father
beside your mother
with his gun on the side of his body
as reservist of the army
you look closely
your mother pouts
and she is holding on to her
white skirt
you father's right hand grips
his gun
while the left holds on to
the chair just behind your
mother's neck
there is a baby being held
by your mother
it is sleeping and it looks
like you
your father does not like
you and you know it from the very start
you know how to pretend
till he died

But She Knew
But I know
she said
that you love me
and you were sitting
by the pond
you with that cheap fishing rod
which caught nothing
and she sitting there
her hands over her knees
gazing at the still surface
even if you don’t
say it often
she added
laying her chin
on her knees
her green skirt
just above her knees
and you caught
a glimpse of her thighs
where the skirt rose up
I do you love
you said
holding the rod
between hands
it’s just I don’t see the need
to keep on saying it
you added
stretching your eyes
to go as far
as they could
to get a better look
and she said
why do you come here
to fish when you catch
nothing except a cold
in the neck
and stiff joints
and do you want a smoke?
She pulled out
a pack of cigarettes
and you let a hand free
from the rod
and took one
and she put one
between her lips
and lit it with a pink
plastic lighter
then lit yours
and you both
inhaled and exhaled
the smoke rising
over the pond
seeming to sit there
in the still air
and she said
between drags
I do know you love me
I can feel it
in my bones
and in my tingling
flesh at night
as I lay abed
and you thought
of that image
knowing her mother
would be about
the house
with her stern features
and sharp tongue
and beady eyes
but the image was good
you thought
sitting there beside her
in silence
with the drifting smoke
over the pond
and her hand
touching you
and the sky
turning from
dull grey
to a soft blue.

I Had A Dream
I had a dream last night.
I was sitting on the side of a hill somewhere
and all around me
were poets from many lands.
We sat in a circle e
ach of us holding another’s hand.
We talked about our writing,
we talked about our lives,
and we talked about our families,
our husbands and our wives.
There was no strife between us
as we were all friends.
Each had a smile upon their face
as we sat there holding hands.
Then all too soon,
the dream was over
and we all went our separate ways,
each of us wanting
to meet up on another day.

The Words Of Aaron
Maybe the years have told you
Do you remember when life was just a new day?
You know the story dont you?
The one they told you when life was slipping away
Aah! look at the brand new day
Sitting here upon the milky way
Aah! look at the dancing girls
Sitting holding hands across the world
You got a brand new lady
Just like the one you left down in some other place
Reading all the letters
Saw your face coming through on the ouija board
Aah! look at the brand new day
Sitting here upon the milky way
Aah! look at the dancing girls
Sitting holding hands across the world
You heard the words of aaron
He spoke the truth in these things both great and small
You can throw away the ashes
You sweep them over the world on your own accord
Did you know the real answer?
Youd see the kind of mistakes that you cant afford

Pushing One Leg Anne
Push me
through the avenue of trees
Anne said
I'm pissed off with the kids
asking how I lost my leg
and so you pushed
the wheelchair
along the avenue
out of sight of others
away from their childish chatters
and ball games
and cries of want and woes
go on you skinny arse
push push
she muttered
and you pushed on the handles
with all your might
over the dry grass
and she rocked
up and down
and side to side
until she bellowed
this will do small fellow
rest me here
and you let go
of the handles
and puffed for breath
and looked at her
sitting there
in the wheelchair
with her bright eyes
and black hair
and she pulled
your hand towards her
and laid it on her one leg
and said
that's your reward
for pushing me
and she rubbed your hand
over the red skirt
the soft texture
warming the skin
you watched her hand
holding yours
her other hand holding
the side of the chair
sensing her softness
beneath the hardness
and brashness
but saying nothing
just taking in
the sensations and newness
and she said
just as well Matron
hasn't seen this
or it'd give her
such a flush
and she laughed
and let go of your hand
and your hand lingered
over her thigh
like a bird set free
waiting to take
to the sky.

Mother Mother Mother
How you cared for us. Don't keep away from us.I won't surive without you/ Mother Mother Mother Your eyes show me the way. When I fall on my way. You lend me a hand to carry on. Mother Mother Mother You had a very hard life. But you gave your baby your own bread from your own mouth. When she feels hungry. Mother Mother Mother If I pass though this word. I wouldn't find you anywhere. Your sweet smile makes me happy. Mother Mother Mother My love for you will go on forever. Mother In Law
(a. toussaint)
Mother in law, mother in law
Mother in law, mother in law
The worst person I know
Mother in law, mother in law
She worries me so
Mother in law, mother in law
If she leaves us alone
We could have a happy home
Sent from down below
Mother in law, mother in law
Mother in law, mother in law
Satan should be her name
Mother in law, mother in law
To me theyre about the same
Mother in law, mother in law
Everytime I open my mouth
Steps in trying to put me out
How could you stood so low
Mother in law, mother in law
Mother in law, mother in law
Come home with my pay
Mother in law, mother in law
She asks me what I made
Mother in law, mother in law
She thinks her advice is a contribution
If she would leave that would be the solution
Dont come back no more
Mother in law, mother in law
Mother in law, mother in law....

Just Waiting
I was holding you hand,
That time we came to this land,
Walking in brackets of broad smiles,
For that long distance along Nile.
I was holding you hand,
When we first has a stop to a still stand,
Then you took out a necklace jewelry,
Worn it round my neck for your memory,
I was holding you hand,
That very time you said 'NO END'
'll bring down those pillars,
Of so called love of us.
I was embracing,
Whenever you felt we swing,
To the beautiful life melody,
And you said, 'My heart's your custody'
I was embracing,
When moon smiled and sun was facing,
Rivers cheered,
And forests cleared.
I was embracing
That time you felt wilderness chasing,
When we came to this broad full river,
Had no otherwise than watch chirping Weaver.
I was just standing still,
Then you left my hand for 'good will',
A Samaritan who held you innocently,
As I wait by this river patiently.
I was just standing still,
When you last peeped back to see me kneel,
As I hated that strange arm,
That was holding you firm.
I was just standing still,
When you admitted, 'I know what you feel'
And that with me you'd starve,
Since I was and I'm your love.
So I'm just waiting,
Imma stop hating,
I'll command patience 'pon my toe,
I'll rest down under this jungle mistletoe.
So, I'm just waiting,
In faith, keeping my lips biting,
Looking up to your comeback,
In that so called, mmmh! Right track.
So, I'm just waiting,
I'll keep on sitting,
Living like one big fool,
Bound by my faith 'you'll come' in full!

Mother
My mother
Once was
The centre
On my circle maker
My mother
Once was
The warmth
Around a cold hand
My mother
Once was
The smile
On a pensive face
My mother
Once was
The rule
To run rings around
My mother
Once was
The champion
Of assurance and affection
My mother
Once was
The guide
Through a foreign land
My mother
Is now
The open window
Of a tamed bird
My mother
Will always be
In my heart
And part of me.

Each Day Still Lingers.
Each day she’s there in the cafe
Sitting in the same seat with the
Same shopping bag and the same
Coat as she drinks tea and eats a
Large blueberry muffin which she
Eats without delicacy but a great
Deal of pleasure and as you sit you
Study her taking in each aspect of
Her right down to the way her black
Shoes have worn down at the heal
And the lone gold ring on her plump
Finger and you think maybe she was
Married and he got away or died or
Ran off with some younger or slimmer
Other and as you muse she raises her
Mug of tea and like a child she seems
To look at the inside of the mug as she
Lifts it up and maybe you think her grim
Mother told her off once for doing just
That and smacked her hand but now that
Her mother has gone off and died or is
Shut up in some home for the aged she
Can sip and do as she likes without fear
Of censure or smacks on the hand and as
She lowers the mug she sees you across
The way and looks away and wipes the
Rim of the mug with her fingers as if the
Memory of her mother’s chiding still lingers.
