Then I decided I couldn't just crawl in the corner and die, so I started putting pen to paper and wrote some songs. I had no idea what for or who I was going to work with. I tried to find my way and direction.

Pen In Hand
I have tried to analyse myself
and why I do the things, I do.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a policeman,
though I had the height,
I wasn’t that smart,
so as that idea went out the window
and no new ideas came along,
I decided to become a nobody
for what else could I be.
I was no good at English,
nor any good at maths,
I couldn’t even roller skate
as I kept falling down.
Everything I tried to do
I failed miserably,
so why did I take up writing,
it doesn’t make sense at all.
English was my worst subject,
so why would I want to write
I can’t think of any reason for it.
Then came the advent of the Beatles
and everyone wanted to be in a group.
I couldn’t sing and I couldn’t play
an instrument of any sort,
but Paul and John wrote songs,
and Paul had the same birthday as me.
Could it have been an omen?
I co-oped a friend into writing a song
with the immortal words
that if they can do it, why can’t we.
He agreed and millionaires
we were both going to be.
He gave up after our second attempt,
but for some reason I carried on.
Now forty-five years later
I am still trying to figure it out why
I would want to take pen in hand.
I guess it is something
I’ll never understand.

Number Three
Theres only two songs in me and I just wrote the third
Dont know where I got the inspiration or how I wrote the words
Spent my whole life just digging up my musics shallow grave
For the two songs in me and the third one I just made
A rich man once told me
Hey lifes a funny thing
A poor man once told me
That he cant afford to speak
Now Im in the middle like a bird without a beak cause
Theres just two songs in me and I just wrote the third
Dont know where I got the inspiration or how I wrote the words
Spent my whole life just digging up my musics shallow grave
For the two songs in me and the third one I just made
So I went to the president
And I asked old whats-his-name
Has he ever gotten writers block
Or something like the same
He just started talking
Like he was on tv
If theres just two songs in ya, boy
Whaddaya want from me?
So I bought myself some denim pants
And a silver guitar
But I politely told the ladies
Youll still have to call me sir
Because I have to keep my self-respect
Ill never be a star
Since theres just two songs in me
And this is number three

Burning Paper
I wrote you a letter, but I threw it away,
I knew I would, I would if I waited a day,
It made me feel better, what I had to say,
I knew it would, it did, but I waited.
I hardly bothered, though I laboured all day,
I work so hard, there's no time left to please you.
The day I decided I had nothing to say, I'll never learn,
I'm burning all this paper away.
(chorus)
A rhythym in your walking tree, its a tapestry of pride your weaving,
Over, under, ropes of wonder, tie me to a chair.
I'm dirty feet on your clean white shoes, I'm the man of the mess that
greets you, been graced with a slap in the face, tangled in your hair.
I think its time you let me go,
I'm too in love, let me go,
I think its time you let me go,
I'm too in love,
I think its time you let me go,
I'm too in love, let me go,
(chorus)
I wrote you a letter, but I threw it away,
I knew I would, I would, if I waited a day,
It made me feel better, but I have to say,
I'll never learn, I'm burning all this paper away,
I'm burning all this paper away,
I'm burning all this paper.

Four Chord Wonder
How many bands have wrote this song before?
I can name at least fifty...
I bet you could name a hundred more.
There's over a couple thousand
Chord progressions around.
Whill someone tell me who decided
They'd run this one into the ground?!
(chorus) i'm putting a stop to it once and for all!
I'm putting my fist right though the wall!
I'm telling you once and for all...
You better not write this stupid song again!
"i've got a little plan, so listen up.
We could write a four chord wonder,
And make a million bucks!"
No need to mention names
Cause' you know who you are.
Take word of my advice
Or i'll break your guitar!
I think it's time to set things straight...
I just wrote the song i hate.
And, i'll write it again and again and again

Still Don' t Find Home?
Close your eyes
Take a deep breath
Still don’t find your home?
Travel around the globe
Sit in nowhere street
Still don’t get your journey home?
Stuck in the coffee corner
Look into crossing human
Still you long for another home?
Have a pack of wonderful work
With all flowers float over you
Still couldn’t find your paradise home?
Hug your lover
Cry your sorrow
Still couldn’t name your own home?
Release your pride
Make it to be simple
Still don’t want to go home?
Write a long note
Do a different course
Still looking for something wrong?
Go on your boring daily
With all kids laugh around you
Still couldn’t see your lovely home?

When we first started playing in the early days, none of us really had any idea about writing our own songs yet. We were struggling how to learn our instruments and play songs to be able to perform for people.

Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag
by Bob Dylan
I was sittin' on a stump
Down in New Orleans,
I was feelin' kinda low down,
Dirty and mean.
Along came a fella
And he didn't even ask.
He says, "I know of a woman
That can fix you up fast."
I didn't think twice,
I said like I should,
"Let's go find this lady
That can do me some good."
We walked across the river
On a sailin' spree
And we came to a door
Called one-oh-three.
I was just about ready
To give it a little knock
When out comes a fella
Who couldn't even walk.
He's linkin' and a-slinkin',
Couldn't stand on his feet,
And he moaned and he groaned
And he shuffled down the street.
Well, out of the door
There comes another man.
He wiggled and he wobbled,
He couldn't hardly stand.
He had this frightened
Look in his eyes,
Like he just fought a bear,
He was ready to die.
Well, I peeked through the key crack,
Comin' down the hall
Was a long-legged man
Who couldn't hardly crawl.
He muttered and he uttered
In broken French,
And he looked like he'd been through
A monkey wrench.
Well, by this time
I was a-scared to knock,
I was a-scared to move,
I's in a state of shock.
I hummed a little tune
And I shuffled my feet
And I started walkin' backwards
Down that broad street.
Well, I got to the corner,
I tried my best to smile.
I turned around the corner
And I ran a bloody mile.
Man, I wasn't runnin'
'Cause I was sick,
I was just a-runnin'
To get out of there quick.
Well, I tripped right along
And I'm a-wheezin' in my chest.
I musta run a mile
In a minute or less.
I walked on a log
And I tripped on a stump,
I caught a fast freight
With a one-arm jump.
So, if you're travelin' down
Louisiana way,
And you feel kinda lonesome
And you need a place to stay,
Man, you're better off
In your misery
Than to tackle that lady
At one-oh-three.

The first song that I wrote was when I was with The Del Rios. I was like 14 years old but I was always putting my thoughts down on paper even before then because it was like an escape - a way of unleashing all the stuff.

Never Change
Someone's always tellin' me I'm no good
well I don't care what you say
someone's always givin' me a hard time
well I live day to day
someone's always puting me in my place
like I don't know where I am
so I'll just sit here in the corner
without any
direction
Maybe it's it's all in my head
I think that it's something something you said
I understand that some things will
never change
never change
Someone's always kickin' me to the curb
well it's grindin' off my face
someone's always pushing me to the side
like I'm standing in the way
someone's always getting up in my face
like I don't know who I am
so once again i'm in the corner
without any
direction
Maybe it's it's all in my head
I think that it's something something you said
I understand that some things will
never change
Somebody's always out to get me
somebody's always tryin' to kill me
understand some things will
never change
Why did you have to go and change
couldn't you just have stayed the same
why did you have to go and say
Maybe it's it's all in my head
I think that it's something something you said
understand that some things will
never change
never change
Somebody's always out to get me
somebody's always tryin' to kill me
understand some things will never change
Why did you have to go and change
couldn't you just have stayed the same
why did you have to go and say
understand some things don't change
Why did you have to go and change
couldn't you just have stayed the same
why did you have to go and say
understand some things don't change
Never change
some things never change
some things never change

Down On Music Row
Chorus:
Down on music row
Down on music row
If you want to be a star
Thats where youve got to go
I could feel a change a comin
I left my hometown a hummin
With my ol guitar a strummin
Songs that I had wrote
I was on my way to nashville
I just couldnt hardly wait
till I could sing my songs
To the folks on music row
I got into nashville early
Sleepy, hungry, tired and dirty
And on the steps of rca
I ate a stale, sweet roll
In the fountain at the hall of fame
I washed my face and read the names
In the walkway of the stars
Down on music row
Repeat chorus
I waited there till eight oclock
When office doors became unlocked
Then I started walkin
Down the streets of music row
Just a walkin up and down the street
Tryin to find out who to see
To help me get on record
And to hear the songs Id wrote
But I found it goin rough
Everyone was all tied up
Either in a conference
Or in the studio
They said that I could leave a tape
But theyd suggest I didnt wait
cause everyone was awful busy
Down on music row
But I could feel that change a comin
And I just kept right on a hummin
With my ol guitar still strummin
All them songs that Id wrote
And then chet and bob at rca
Well, they listened to my songs that day
And they both told me that I was on my way
Down on music row
Repeat chorus

Songs About Me, Songs About You
Well youve been movin all down that highway
You can turn another page
And if you finally get to the old folks home
Then you can finally act your age
I can make a million dollars
And you can spend it as fast as it comes
And you can sit there and cry on a bed full of lies
And be thankin that you got you some
CHORUS
Theyll be songs about me
Theyll be songs about you
Theyll be songs about everything from money to booze
But there wont be no songs of regret
Cause I aint wrote no songs like that yet
No I aint wrote no songs like that yet
You can hear me on the radio
You can see me on TV
You can dig you a hole to find your soul
And it gets you away from me
You can run as fast as an hourglass
You can fly as high as the wind
See you can be strong for as long as you like
But youll end up right back where you can
REPEAT CHORUS
I got a song for every occasion
Ive been told I got away with words
Ive been told that Id be loved forever
But its been only lies that Ive heard
Ive been bold in my days
Ive been goin my ways
Ive been packed up and moaned and gone right away
I belong to a song for as long as I say
But Ill always have a song to play
REPEAT CHORUS (2x)
No I aint wrote no songs like that yet (8x)

Working Out of a Corner Office
I thought I started out strong
After taking many body blows
My guard began to drop
It felt like - -my head being snapped back
I keep moving while holding on
Waiting for the bell
Once seated in my corner
My cut man
Goes to work
Cotton swabs and alum
Attempting to stem the red flow
From above my right eye
He presses on my face
With a piece of ice-cold steel
Trying to keep the swelling down
My manager is moving around
In front of me waving an ice-bag
Replaying his advice from all my fights
The crowd has their opinions too
If I could turn and challenge them
To step inside the ring
That would get them
To back off
That and standing up and spitting
Water and blood in their direction
Into a bucket that sits on the apron
Near the ringside seats
Instead my mouthpiece is slid back in
Past swollen lips while I wait in my corner
For the bell that will start the next round

[I dont' usually make comments on my poems. That's up to the readers to do. However, I've heard from so many readers that can't get past the controlling image of this poem; boxing. I wrote this poem long ago. Long before I saw the movie, 'Michael Clayton.' For some of the other facets to work for the reader of this poem, I have two suggestions: 1) it's out on DVD now so you can rent the movie 'Micheal Clayton.' Think about the character Arthur working out of a corner office, and 2) like any poem, my title is trying to give you a hint of what direction the poem is going to take. a) metaphor of 'working out' - - trying to take care of yourself and b) the stress, grind and responsibility of working in middle or upper business managemnt.
I put this after the end of my poem. I don't want to spoil it for a first time reader. I hope they got, on their own; that this poem is not just about boxing. The same way that Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is not about the cruelty to an Albatross, nor is Virgina Wool's 'The Death of the Moth' about lepidopterology.]

Paper
Paper promises, Dunstead said,
paper cups, wallpaper being stuck
up on the wall for the next to last
time, paper tigers, paper to wipe
the ass and best of all paper to
create art, to have it from the heart,
to see it out there, being gazed at,
studied by some bearded guy with
glasses and paper money to buy
the next paper to create and then
if I’m lucky the muse turning up on
time and giving me the big nudge
in the right direction or some paper
picture of some nude dame giving
the long time wished for erection.

When I started making my own records, I had this idea of drowning out the singer and putting the rest in the foreground. It was the background that interested me.
When I wrote those two songs, I couldn't have been any closer to the bottom.

No Direction Home
Crawl upon the earth, scour the universe you know
Set my compass north, circumscribe the earth and go - no direction home
Whats my part in this, whats this dream I cant let go
Whats your weight of this, what d'ya want to see and who d'ya want to know
You've no direction home, no direction home, no direction
Feels like all is lost, there's nowhere left to go
Through the seasoned sands, cross the sky to the morning snow
Is there no direction home, nowhere left to go, no direction home
