I think philosophers can do things akin to theoretical scientists, in that, having read about empirical data, they too can think of what hypotheses and theories might account for that data. So there's a continuity between philosophy and science in that way.

The scientists often have more unfettered imaginations than current philosophers do. Relativity theory came as a complete surprise to philosophers, and so did quantum mechanics, and so did other things.

It is, I think, particularly in periods of acknowledged crisis that scientists have turned to philosophical analysis as a device for unlocking the riddles of their field. Scientists have not generally needed or wanted to be philosophers.

Accusations are made directly to Rome about theologians from persons who are not theologians. Some of these accusations are anonymous. The local bishop should be the one to relate to theologians to determine orthodoxy.

Job's forthright indictment of the injustice of this world is surely right. The ways of the world are weird and much more unpredictable than either scientists or theologians generally make things look.

Sure, science involves trial and error. Scientists refine theories each day. But as they do, they help us grasp more clearly the wonders of the world and the universe.

The problem for Rome, then, is how and when the intervention should be done with a sense of the possibility of going too far in limiting the freedom of theologians. This is not an easy time - neither for Rome nor for the theologians.

0012 Creation?

Creation out of
nothing, nowhere, no-whence?

How much more intriguing
and possible,
even probable,
if Creation came out of
everything, everywhere,
everythere, everywhence..
alltime, allspace, all,

which is after all - or before all -
what we all wish to return to,
enjoy, and be, and know…

scientists, why not meet
philosophers, worshippers,
and poets, where Creation is all
just a great big work of art
made out of forever-love and therefore-law, as
one and all?

If we do discover a complete theory, it should be in time understandable in broad principle by everyone. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people be able to take part in the discussion of why we and the universe exist.

Rome should sometimes intervene and say this or that is not in conformity with the Catholic faith. Theologians should understand that. Some theologians go too far, for example, reducing the Catholic faith to a universal philosophy.

The First Photo That Memory Took

that moment when …
when memory first opened its treasured album
and began to make our picture of ourselves -

it belongs to all of us, to each of us.
it’s where each meets all, and all meets each;
more of ourselves than we have ever stopped to analyze:

that blurred, out-of-focus moment – was it
the pattern on the hood of our pram,
the strap around our kiddicart,
the turn of the stair,
the pattern of the bricks around the fountain in the park,
the memory of our first fall;
the lion’s head fountain on the wall?

was it not a person, of
those who peered into our cot, or lifted us,
simply because
we could already control those beings around us
with a dribbly smile, a vague wave of our hand?

was it the first thing that we remember
because it paid no attention to ourself,
but simply, was… was, outside our favoured world?

whether we ever open the album, or do not,
it sits there, unexplained,
holding some secret of a consciousness
beyond the theories of scientists and philosophers;
inevitably, ours

to be followed – some years after –
and this, we may deny at first –
by that moment of a further consciousness:
when - as equally mysterious, unforgettable,
and often unremembered to this day -
we knew that we knew something
but did not know what it was we knew.

Question Of Tomorrow

Atlast underground nuclear test
To show India at its best
All over the world invoking protest
Our engineers and scientists better than the rest!

Scientists proud, diplomats justify
Public applaud, politicians protect
Peace loving worries, economists mystified
Philosophers perturbed, neighbours grumble!

National security paramount sure
Pride of the people fine to ensure
Ego of the engineers important indeed
Skills of the scientists progress with speed!

Nation atlast gained or lost
Neighbours' jealousy looming large
Fear of war gripping fast
Do we need at this stage?

War the child of sickly mind
Peace the fruit of healthy brain
War and peace flow from men and their mind
War abhorred, peace nursed prosperity can't drain!

'Atom for peace'
Avowed goal of yesterday
Nuclear power for peace
Clarion call of today
Do we go with ease
Sure question of tomorrow!
