I started singing about three years ago, I entered a local singing competition called Stratford Idol. The other people in the competition had been taking singing lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasn't taking it too seriously at the time, I would just sing around the house. I was only 12 and I got second place.

Singing All Day
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing,
Oo, my, my, my,
Oo, my, my, my.
Went down to the station to look for her there,
Looked through the crowds for a glimpse of her hair,
Nothing to see but the crowds keep a-staring at me,
My, my,
Oo, my, my, my.
Down in the street, tryn to remember,
Shuffling my feet outside a menswear,
Is that her in the fur coat?
No its not december yet,
My, my, my,
Oo, my, my, my.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing.
Back to the house, maybe shell phone me,
Singing my song, feeling so lonely.
Ill sing very softly, so if the phone rings
I can hear it, I can hear it.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing.
Singing all day, singing 'bout nothing,
Oo, my, my, my,
Oo, my, my, my.

I grew up on musicals, and I know they are quite the thing now, but I'm actually a little indignant, because I started taking singing lessons years ago - I put the time in!

A Song For You
(leon russell)
Ive been so many places
In my life and time
Ive sung a lot of songs
I made some bad rhymes
Ive acted out my life in stages
Ten thousand people watching
But were alone now
Im singing this song for you
I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I treated you unkindly
But darling cant you see?
Theres no-one more important to me
Oh, baby, cant you please see through me?
cause were alone now and
Im singing this song for you
You taught me precious secrets
Of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front
I was hiding
Oh, but now Im so much better
If the words dont come together
Just listen to the melody
cause my love in there hiding
Ooh, ooh
Oh, I love you in a place
Where theres no space or time
Love you for my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and
I was singing this song for you
We were alone
I was singing this song for you, oh
Singing
I was singing, singing, singing, singing, singing this song for you
Oh, yes
Singing this song for you

I didn't understand that I could sing until I was like 11 or 12. My mom heard me singing around the house and she said, What are you doing? You really can sing! So then I started going to school and singing to the girls.

My father being in the movie business, I thought being an actor would be great. But when I started singing to people in coffeehouses, you know, singing folk music and then, later, singing songs that I started to write myself, I felt more than an affinity for it.

I've never taken vocal lessons. My early trumpet training and a fortunate talent for singing has always been enough for me. In the case of rock singing, I've always felt it was better to remain a bit untrained to maintain your individuality.

Valentine Comp Poem 1
She sent me out in the rain
When I forgot to get a card one year
And has moaned for a score of years and more
That my teeth fell out and not my hair
Now she’s got me writing words that don’t rhyme
Because she wants me to win the competition
For the best Valentine
Oh, what this poor man has to endure
To get a some peace when I come through the door
All I can hope is that this will be a hit
And I’ll get some silence
From my little moan-a-minute
5 February 1992
Author’s Note:
This was the first attempt for a competition on a local radio station in 1992. However, it was never entered as they only want five lines and this was too long. Four days later, I wrote another one, see Valentine Comp Poem 2 and entered that.

Music My Love
'Music my love, singing in heart repletes
I swear on my singing you too love it
My notes, my scales, singing my choice, my taste
When I go on singing sure for repeats
Listen to my singing closing your eyes
Honour you my singing with mind open
And you to my singing you ears sharpen
Never to my singing should you despise'
'Oh me to your singing I close my eyes
And me to your singing with mind open
I pray as your singing in heart repletes
And mine to your singing ears do depise
Not mine but yours, singing not to happen
Music your love, singing yours no repeats'

Singing Merry Christmas
Another time of year
Has come
To be loved in a special
Way
We will try to do whats
Right
On this very merry christmas
Day
Candles burning
Children singing goodnight
Theres no worries
Because santas on his way
So merry christmas to you
Merry christmas to all who share
On christmas day
Merry christmas to you
Singing merry christmas
Although many years
Have passed
Im sure the (? ) of christmas
Remains the same
Candles burning
Children singing goodnight
Theres no worries
Because santas on his way
So merry christmas to you
Merry christmas to all who share
On christmas day
Merry christmas to you
Singing merry christmas
Through all the people I know
And all the people I care for
Well make christmas last
Forever
So come along everyone
And sing this song with us
Singing merry christmas
To you
Merry christmas to all
Who share on christmas day
Merry christmas to you
Singing merry christmas
Singing merry christmas
To you
Merry christmas to all
Who share on christmas day
Merry christmas to you
Singing merry christmas
Santas on his way

No Fun Without Challenges!
I am a bird, flying in the sky,
Singing the beautiful notes,
That my vocal cord can spell,
Up near the cloud, it is cool,
Singing the songs of love,
Travel on the whitish cotton shroud,
Expressing my thought,
Without fear and freight,
Hearing me singing,
Someone wanted me,
To sing in his courtyard,
Ordered his subordinates,
To catch and clip my wings,
To put me in a cage,
For his own entertainment,
When I lose my freedom,
I forget all the notes,
Just shut my beaks,
Open only to eat.

The Route March
Did you hear the children singing, O my brothers?
Did you hear the children singing as our troops went marching past?
In the sunshine and the rain,
As they’ll never sing again—
Hear the little school-girls singing as our troops went swinging past?
Did you hear the children singing, O my brothers?
Did you hear the children singing for the first man and the last?
As they marched away and vanished,
To a tune we thought was banished—
Did you hear the children singing for the future and the past?
Shall you hear the children singing, O my brothers?
Shall you hear the children singing in the sunshine or the rain?
There’ll be sobs beneath the ringing
Of the cheers, and ’neath the singing
There’ll be tears of orphan children when
Our Boys come back again!
