SIgnposts

Let us spin this signpost
Then choose where we shall go
So where our path will take us
We will never know
That's not until we get there
But that could take some time
So don't believe in signposts
They're just a state of mind.

A Road Well Travelled

A road well travelled does not the journey ease
Nor do well placed signposts aid our itineraries
A road well travelled is rough and rutted where
Others have passed by this way overburdened with their cares
A road well-travelled may be full of risks and dangers
You keep yourself unto yourself and never talk to strangers.

This road well travelled has no final end in sight
It can be sunny in the daytime but quite frightening at night
This road well travelled can sometimes just disappear
And you stop not knowing where to go shivering with fear
This road well travelled sometimes returns you to its start
And leaves you walking round in circles with a sad and heavy heart.

My road well travelled has many toll gates on the way
Each time I ask directions there’s a need to always pay
My road well travelled is a lonely road at times
It is a real road that I know it’s not just a state of mind
My road well travelled is not just my road you see
It’s a road that many others take and it’s called anxiety.

The Higher You Climb

There is no comeback from the big divide
Maybe theres a future to be found waiting on the other side
If its illusion, then what is real?
In lifes confusion, take what you can
Fight it till you reach the goal.
And the higher you climb you can fall
But never look down
And the faster you run, its a crawl
To the end of the line.
Seems all directions lead to one place
There are no signposts guiding me
It takes a long time to see
And the higher you climb you can fall
But never look down
And the faster you run, its a crawl
To the end of the line.
The age of reason has come and gone
The changing seasons move on and on until you reach the goal
And the higher you climb you can fall
But never look down
And the faster you run, its a crawl
To the end of the line.

In the steps of Rumi 82: Ignorance, obstructions, devils

Ignorance? Don’t worry. It’s light..

Divine light. Frozen. Waiting for the day when -
isn’t that a little lightening on the eastern horizon?
Do you see it? Now I look, it’s definitely there..
it’s growing as I look…
this could be the beginning…

Obstructions? Don’t worry. They’re light…

Divine light. Hidden. You see them, and –
now you see them, now you take a good look at them,
suddenly you can see round them, over them, above them…
oh, they weren’t obstructions… they were
signposts, here’s a big black nothing
standing as a sentinel across the path…

Devils? Don’t worry. They’re God…

It’s God saying, how strong are you,
are you ready to see me yet, or
will the brightness be too much for you?
No problem - take your time...
invent something - ignorance, obstructions, devils -
... feel a hero to overcome it all...
I'll wait... I've all the time in the world...

They, those devils, don’t like you to know, of course –
it’s fun playing with people; but
it’s no fun knowing you are bound
finally to lose… God has to give them
a reason to work hard, to enjoy themselves… like you?

Don’t worry. It’s all light..
have a bright day…

The White Moth

IF a leaf rustled, she would start:
And yet she died, a year ago.
How had so frail a thing the heart
To journey where she trembled so?
And do they turn and turn in fright,
Those little feet, in so much night?

The light above the poet’s head
Streamed on the page and on the cloth,
And twice and thrice there buffeted
On the black pane a white-winged moth:
’T was Annie’s soul that beat outside
And “Open, open, open!” cried:

“I could not find the way to God;
There were too many flaming suns
For signposts, and the fearful road
Led over wastes where millions
Of tangled comets hissed and burned—
I was bewildered and I turned.

“O, it was easy then! I knew
Your window and no star beside.
Look up, and take me back to you!”
—He rose and thrust the window wide.
’T was but because his brain was hot
With rhyming; for he heard her not.

But poets polishing a phrase
Show anger over trivial things;
And as she blundered in the blaze
Towards him, on ecstatic wings,
He raised a hand and smote her dead;
Then wrote “That I had died instead!”

A Soul Pit

I rescued my soul from its Drowning Pit
awash with seething anger and sorrowful regrets
offering it gentle release and conversation
to recant the journey brought it to the Pit
and how the road there might have revealed
signposts, warnings and beseeches.

It could not catch its breath and I spoke first
asking how it came to that state
where it was willing to chance suicide
and toss itself overboard to oblivion.

'The soul you know' I said 'lives on forever
and cannot die
how then was it then you planned to down fall
and expire, a Soulful death
which by definition cannot be:
no soul dies-
it lives on if harmed in suffering.'

My Soul composed its words, speaking slowly
'True I did not die even as I bottomed in the Pit
but Soul's you know can be obscured and lose
the will to continue to live if their Spirit force is
drained from them dry.'
That Spirit Force is the Soul's origin, its life force;
for Life itself gives birth to all Souls you know.'

'Soul you are wise' I said ' What will you do now
to regain that spark
without which Eternity dies?
Will you avoid another attempt as suicide? '

Oh, Soul said I know I'll not die, it is just that
sometimes a Soul, untested, without trials, held in reserve,
withers away standing up.
'The Pit, ' Soul said quipping, 'was just a stop.'

Gotta Keep On Movin'

[CD]
We gotta keep on goin'
To where we are not knowing
We gotta keep on goin'
Move it on yeah!
We gotta keep on movin'
If we stay we end up losin'
We gotta keep on goin'
Roll along now!
We gotta keep on rollin'
Just gotta keep on strollin'
Better keep 'em rollin'
Slide along yeah!
We gotta keep on slidin'
Roller coaster we are ridin'
We gotta hold on tight
& have some fun yeah!
(Bridge:)
We believe life's a journey
Misguiding signposts leading you all astray
But just remember all of the paths
All lead the same way now
What's important is how you go forth,
Are you racin' or cruising along ?
Are the motorways really the best way ?
Is that where you really belong ?
We gotta keep on goin'
To where we are not knowing
We gotta keep on goin'
Movin' on yeah!
We gotta keep on movin'
If we stay we end up losin'
We gotta keep on goin'
Roll along now!
We gotta keep on rollin'
Just gotta keep on strollin'
Better keep on rollin'
Slide along yeah!
We gotta keep on slidin'
Roller coaster we are ridin'
We gotta hold on tight
& have some fun now!
[Jed]
Don't give in
Start livin'
We can win this war!

The Easy Mentor

Like a flock in need of a shepherd
languishing on vagaries of life
open to attacks of predators
from all flanks a sitting duck
like the rudderless ship in tumult
tossed by the angry waves
wishing for futile serene moor
my people are like a hunting dog
that turns a deaf ear to its owner’s whistle
lost in the wilderness of inhumanity
becomes the haunted by vicissitudes

I am the easy mentor’s hoarse voice
like the tinny squirrel's teeth
that break the riddle of the kernel
come to me, sit down let’s reason
tear stained cheeks suckled sighs
a place in my bosom your recess
as the fearless shepherd boy hunt
with powers from above entrenched
a lion and a bear is equalled to a Goliath
seeking not yet repose in complacency
I come to rouse, funnel your hopes
that sprout on the stubborn rubrics
which made my kinsmen foragers
to nurture where society ransacked
to develop where greed underdeveloped
to bring succour to the down trodden
to beam a ray that has been prophesied
in the dark vestiges of resignation
where ignorance was once bliss
when the will yield followership thrive
when every one is an island of integrity
where conscience signposts our dual paths
there I will soon lay my life for you.

Red Lights

(d. pickerill/p. odonoughue)
You stop on a red light, your life starts again on green
You watch all the colours then fall back into a dream
Theres headlights behind you, they flash out a silver surprise
You go for the hand brake, theres madness behind your eyes
Chorus:
The road goes on for mile and miles
You rush cos you havent got the time
Stop, stop, stop for the red light
Yay, yay, yay is for the green
One, one, one Im on a blue light
Keep your licence clean
He flicks on the amber, a machine gun in all but name
You push down the lever, well, two can play that game
As red lights rush by you theyre vivid and red as blood
The chase makes you feel so good
The road goes on for mile and miles
You rush cos you havent got the time
Dont, dont dont go on a red light
Yay, yay, yay is for the green
One, one, one Im on a blue light
Keep your licence clean
The flash lines are flowing, streaking by so fast
Signposts are flying and grey rain is slanting past
The colours are spinning, a pain on the side of your face
And blackness surrounds you, you finally lost the race
The road goes on for mile and miles
You rush cos you havent got the time
Dont, dont dont go on a red light
Yay, yay, yay wait for the green
One, one, one Im on a blue light
Keep your licence clean

A Timbered Choir

Even while I dreamed I prayed that what I saw was only fear and no foretelling,
for I saw the last known landscape destroyed for the sake
of the objective, the soil bludgeoned, the rock blasted.
Those who had wanted to go home would never get there now.

I visited the offices where for the sake of the objective the planners planned
at blank desks set in rows. I visited the loud factories
where the machines were made that would drive ever forward
toward the objective. I saw the forest reduced to stumps and gullies; I saw
the poisoned river, the mountain cast into the valley;
I came to the city that nobody recognized because it looked like every other city.
I saw the passages worn by the unnumbered
footfalls of those whose eyes were fixed upon the objective.

Their passing had obliterated the graves and the monuments
of those who had died in pursuit of the objective
and who had long ago forever been forgotten, according
to the inevitable rule that those who have forgotten forget
that they have forgotten. Men, women, and children now pursued the objective
as if nobody ever had pursued it before.

The races and the sexes now intermingled perfectly in pursuit of the objective.
the once-enslaved, the once-oppressed were now free
to sell themselves to the highest bidder
and to enter the best paying prisons
in pursuit of the objective, which was the destruction of all enemies,
which was the destruction of all obstacles, which was the destruction of all objects,
which was to clear the way to victory, which was to clear the way to promotion, to salvation, to progress,
to the completed sale, to the signature
on the contract, which was to clear the way
to self-realization, to self-creation, from which nobody who ever wanted to go home
would ever get there now, for every remembered place
had been displaced; the signposts had been bent to the ground and covered over.

Every place had been displaced, every love
unloved, every vow unsworn, every word unmeant
to make way for the passage of the crowd
of the individuated, the autonomous, the self-actuated, the homeless
with their many eyes opened toward the objective
which they did not yet perceive in the far distance,
having never known where they were going,
having never known where they came from.

Song: The Road to Nowhere

To travel the road to nowhere.
The soul's dark amazon.
Eternal peace is anywhere,
the mind might set upon.

To travel the road to nowhere.
To know you're really gone.
And when you finally get there,
to find your god is Ron.

There's something in the cupboard, boy.
There's something in the dark.
There's something in the cupboard, boy,
that leaves a lasting mark.

There's something in the cupboard, boy.
Old secrets gather dust.
There's something in the cupboard, boy,
that reeks decay and must.

To travel the road to nowhere.
Reading signposts from beyond.
As self-deceit completes defeat,
a cold ghost light is shone,
on Ron. On Ron.

He learned to sham at his father's knee.
He knew the power of story.
He lived by lies and fantasies,
and dreamed of fame and glory.

So travel the road but beware,
for he drew an arcane map.
His weak and dismal followers,
could see no fatal trap.

But in his inner circle,
his worth would soon reveal.
To those that rail and cavil,
he'd crush beneath his heel.

There's something in the cupboard, boy.
The sweetest scent of musk.
There's something in the cupboard, boy,
as warm and moist as lust.

To travel the road to nowhere.
It's not the smoothest ride.
To have all faith you must defer,
to a self-referring guide.

To travel the road to nowhere.
To avoid the rush and throng.
Unravel in the space of somewhere,
and sing a specious song.

There's something in the cupboard, boy.
It's got an evil breath.
There's something in the cupboard, boy,
that toys with fear and death.

To travel the road to nowhere.
And wield your magic wand.
A shuffling prisoner of despair,
when fragile hopes abscond.

To travel the road to nowhere.
A funeral dress you don.
All truth is moulded out there,
like a Sci-Fi writer's con.

There's something in the cupboard, boy.
You hear it scratch and whine.
There's something in the cupboard, boy,
both bedevilled and divine.

To travel the road to nowhere.
To follow a different sun.
To travel the road with due care,
not to end as you begun.

To travel the road to nowhere,
to life's grim denouement.
Be sighted by the cross hairs,
released from earthly bond.

To travel the road to nowhere.
Your face is drawn and wan.
Your self-belief masks hidden grief,
while the thief of time moves on.

Towards the blue all rivers flow.

Storms ravish the coastlines as boundaries blur
Signposts are lost to the surge. Pushing, purging
The land is left fertile yet lifeless whilst microscopic
Parasites feed upon stagnant bloodlust. They feast
Upon decomposing beasts. Winds whip the stallions
Of their riding, spurring, cheering on with a howl.
Overturning leaves, Overturning trees as if some
Giant had arose from his slumber and sought his
Firewood beyond the realm of childhood fantasy.
Tides push against the shore in repetitive motions
Each time gaining ground, moment after moment
Measure for measure they will take in the grains of
The shore, soaking them more and more.

Only life breathes beyond the doorway.
Everyone who comes to the future lives here, now.

Who would be so bold as to take the greatest leap of faith
Casting in ritual away the face they hath known so long?
Hiding in the shadows as molten earth comes rolling
Slow and slumbersome down the valley side, charring black
With death and crimson fury the green dreams we once beheld.
Where are we to run? Where are we to turn?
What but ash is there left to yearn for?

Seek release, seek freedom – Escape from upon the leash
Take an outsiders look within your form
Step inside the eye of the storm with grace.

Observation becomes perverted,
Eternally inverted as whispers are carried bearing
Life to a misunderstanding whilst Rumour foul in
Her presence runs off to breed contempt as we attempt
In standing our ground – Forever children unfound.

Against the storm all winds blow
Towards the blue all rivers flow.
Towards the Earth upon which we grow
We just show respect in reverence.

What futility it would be to stand against the very things that grant me life
Whether there be sunlight or be there rain, whether I be dancing or in pain
I’ll know that nothing is ever the same beyond the will for the flower to bloom again.

Mother Earth in all her forms empowers
If only you would allow it she would shower you,
Take you away from the blue and leave you
Wondering what it is to speak the truth.
