Dasgupta asks...

What have you gained
if you have not gained yourself,
yourself the immortal,
yourself the infinite ?

What have you gained
if you have never tasted in your life
the deep longing to be free,
the deep longing to be liberated?

The spirit of the saints of all the ages
whispers in my ears -

what have you gained
if you have never tasted
the joys of self-surrender?

If your heart has not longed
to make of you a flute
in the hands of Krishna,
master musician of the universe?

And if you have not been able
to sweeten all your miseries
with a touch of God?

(versified from a lecture in Evanston, US, in 1926)

Ruminating the past

I gained my parents at my birth.
I gained my brothers and sisters
And then my kids and their kids
Every gain to me was a pleasure.
Then I grieve over the loss of them,
One by one, or at leaving them.
I weep and weep, profoundly weep
Over their death or in their sick beds.
What we lose is what we had gained.
The gained are destined to be lost
Or from them we shall be lost.
I recall the good they have done.
I repent the wrongs done to them.
Rumination of pleasure and regrets
Keep me at the old age engaged.

Rolling The Eyes

Stephen struggled not to roll his eyes,
Built on the ground, his legs sprouted.
Being friendly his fire came from the heart,
Guns were from his soldiery a lesson
To the brave and the oxen who invaded.
His eyes gained sight every now and then,
After the shocks the eyes repainted the scene.
The shocks gravely impaired Stephen,
On the sloping ground, on the carved land.

Ophrah

Swords and spears,
And of the blacksmiths in my town;
But the alarm struck the whole army and,
The ground shock and Ophrah gained power!
And for the ploughshares, mattocks, axes and the sickles,
But i will always be with you my love.

Blood Sport

There's nothing
to be gained
sifting over old ground
of who's the winner
the fox or the hound
the hunted or the baying pack
the master of ceremonies
cracks the whip
Uncle Sam
rides on their back
guaranteeing blood on the track.

Material Possessions

Throughout life if we work hard or inherit
many material possessions may be gained.
Objects which may fulfill or clutter our lives?
Yet that which is gained can also be lost.

And God said 'What profit to a man if he
gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? '

Matthew 16: 26.

Thanksgiving

What a day to dismantle a roller-coaster.
Well, they are taking it down--
the tracks are all over the ground
and the ties drawn up. The ticket office
is shut, the calliope covered with tarps.

These workmen move their rides
from town to town, with the weather,
and a day gained dismantling
is a day to them. They are grateful
for the day gained, and for the silence
in a park where only ducks and I remain.

As if against the numb fall sky,
sounds of hammers and crowbars
and the changing voice of one man's oldest son
rebound from pond to light pole and away.
Tomorrow they'll be on their way
to Arkansas, or a place they haven't
been before; today they're making time.

Today they're making time. The doors
of the van are open, the van is dark.
The cars stand there in a line, as if
they are not well or have something
to tell the man who stands on the tail-gate.
This corner of the park is nearly flat.

Is There A Legal Ground

Is there a legal ground?
One can stand on to feel safe and sound.
Is there a legal ground?
One that can be found that's not shaking around.
Is there a legal ground?

One that is near,
Not to be feared...
And if one should fall,
A solidness is clear!

Is there a legal ground?
Anywhere.
One understood.
One that is shared.
Is there a legal ground?

One that is cemented...
Making feelings of it different,
With a jumping up and down...
Packing heavy weighted pounds.
Is there a legal ground?
Around...
To be found!
Is there a legal ground?

Around...
To be found.
Is there a legal ground?

Around...
To be found.
Is there a legal ground?

Still Beautiful

I been told by many that I have gained a few pounds
And that I look a lot better if I lost a little weight.
Well, yesterday I got out the shower and stared at
my body in all its’ natural glory.
I looked at myself from head to toe,
front to back and even sideways.
Yeah, I might have gained a few pounds
But that is alright because from my point view
I'm still beautiful.

Off The Ground

There must have been a lot of heartache
For you to sink so low.
You must have had a ton of pressure.
Only answer if the answers no.
I need loving, you need loving too.
Doesnt take a lot to get off the ground.
There must have been a lot of magic
When the world was born.
Let me be the one you wish for,
One you call for, when youre all alone.
I need loving, you need loving too.
Wouldnt take a lot to get off the ground.
Off the ground, off the ground.
Fly around, fly around.
Hear the sound, hear the sound.
Off the ground, off the ground.
Though it takes a lot of power
To make a bog tree grow.
It doesnt need a pot of knowledge.
For a seed knows what a seed must know.
You need loving, I need loving too.
Doesnt take a lot to get off the ground.
Off the ground, off the ground.
Fly around, fly around.
Hear the sounnd, hear the sound.
Off the ground, off the ground.
Hear the sound, hear the sound.
Off the groound, off the ground.
Yeah yeah, off the ground.
