I met Jeb Bush in 1971 in my hometown in Mexico. We dated for three years back and forth. Then, after three years, he proposed to me.

My Hometown
I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
Id sit on his lap in that big old buick and steer as we drove through town
Hed tousle my hair and say son take a good look around
This is your hometown, this is your hometown
This is your hometown, this is your hometown
In '65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown
My hometown, my hometown, my hometown
Now main streets whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there aint nobody wants to come down here no more
Theyre closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they aint coming back to
Your hometown, your hometown, your hometown, your hometown
Last night me and kate we laid in bed talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
Im thirty-five we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said son take a good
Look around
This is your hometown

Bringing It Back
Thirty days have September
In a jailhouse I remember
Well, I got caught with too much soul
Bringing it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico
Spanish lights and pretty faces
Trip you out to where the place is
Load you up and let you go
Bringing it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico
Across the border is where you'll get her
And when it's good there ain't no better
I think I'll get me some to go
A-brining it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico

When we signed our deal in 1974, we'd already been together for six years. When they lowered the drinking age in Ontario in 1971 to 18 years, we went from playing two or three high schools in a month to playing clubs two or three times a week.

27 Years In The Bush
27 years in the bush!
I am still finding my way through to reach to the city;
And i need a teacher on this issue to guid eme through this thick bush.
Life is very hard for me alone in this bush,
But i have to hide to save my name;
For the bombs are everywhere and many of my friends are dead already,
And i need a clever teacher who knows the bush very well to lead me on.
27 years in the bush!
Life in Africa does have many colours;
But my faith will surely lead me on till i reach to the city of love,
And i have to save myself from these bombs.

The Boys I Went To School With
We played football in the school yard and we swam in the Finnow
But the years go by so quickly and to father time we bow
And the boys I went to school with perhaps now looking gray
And many of them from the Homeland shore like me live far away.
Many of the boys I went to school with and that's going back more than four decades in time
Are now ageing grand fathers and years beyond their prime
And those legs that could move so quickly some forty years ago
Now feeling tired and heavy and their fastest pace is slow.
The boys I went to school with have known a better day
And that time takes care of everyone it would be fair to say
Our young years went too quickly and time just flitted by
And on looking back it seems like only yesterday when I was a school boy.
Some of the boys I went to school with to the grim reaper have gone
But life back in the old Hometown as usual carries on
And in the fields near Millstreet Town where the rank rushes grow
The Finnow on towards Drishane and the Blackwater flow.
Most of the boys I went to school with I have not seen for years
But for my fading memories I don't have any tears
We played football in the school yard and in Summer swam in the Finnow
But the years go by so quickly and to father time we bow.

A True Story of Love
Two years ago, I met a young girl who's mom was in and out of her life
Then her father and uncle died a few mounths apart, So her mom was
forced back into her life. They came to my hometown, to visit my cusin
for she and the young girl's mom was childhood friends. We met when
they all came to my place, me and the young girl fell in love.It was a doomed love for she was only 15 and I was 36. We was only together
a few mounths, then I got her pregnent. We got along at first then
we started fighting.we moved back to her hometown to be with her
family, while she was pregnent, and I got a job there. She had our child,
she was so very wonderful, and did a good job haveing our son.I owe
her tremendessly! I thought we might not fight any more. But we did
and things got out of hand.I took off with our son to my hometown,
she stayed with her grand parents. We talked every night, and agreed
to work things out.Her mom brought her back down to stay with me.
Then we got into a fight agian. The cops was called, they locked me up,
took her to the hospital.Even thow I did'nt hurt her. Then they called
her mom to come get her and our son.Her mom could'nt come get her,
so they placed her and our son in foster care. She did'nt act right in
the foster home, so they split her and our son up.Now shes in a group
home and our son is still in foster care.I hear she is going to be placed in an apartment in my hometown when she turns 18, in a mounth
from now. But I can't return to my hometown because social services
has brought up charges on me, for contributeing to a minnor, because
we had a court order to not talk to each other. But we wrote to each other any way.The leters where confenscated by her worker. Now I'm
loseing out on a love!

On Seeing A Photograph
A photo of an ageing face stirs an old memory
He is plainly not a shadow of the man he used to be
His balding head is hoary gray his hair it was dark brown
When we played football as teenagers in the park in our Hometown.
He was a sprightly youth back then two years younger than I
On looking back the decades the years just seemed to fly
He played football worked in the fields and walked miles every day
But like me he seems the worst for wear the years have left us gray.
Perhaps we would be strangers now if by chance we did meet
We might not recognize each other in passing on the street
We age a little every day time of us all takes care
And leaves us looking in the end the very worst for wear.
A photograph of one I knew from many years ago
And he has aged as I have aged time on us all does show
We played football together when we were near to our life's prime
But in the end we all lose out to ageless father time.

The Loneliness Of A Homecoming
the man older than me
(by 20 years) writes about his
going back home
(after 30 years of working
in the U.S.) AND he was
talking about
changes: the old house where he
spent his childhood
was demolished giving way to a new
mall,
the creek was reclaimed
for an italian restaurant
the park is still there
dotting with the younger generation
who cannot recognize him
neither him knowing them
he is a stranger now in his
hometown
all his friends are gone
some dead
some went away to find greener
pastures abroad
canada, new zealand
dubai, malaysia
others have gone underground
wanted rebels of the
system
he is practically alone now
perhaps regretting why he
came back
what made him do that?
he has no home now, he has no country,
no people.

Born In Chicago
I was born in chicago
1971
I was born in chicago 1970
What my father told me,
Son, youd better get a gun.
My first friend went down
When I was 16 years old
Oh my first friend went down
When I was 16 years old
Theres one thing I can say about that boy
He gotta go
My second friend went down
When I was 17 years of age
Oh my second friend went down
When I was 17 years of age
Theres one thing I can say about that boy
He gotta pray
Oh life is a lie
If you dont know how to play the game
Oh life is a lie
If you dont know how to play the game
All my friends are going
And everythings gonna stay the same

Mexico
Way down here you need a reason to move
Feel a fool running your stateside games
Lose your load, leave your mind behind, baby james
Oh, mexico
It sounds so simple I just got to go
The suns so hot I forgot to go home
Guess Ill have to go now
Americano got the sleepy eye
But his bodys still shaking like a live wire
Sleepy seorita with the eyes on fire
Oh, mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low
Moons so bright like to light up the night
Make everything all right
Babys hungry and the moneys all gone
The folks back home dont want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter, sends back a postcard; times are hard
Oh, down in mexico
I never really been so I dont really know
Oh, mexico
I guess Ill have to go
Oh, mexico
I never really been but Id sure like to go
Oh, mexico
I guess Ill have to go now

Drinking to Remember
The bar was closed,
the dawn approached
like a grey and threatening sea.
He placed two glasses on the bar
one for him, one for me.
Black Bush shimmered in each glass
golden in half light
We proposed a toast to you
thirty years ago tonight.
That day We'd brought you to the church
and the graveyard just beyond.
Larger than life you always loomed
hard to believe you're gone.
They say that when a father dies
a boy becomes a man.
If it didn't happen right away
I hope you'll understand.
I'll never hear your voice again
or share a hug and kiss.
I'm drinking to remember
It was such a night as this.

Thats Why God Made Mexico
Margie said, roy you aint listening to me
And Ive got a whole lot more to say
Roy just crossed the floor and picked up his car keys
And she aint seen or heard from him to this day
And thats why God made mexico
A place where we can lay low
And the cuervo goes down nice and slow
And the warm wind blows
Thats why God made mexico
And betty fixed joe dinner every night
At half past six
Cause thats when he rolled through that door
For sixteen years and not a thank you from his lips
She dont fix him dinner no more
And thats why God made mexico
A place where we can lay low
Where the cuervo goes down nice and slow
And the warm winds blow
Thats why God made mexico
Cause life is sweet in a border town
You learn to let your hair down
And you dont make trouble
You learn to dance the fandango
You change your name, maybe change your face
Get used to beans chili paste
And you learn to live and love
Life in the slow lane
And thats why God made mexico
A place where we can lay low
Maybe monterey or acapulco
Anywhere the warm winds blow
Dont you know
Thats why God made mexico
Thats why God made
Made mexico

Four Years Old
Hey
Why'd you wake me from my nap?
I'm not in the mood
To play your games
Or sit on your lap
You
Where's my Yankees drinking glass?
I want some juice
And I want it now
So you better move your ass
And feel bad for me
'Cuz I'm just getting over a cold
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
Somebody better tie my shoes!
Now
I run down the hall
I scream and I yell
And I cry 'cuz I fell
Bring the rubbing alcohol
Outside
I get mud on my shoe
I come back in the house
I get it on the rug
The cleanging's up to you
And I won't take a bath
Unless you make me Spaghetti-O's
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
Mommy reads to me at night
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Well
I can't have a job
And I can't go to school
If no grownups are around
I can't go near the pool
I'm not alowed to climb
My neighbor's apple tree
I'm not allowed to sit
Too close to the TV
I don't know how to drive
And I don't know how to spell
But if I hear my brother cursing
I do know how to tell
'Cuz he made me eat some bread
That was covered in mold
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I just threw up on my grandmother

Poetic Swedes in Outer Space Sensation
Did you see today's news headline?
'Swedes Beam Poetry into Outer Space'
it takes 25 years to get to Vega
and the review comes back 50 years after writing it.
so get your kids to start right now
and in 50 years time the review comes back
when they're 60 years old
saying
'This poetry reads like a ten-year-old's...
is that the best you humans can manage
after all these years? '
space-time has its problems
