When I was in Philadelphia during the Depression in 1930 or '31, I got a very sad job as a night watchman in a garage. The cars in the garage had been abandoned by their owners, since they had lost their jobs and couldn't keep up the payments.

How far to the next garage
Just as I stopped at a garage today
the car’s engine died,
as it was running
with the yellow light burning
and the last gasoline was gone.
I had no cash on me
and there was no card machine
and the auto bank
at the shop was broken
and I was told,
about an auto bank at the next garage.
I started walking
and found a black man
along the way.
How far to the next
garage I asked
and he replied,
just on the other side
of the bridge.
On the other side
of the bridge,
there was one more bridge
and on the other side
of it,
no garage could be seen
for two kilometres or more.
So I wondered while I walked along
with a plastic can in my hand
that if he really didn’t know
why did he lie,
or was the man
too afraid to be seen
as a fool
while the biggest fool
was I?

In The Garage
Ive got the dungeon masters guide
Ive got a 12-sided die
Ive got kitty pryde
And nightcrawler too
Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do
Ive got my favorite rock group kiss
Ive got ace frehley
Ive got peter criss
Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do
In the garage
I feel safe
No one cares about my ways
In the garage
Where I belong
No one hears me sing this song
In the garage
Ive got an electric guitar
I play my stupid song
I write these stupid words
And I love every one
Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do

The Depression of the 1930's
The depression of the 1930's was the time of my childhood days,
There were a lot of worries and hardships in many ways.
Whatever time people could spare, they would help each other out,
Bad times also came when there was a draught.
The depression of the 1930's our parents would help make quilts of all kinds,
They would work long hours, day and night, it was alot on their minds.
Fathers would work on the W.P.A. just to make ends meet,
Breaking stones was very hard work, some of them fell to their feet.
The depression of the 1930's there were problems about work, severe
winters and war,
People never know from day to day what may be in store,
There were children of all ages, sick with an illness,
Some of them passed away with the long nights of stillness.
The depression of the 1930's made it bad for all ages,
Work was scare, there was pay of low wages.
During the depression, we all learned how to survive,
A lot of people shared the hardships by showing love and being alive.
The depression of the 1930's will be in my heart for the rest of my life,
I, Margaret L. Hockenberry, now Margaret l. Rodkey lived in those hardships
of struggle and strife
My parents were loving and caring in every way,
They taught me to respect people and show them we care.

Collector
The collector
I was a collector of paper napkins, every day I used to go around
picking them up, they were usually smeared with human saliva
and scum fat of cheap food. I had twenty bags full in my garage,
I stored them there since I have no car but like to mention that
I have a garage. One morning when I entered to pick up the stick,
with a nail in the end, the one I picked napkins with, the sacks
had turned in to tired workmen resting after slaving long hours
in the factory of hell. I opened the garage door they were free to
go and I saw them vanishing into the morning glare. They had
done their duty no more was excepted of them. From now on
till rain came they were be free, dance with dust and leave and
disappear on their own accord when time was right... My garage
is empty now but the smell of sweat and struggle lingers with old
jokes repeated a hundred times in workmen’s canteen

Tell Me
You can't tell me
You can't tell me
You can't tell me anything
I love only me
I love only me
I've got the answer to everything
There's only me
to suggest what I do
I am the garage flower
I don't need to stare
'Cos I know everywhere
Well there's a place for me anywhere
Tell me tell me
You tell me anything
You can't tell
You won't tell
Me anything
Anything
I love only me
I love only me
I've got the answers to everything
I don't need to stare
'Cos I know everywhere
Well there's a place for me anywhere
Tell me tell me
You tell me anything
Tell me tell me
You can't tell us anything
You can't tell
You won't tell
Me anything
Anything
You can't

I Like My Toys
I have a trainset and a garage full of cars
And a soldier with a gun
My mother says I should have more resposibility
As Im nearly 31
I have a plane, I have a crane
That can lift up all my trains and all my cars
I have a boat that doesnt float
But a big machine that takes me to the stars
But my mother says I should get a job
Or my father she will tell
She says 16 years is a long enough rest
Though I say that Im not well
I have a trainset and a garage full of cars
And a soldier with a gun
My mother says shell break up all my toys and all my games
And shell say Im not her son
But your mother says you should get a job
Or your father she will tell
She says 16 years is a long enough rest
Though you say that youre not well
I had a plane, I had a crane
That could lift up all my trains and all my cars
I had a boat that couldnt float
So my machine and me are going to the stars

The Near-Accident 7.31.2008
Margaret Alice drove into a pole this morning,
didn’t realize the car was badly injured, then
as she tried to drive home, felt the full force
of the near-accident: The wheel alignment was
out, the right front wheel completely skew, the
car wouldn’t go, the car park attendant directed
to the wheel alignment garage where Manuel -
Manuel Lennon – checked the car –
It is busted madame, you have to drive it to another
garage, Margaret Alice hysterical – the kids are at
school, who will take care of them? – I cannot drive,
the car’s wheels are all skew, said Schalk Jordaan –
we’ll drive the car to the garage, Manuel in your
car, we’ll take you there; I called Caroline, she
went to fetch Nici and Tiaan, Celeste at the garage –
this will cost you madame; I smiled, yes it will,
But my kids are safe; here is Barbara and Lieb,
they’ll take me home; took the number and
details of Manuel and Schalk who drove my
broken car all the way to the garage, I was too
shaken and scared to drive my little lame duck;
they took care of me and my car, made sure I
had a lift before they left – how can I thank them?
They’ll never know how much they meant
To the lady with the broken car – but in this poem
I’ll let them know how much their help meant!

I've got two old Volvos, two old Subarus, and an old Ford Ranger. If you've got an old car, you've gotta have at least several old cars, 'cause one's always gonna be in the garage.
Warm-blooded Man's rusty Engine Warrrenty
'It could be replaced
Any part of this ridiculous engine,
But little expensive the original parts
And the other thing is you cannot
Keep in the garage all the time,
Being towed by the Authorized personnel.
Run as much as you can and at last,
At least we can dismantle the body for scrapped iron
Because the wooden Mahogany boxes are very expensive nowadays! '
The shrewd Proprietor of the Garage leaves a placard at the entrance.

Cars... Waiting in the sun(9/11/01)
Patiently waiting their owners,
the cars sit alone
Blue Mercedes, black ford,
red Dodge, grey Toyota
But for tonight these waiting cars,
will not be going home
No one gives it a thought,
nor cares an iota
Only two days later
does one give it a thought
That these cars waiting their owners,
and coated with dust
Would never be driven again
by their owners
Though waiting, patiently…
oblivious in trust
Waiting in bright sunlight,
where once there was shade
From the two majestic towers
that seemed to forever persist
Waiting in the lonely parking lot
for owners delayed
By the fact that their owners…
and the towers… no longer exist.

Punk Rock Princess
Maybe when the room is empty
Maybe when the bottles full
Maybe when the door gets broke down
Love can break in
Maybe when I'm done with thinking
Maybe you can think me whole
Maybe when I'm done with endings
This can begin...
If you could be my punk rock princess
I could be your garage band king
You could tell me why you just don't fit in
And how you're gonna be something
Maybe when you hair gets darker
Maybe when your eyes get wide
Maybe when the walls are smaller
There will be more space
Maybe when I'm not so tired
Maybe you could step inside
Maybe when I look for things that I can't replace...
If you could be my punk rock princess
I could be your garage band king
You could tell me why you just don't fit in
And how you're gonna be something
If I could be your first real heartache
I woudl do it over again
If you could be my punk rock princess
I would be your heroine
I never thought you'd last
I never dreamed you would
You watch your life go past
You wonder if you should
If you could be my punk rock princess
I could be your garage band king
You could tell me why you just don't fit in
And how you're gonna be something

Used Car Sales People
With the gift of the gab they would talk their way out of hell
These used car sales people they know how to sell
On their selling ability their jobs are at stake
The more cars they do sell the more commission they do make
On any deals they clinch they have never lost
And your trust on such people can come at a cost
The more cars they sell the more money they get paid
A hard job to succeed in the used car trade,
Shy and sensitive used car sales people one might say are rare
To sell one a car no effort they do spare
They have to sell cars or their boss them will fire
And other used car yard owners as car sales people them will not hire
The more cars they sell the greater is their pay
So to sell you a car they try every which way.

Wrong Side Story
Life was crazy after this story of love fail; bad things no always happen to bad people, they also happen to good people.
Beautiful family, two floor house and three cars on the garage, you see dad was a lawyer and mom a realtor, and one only daughter, everything was perfect no problems seem to affect this world, where three hearts make one.
But one day the sky became dark, dad lost his job and mom the same and the daughter couldn’t understand so she became broken hearted after the divorce and everything went down the drain.
Now dad is a drunk and mom let her few dollars go trough her nose and the daughter now is living on the wrong side of this story.

Cars Are Cars
Words & music by paul simon 1983
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Similarly made. similarly sold
In a motorcade. abandoned when theyre old
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Engine in the front. jack in the back
Wheels take the brunt. pinion and a rack
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
But people are strangers
They change with the curve
From time zone to time zone
As we can observe
They shut down their borders
And think theyre immune
They stand on their differences
And shoot at the moon
But cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Drive em on the left. drive em on the right
Susceptible to theft in the middle of the night
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
I once had a car
That was more like a home
I lived in it, loved in it
Polished its chrome
If some of my homes
Had been more like my car
I probably wouldnt have
Travelled this far
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world

Walking isn't a lost art -- one must, by some means, get to the garage.
Rescued by an Angel
Some time ago, we planned to go shopping in Duluth, Minnesota
We started out on the highway but the car radiator blew
We decided to drive the car back to our garage
Our son, Clancy, offered to drive it back
While I was sitting in the front passenger seat
I felt an invisible Angel gently pushing our car
He pushed it all the way into the garage
We were rescued by an Angel
Thank God for creating His Angels

Sweet Times Gone
I'm holding back from going to see him-
To take a cab to the sad part of town.
Afraid to add to a heart that's grieving
With all those memories hanging around.
We were shy and we liked it fine
Living in back of his pa's garage.
And, oh, that garage lit up like magic
when he picked up that old guitar.
Sweet times gone; they've gone on by.
To laugh and dream with friends;
It ends, and so we cry.
Sweet times gone so far away
Leaving whispers in the air-
Sad whispers here to stay.
I get tears near spilling over
Thinking back to long ago
Before he left with that old guitar
To sing to world he didn't know.

I Feel So Sub-prime
My next-door neighbor is gone
Two small U-haul trucks
Were parked in their driveway
When I got home Friday
The guy that owned the house
Before them
Was an ass
First thing he did
When he and his wife
Moved in was to convert
Their two car garage to
A kick-boxing studio
Our garage faces the street
Their's faces our property
One day I got home from work
Walking up to my door
I glanced to my left
It seemed as if someone else
Was walking too
At just about my pace
Then like Lucy and Harpo
If you remember that TV scene
From 'I Love...' we both
Stopped and stared at each other
The entire back wall of his garage
Was a glass mirror
Like a ballet studio Glass!
Without the class
His studio had been downtown
In a commercial building
I had read the magnetic signs
On the sides of his SUV
Now his studio faced my front yard
Heavy bag hanging there
All the space was needed
Washer and dryer? ? ?
The had been hooked up
Outside for Christ's sake
Under a tacked-on lean-to
To keep the rain out
This was only the start
Of a rocky relationship
Street parking was taken
By his clients 4 to 11 PM daily
Thursdays were better
That was youth night
Parents dropped them off
Picked them up
But not the wrappings
Plastic botles aluminum cans
And all the other garbage
The left behind
Planning Board Zoning enforcement
Building Inspector Code enforcement
Public Safety Sanitation Department
All equally useless
So when they sold the house
I was thrilled to say the least
No more cars and ski-boat tailers
Parked on his lawn
I never noticed when
Our new neighbors
Moved in
They were very quiet
Never talked to or even saw him
Saw she and their child
Once or twice and waved
Then came the cars
Five or six parked regularly
Didn't take me long to figure out
This new building code violation
The studio had become a dorm
Their sudden move out
After about two years
Was a foreclosure
I checked the county records
The teaser rate non-verif' loan
Got them in got them out
Even with renters they couldn't
Cover the bump in rate + taxes insurnace
It makes me feel sad
I never got to know them
To talk about plans to remove
My two large old maples
That I knew dropped
As many leaves
On ther side
As it did ours
I have no control over
Negative amortization loans
Falling real estate values
I could have helped with the leaves
