Because good writing in a TV cartoon is so rare, I think the animation on The Simpsons is often overlooked.

The humor is essentially dark for a cartoon and sophisticated. But at the same time, being a cartoon gives the writers more freedom than in a normal sitcom. It always pushes the line that, despite human failings, the Simpsons are really decent people.

Well, for one thing, the executives in charge at Cartoon Network are cartoon fans. I mean, these are people who grew up loving animation and loving cartoons, and the only difference between them and me is they don't know how to draw.

When The Simpsons came around, there really was nothing else like it on TV. It's hard to imagine, but when Fox first took the plunge with it, it was considered controversial to put animation on prime time.

The success of The Simpsons really opened doors. It showed that if you were working in animation you didn't necessarily have to be working in kids' television.

Cartoon World
(eric carmen/john wesley harding)
I like the colors
I like the way they move
Theyre all so brilliantly realized
They just could not be improved
I love the way the sex is so overt
I love the way the violence doesnt hurt
Its a cartoon world
Its exactly as it seems
And its bigger than life
And better than all your dreams
Its a cartoon world
Its a safer place to be
And its better than real
A perfect facsimile
Its a cartoon world
I like the things their saying
I like the way theyre said
I like to change the channels
While Im lying in my bed
From the commercial to the anchorman
Theyve done research on my attention span
Its a cartoon world
Its exactly as it seems
And its smaller than life
And better than all your dreams
Its a cartoon world
Its a safer place to be
And its better than real
And bigger than you and me
And the stars are brighter
Theyve got more charisma
And more style than you and me
I watch the news on tv
It doesnt mean a thing to me
Whats a little ethnic cleansing?
Thats the way its always been
I was excited when the war began
Now Ive got gameboy, Im a happy man
Its a cartoon world
Its exactly as it seems
And its bigger than life
And better than all your dreams
Its a cartoon world
Its a safer place to be
And its better than real
A perfect facsimile
Its a cartoon world
Its a cartoon world
Its a cartoon world
Its a cartoon world
Its a cartoon world
Its a cartoon world

Animation is different from other parts. Its language is the language of caricature. Our most difficult job was to develop the cartoon's unnatural but seemingly natural anatomy for humans and animals.

Suspended In Animation
Suspended in Animation
To be lifeless and still
Watch the world passing by
Dreaming Forever
In a world of in justice
To be suspended in animation
To care for all people
But unable to help them
Musing forever
In a world of prejudice
To be suspended in animation
To yearn ends to conflict
Though you cannot end it
Withdrawn forever
In a world of war
To be suspended in animation
To covet life
A vessel for your soul
A body and conscious
From where you can forge change
To wake to a cause
And help the human race
This is your fate
Don't stray from it
Or be suspended in animation

I Come Alive In Writing
I come alive in writing
Even if the writing means nothing to anyone else-
I come alive in writing
Even if I am totally deluding myself as to its value-
I come alive in writing
Even if at times while writing there is an underlying hopelessness and despair -
I come alive in writing
As if writing is what God has given me to do-
I come alive in writing
As if through it I can truly give to and help others-
I come alive in writing
As if life has meaning through it-
I come alive in writing
Even when I sense the writing is not good or great
As I would wish it to be.

It's a Cartoon
He revealed a cartoon of his birth.
Meant at a conference to be a joke.
Since there had been such a controversy,
If, indeed, he was qualified to lead!
And where he was born,
Had been the focus of 'certain' folks.
However,
Just to be sure those observing knew,
The cartoon was not real...
He thought it was in the best of interest,
To announce to those watching...
What they viewed,
Was in fact...
A cartoon.
And 'not' a real depiction!
'Comeon!
Seriously.
It isn't real.
It 'is' a cartoon.'
Yet...
There they sat.
Some questioning and unconvinced.
Since a few wanted to use it,
As a news broadcast exclusive...
To prove finally there was evidence.
'Honest.
It is a joke.
It isn't real.
The producers of it are in our presence.
And they will confirm what I say is true.'

The key of my inspiration…! ! ! !
I am just like a robot,
Whose key is inspiration?
From every good creation,
With always a new abbreviation,
And personification,
It should be a magical animation,
This becomes my key of animation,
It may or may mat include and force or friction,
But it include the right way and direction,
The person should have observation,
And also do correction,
It may include the process of addition,
Or I would directly find the way to elimination,
But this will give me new ray to my pat ion,
And always suggest me the right solution,
That will become the key of my inspiration.

It just seems like the whole, overall animation world is trying to go where maybe animation doesn't belong.
No one blames themselves if they don't understand a cartoon, as they might with a painting or ""real"" art; they simply think it's a bad cartoon.
