Negro music and culture are intrinsically improvisational, existential. Nothing is sacred. After a decade, a musical idea, no matter how innovative, is threatened.

I remember Tim telling me that he had an idea for a musical and he said to me that he was hoping that ABBA would be writing the music, which I thought was a pretty wild idea because they were obviously known very much as pop writers.

It's not so much that I got that idea at some point, it came up naturally because of the improvisational nature of the story I was telling.

In my mid 30's, after a decade or so of giving full time to the music thing and finding myself with about $10 in the bank and no assets other than my musical equipment, I realized I needed to get serious about making a living.

Back Seat Bus Culture
Back Seat Bus Culture,
Draws me towards it like khakis to a vulture.
And they don’t need no plead to indulge ya’
Coz these kids they got phones and ringtone clays to sculpture
They Press play; Say ‘We’re too tired of this silence
And be quiet while we let of our musical sirens
Coz all day we behave to grey faced, teacher Tyrants
No getting stoned, just ringtones, forget violence’.
Ok I have ears but these ‘musical sirens’?
Can I request that your breath speaks of Byron?
‘More street’ you say, then try Armitage, Simon
Coz they has idea’s but got a pen to apply them.
Thanks say the kids, your words taste like those Stella’s
While the girls lick their lips at their track suited fella’s
With all due respect we don’t mean to indulge ya,
But were onto some new stuff, it’s called Back Seat Bus Culture.

The Music
The Music is an outlet
The music is a living thing
The Music is everything
The music is heart and soul
The Music also has its toll
The music is a creature
The music takes time
No matter your life or rhyme
The music is variety
The music can also heal
No matter you calamity
The music is a way to be found
No matter the music’s sound.

What I want above all is to destroy the idea of culture. Culture is an alibi of imperialism. There is a Ministry of War. There is a Ministry of Culture. Therefore, culture is war.

The most important of my achievements, if you want to call them that, was that I successfully introduced mystical ideas into pop culture, I wanted to save our culture from the stupidity and the bigotry and the ignorance that threatened it.

The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas - uncertainty, progress, change - into crimes.

That Music Extraordinaire, Mozart
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Who from his tender days, played with desire
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
Sweet notes from his music he did impart
That captivated audience to admire
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Whose tones can set an emotion to start
With a charm to have their hearts raised on fire
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
With pleasant pace from his great style of art
Is such that shows he was such a live wire,
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Whose harmony when heard is nice and smart
Can cheerfully raise hearts to go much higher
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
Joy occurs from such wonders that does chart
In tremendous ways that truly inspire.
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Musical from the bottom of his heart.

We decided we didn't want to do a musical for TV because the idea of writing a musical that would be seen on television once seems insane.

But I'm not adverse to the idea of Torch Song as a musical. It would just be different. Because the play will always be there exactly as it was, and in a musical you could tell a lot of the story through songs.

Racism and the Culture Of Racism
We must be aware…..,
Of the Culture Of Racism….,
It’s a slur and a swear….,
The Culture Of Racism….! ! !
Can’t turn your back….,
On the Culture Of Racism….,
Or you’ll feel the whack…,
Of the Culture Of Racism….! ! !
It’s hard to believe….
The Culture Of Racism….,
That’s why we all grieve….,
The Culture Of Racism…! ! !
We must face the facts….,
On the Culture Of Racism ….! ! !
Cause we’ve seen the attacks…..,
Of the Culture Of Racism….,
It follows us all…,
The Culture Of Racism….,
But we must stand tall….,
Against the Culture Of Racism….! ! !
Can we control or stop it….,
As long as it’s been livin’….? ? ?
That’s the priceless question….,
On the Culture Of Racism…! ! !

A Deathless Music!
Music never dies!
There's music
For all occasions!
Music lives
By the noise of
Musical instruments!
Music flourishes
By the poetic lines
Of best poets!
Music for joy
Just as for grief
Lives with man!
Music consoles
Crying child
From birth on!
Music makes all
Slave of sweet sound
Called melody!
All love music
Intellectuals or cowboys
As in movies!
Music occupies
Till the end of life
Of all ever!

I start with the subject matter I want to write about. Then I make a musical base for that and create an atmosphere with the music. Once I've done that, the lyrics come last.
Culture Abyss
I recently with two high-school students conversed
And alarmingly learned they weren’t at all versed
In the musical heritage of our American nation
It was a sorrowful show of their culture isolation
It’s not that these kids were doltish or dumb
They were as a matter of fact bright as they come
After minutes with them, one couldn’t refute
Their learned mastery of the digital compute
They’re well schooled in kilo, giga and megabytes
Consumed with computers in utter delight
But the well rounded person, is one who stands tall
Who knows the tech-world is not the be and end-all
I’m distressed to be the sad news reporter
That these bright kids never heard of Mr. Cole Porter
An American icon of music and wit
It’s a short-fall of ours, I humbly submit
“Duke Ellington, ” they asked, “Who’s that dude”?
And Gershwin, forget about, they hadn’t a clue
That it’s not a requisite to be musically inclined
Is no excuse to be culturally blind
I was fearful so didn’t mention Mozart or Bach
Though I’m sure they knew about Rap and Hard Rock
We’ve a TV, Computer and I-Pod generation
Who have fallen victim to culture deprivation
They’re probably unacquainted with the likes of Van Gogh
Who’s accountable for their lack of exposure I really don’t know
Hopefully they’ll emerge from this culture abyss
There’s so much out there, they deserve not to miss

The stolen waves of music of love..
The eternal music of love that enters my ears,
Has no shape, but can be heard, a formless mare,
Travel through the air to hit my ear drum,
The Mind understands the music and the rhythm,
The hands beat the surface to count the frequency,
The legs start to take the steps in urgency,
The pirated notes are nowhere to be found,
The stolen waves are gone with the wind,
The gentle music still plays in the head,
The feelings travel from the heart to the head,
The pounding heart blackmails the fluid,
The threatened fluid runs to convey the message,
Musical notes yield the weapon to that passage,
The body is in the state of ecstasy,
The drum and the mind are in harmony.
