The Gershwin legacy is extraordinary because George Gershwin died in 1937, but his music is as fresh and vital today as when he originally created it.

The Man I Love
(g. gershwin/i. gershwin)
Someday hell come along
The man I love
And hell be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
Ill do my best to make him stay
Hell look at me and smile
Ill understand
Then in a little while
Hell take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both wont say a word
Maybe hell come sunday
Maybe monday, maybe not
Still Im sure hell come one day
Maybe tuesday will be
My good news day
Well built a little home
Just meant for two
From which Ill never roam
Oh, what would you
And so all else above
Im dreaming of the man I love

I Loves Ya Porgy
(george gershwin/ira gershwin/dubose heyward)
I loves ya porgy
Dont let him take me
Dont let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
Porgy, I wanna stay here
With you forever
I got my man
Someday, I know
Hes comin back to call me
Hes going to handle me and hold me
Its gonna be like dyin, porgy
But when he calls me
Ill have to go
I loves ya porgy
Dont let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here
With you forever
And ever, ever and ever
Ever and ever
Porgy, I got my man

Our Love Is Here To Stay
(g. gershwin/i. gershwin)
Its very clear, our love is here to stay
Not for one year, but forever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies, but in time they grow
(chorus)
But oh my dear, our love is here to stay
Not for one year but forever and a day
In time the rockies may crumble, gibralter may tumble, theyre only made of clay
But our love is here to stay
(chorus)
But our love is here
Our love is here
Our love is here to stay

I was always drawn to Broadway musicals, and obviously composers like Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlin and Porter were writing music that I found wildly impressive.

Unable To Suppress
Unable to suppress
my dreams while she'd undress,
nor easily dismiss
the memory of her kiss,
forget
her wet,
wild passionate embrace,
when I recall her face,
I put them in a poem
so other men may know them.
The lines 'nor easily dismiss/ the memory of her kiss, ' are Ira Gershwin's words to music of George.

I Loves You Porgy
(1935) ira gershwin, dubose heyward, george gershwin
I loves you, porgy,
Dont let him take me
Dont let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
And Ill be glad
Yes I loves you, porgy,
Dont let him take me
Dont let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I wants to stay here with you forever
Ive got my man
I loves you, porgy,
Dont let him take me
Dont let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
Ive got my man
Someday I know hes coming to call me
Hes going to handle me and hold me
So, it going to be like dying, porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know Ill have to go
I loves you, porgy,
Dont let him take me
Honey, dont let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
Ive got my man
