Battle Song

There's havoc on the staircase where the guests come streaming,
Shirt-fronts shining and tiaras gleaming,
Frail folk shuddering and stout folk steaming --
Steaming in the heat of the fray.
Midnight striking and the strife appalling,
Strong men staggering and weak men falling,
And deep in the heart of me a still voice calling:
'Make for the buffet while you may.

'Make for the buffet while you may, poor stranger,
Make for the buffet while you can;
There's hope for the stale there, strength for the frail there,
Drink for the thirsty man.
Thrust through the throng! Be obstreperous and strong!
Fight till your strength is sped.
Fight and prevail; do not falter, do not fail,
Make for the buffet and be fed!

'Make for the buffet and be fed, poor stranger,
Make for the buffet and be strong;
Dense is the press and the air is growing less,
Fierce is the fight and long.
Fierce is the fight and oppressive is the night,
Stern is the strife and fell;
Pale is your cheek; you are wan and you are weak;
Make for the buffet and be well!'

Painfully and wearily the hours are dragging,
Old men are falling now and young men flagging;
White ties weakening and stiff shirts sagging --
Sagging as the hours go by.
Consciousness is failing me and outlines merging,
Thunder in my ears as of sea-foam surging,
And deep in the heart of me a faint voice urging:
'Make for the buffet lest you die.

'Make for the buffet lest you die, poor stranger;
Make for the buffet while you can;
Fight your way through like a woman in a queue,
Fight like a jungle-man!
Batter the élite with your hands and your feet,
Butt them in the backs with your head:
Strike for your own! You are hungry and alone;
Make for the buffet and be fed.

'Make for the buffet and be fed, poor stranger,
Make for the buffet lest you die.
There's hope for stale there, strength for the frail there,
Drink for the throat that's dry.
Courage and strength will rewarded be at length;
Weight in the end will tell.
Up, then, and on! Are you weary? Are you wan?
Make for the buffet and be well,
Poor stranger!
Make for the buffet and be well,
Poor ranger!
Make for the buffet and be well!'

A Free Loader Gloats

A free loader gloats.
And I restrain myself from complaining.
A free loader gloats....
As if life is nothing but a buffet.

And as each experience I face,
I feel a need to earn my keep.
I feel a need to be accountable.
I feel a need to achieve,
A responsibility.

A free loader gloats.
And I restrain myself from complaining.
A free loader gloats....
As if life is nothing but a buffet.

And I sit with this free loader,
Wondering if there is a consciousness.
And not only do I learn that there is...
I witness the blisters on hands.
And enlarged knuckles on fists.

I've learned that this free loader,
No longer fights to resist...
To be who one is!
No matter who critiques,
With titles labelled to give!

A free loader gloats.
And I restrain myself from complaining.
A free loader gloats....
As if life is nothing but a buffet.

And to this free loader...
Life is what it is,
As it is when left to be!

This 'Event' Is Not Customized

If you do not like or enjoy,
What is being offered...
Stop returning to the buffet.
What has been dished,
Is it!
Your complaints,
Are not going to change...
The arrangement of the selections.

If you do not like or enjoy,
What is being offered...
Stop returning to the buffet.
Others have done it,
And have successfully moved on their way.
No one but you,
Has suggested to the cook...
What added ingredient to use,
To sweeten or suit a particular taste.

If what you perceive is not happening for you...
Do not wait to be force fed.
This 'event' is not customized,
For apologies served to render.
Not here!
Today...
Or on tomorrow's menu!

It's so difficult. Sometimes if I have dessert, I think, 'Well, I blew it.' That's something I need to work on and control. But still there's nothing like a buffet.

Dipped and Greasy

Dipped and greasy...
Fingers licked from overeating.
They're dipped and greasy,
From a gluttony treated.
And...
Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

Dipped and greasy...
Fingers licked from overeating.
They're dipped and greasy,
From a gluttony treated.
And...
Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

Many praying that the buffet will stay.
Many praying that they'll find another way,
To supply more condiments...
And remove the after dinner mints.

Dipped and greasy...
Fingers licked from overeating.
They're dipped and greasy,
From a gluttony treated.
And...
Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

Dipped and greasy...
Fingers licked from overeating.
They're dipped and greasy,
From a gluttony treated.
And...
Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

Dipped and greasy fingers licked...
Are slowly from us fading.
And those lips smacked,
Are begging for the buffet.
But a gluttony once loved...
Is slowly from us fading away.

Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

Dipped and greasy,
Are those days licked...
Fading away!

They once were licked with ease,
But those fingers have no buffet.

I did though at least expect him to correct the false statements he made when he was trying to protect the Presidency. Instead, he talked about it as though I had laid it all out there for the taking. I was the buffet and he just couldn't resist the dessert.

Goes Unseen

I feast on a buffet of knowledge
The truth sets me free
And because of it
I can set you free
The ignorant refuse to see
They don't support the cause
Instead they are the effect
And when infected
Stupidity is perfected
I hold the vaccine
Even though it goes unseen

Show Me Where This Greatness Is

I don't want to hear where it is,
Nor be shown just examples of it.
To sample as if offered on a buffet.

If there is a greatness to be had to experience...
Lead me where I can walk in the midst of it.
I am not into hype or false and hollow announcements.

Show me where this greatness is.
I want to be convinced,
That it is more than a wish or validated by pretense.

Love And Live To Win

1.
Love is not bull-fight
to tame the bull or be gored.
A love buff's great fall.

2.
Is our married life
a gladiatorial combat.
Both of us should win.

3.

But she gives iPad and pen.
Will her heart unlock?

the waves of youth buffet her.
But her heart decides.

Penny Pinched

Visitations of subservience...
They adorn their Sunday best and await.
A colonialized attachment excites.
And they do not bite the hand,
That feeds them from a buffet...
Of accepted identities they obey.
As they try to remain good boys and girls,
All their lives.
With a pride dignitized and churched!
Where they peek and perch to point and gossip.
And pray their well-being is kept penny pinched,
From hand-me-downs!

World War II Lessons That We're Still Fighting

Summer of 1966
I had been working
Since I turned eighteen
As an apprentice pressman

It was summertime in San Francisco
I got to work full time so in the Fall
I could afford to work part-time
And go to college

My dad had been
A newspaper pressman
Since he returned home
From WW II in the Pacific

He got me my job at the Chronicle
That was how you got union jobs
You had to know someone
Who was already working there

That's why no Blacks were in our union
None worked upstairs either
To report there were none
Working on the presses downstairs

My dad was only seventeen
When he and his buddies
Signed up for the Navy
Right after Pearl Harbor

His graduation was in North Carolina
Learning how to be a tail-gunner
Getting ready to ship out and find out
What the wide white line was for

Painted down the middle of the floor
Of the hall where the band played loud
While young men danced with women
Most would never see again

The local civilians thought
Concessions were being made
By even allowing them
In the building

But my dad saw firsthand
They knew their place
One side of the dance floor
Restrooms bar and buffet tables

Where for Whites Only
Sailors Waves nurses and
Local white females
Waiting to dance and be held

The other side of the line
Not to be crossed
Its restrooms bar and separate buffet
Were for the Blacks

They all danced
To the same music
Only careful not to cross
That wide white painted line

Summer of 1966
We danced in Golden Gate Park
Silly us - - - Did we think we had erased
That wide white dividing line

It's Parked Outside

What are those guys talking about?

'I have no clue!
Someone should tell them
Wearing costumes to class is rather childish!
Especially that one in that metallic, hooded suit!
What kind of fashion statement is that?
And you should see that 'thing' they got out of!
Go look.
It's parked outside!
Or...
Part of it is parked outside.
And don't look up...
The size of that, whatever it is,
Is tremendous!
How is your Arabic coming along? '

Not too bad.
But this Chinese is extremely difficult!
Did you enjoy the Mexican food we had last night?

'I decided I would try the Korean.
That African buffet was excellent also! '

060610E dining with friends

after we emptied our thoughts
we are tired and hungry for food
at far end of the hall a promise
an array of very delicious dishes
almost likes of las vegas buffet
awesome i could smell it already

we twiddle our thumbs in line
contemplating which is the best
me, i go for fresh tropical fruits
sea food is always a temptation
boiled blue crabs and fresh oysters
i can still taste the ocean pearls
