Sitting in a car on a rainy evening in Bhopal
Evening rain glistens on the road
As bread is bought and bananas are
Turned over for ripeness and less ripeness.
The rain is dancing on the car roof;
From the car the camera tries to catch
The wet sun on the leaves of the corner tree
Soon the wipers catch fever and quickly
We make our way in a sea of umbrellas.

Ripeness
With peace and rest
And wisdom sage,
Ripeness is best
Of every age.
With hands that fold
In pensive prayer,
For grave-yard mold
Prepare.
From fighting free
With fear forgot,
Let ripeness be,
Before the rot.
With heart of cheer
At eighty odd,
How man grows near
To God!
With passion spent
And life nigh run
Let us repent
The ill we've done.
And as we bless
With happy heart
Life's mellowness
--Depart.

You can tell the ripeness of a melon by its look.

It says nothing against the ripeness of a spirit that it has a few worms.

It Is I
i
that transforms
myself
it is
not i that create neither i
that destroys
it is i
that waits
my ripeness is never my
curse.

My aim is for ripeness of form. I want to make my forms so full, so juicy that one could add nothing more to them.

Skepticism is the chastity of the intellect, and it is shameful to surrender it too soon or to the first comer there is nobility in preserving it coolly and proudly through long youth, until at last, in the ripeness of instinct and discretion, it can be safely exchanged for fidelity and happiness.

The West is color. Its colors are animal rather than vegetable, the colors of earth and sunlight and ripeness.

Pretense
if you only cared
as i do, you could have
appreciated
my little pretenses
they are not the usual
inconveniences
they are the tickles
the taste of pickles
the scent of ripeness
the smoothness
of love
what delights us
we must say
no matter what
reality that hurts
what use?
time is too short
for truths that kill us
time lies within
our own points of view
now, ride in fantasy
come with me
for i am yours
this is pretense
this is happiness.

Stage is sanction of vision.
That majesty, that mango skin,
That ripeness, that grace in pose,
And that skill in vocal card
Eclipsed her age, and shaded
The spinster violinist,
Sitting beside her on the stage.
I enjoyed singer’s vision more
Than the fusion of music.
Other than a concert,
Where would you get a chance
To devour with eyes a woman blatantly,
So long a time and so at ease?

My Youth
Oh, my youth was hot and eager,
And my heart was burning, burning,
And the present joy seemed meagre,
Dwarfed by that perpetual yearning.
I was always madly asking
Ampler beauty, keener pleasure,
Had not wit enough for basking
In the sunshine, rich with leisure.
Now with ripeness of October
I have reasoned and reflected.
And I feed my soul, grown sober,
With the crumbs that I rejected.

Love
Love means to learn to look at yourself
The way one looks at distant things
For you are only one thing among many.
And whoever sees that way heals his heart,
Without knowing it, from various ills—
A bird and a tree say to him: Friend.
Then he wants to use himself and things
So that they stand in the glow of ripeness.
It doesn’t matter whether he knows what he serves:
Who serves best doesn’t always understand.

A Prediction....
as usual we know about it as
hills know its trees
as grass knows its hoppers
and soil
but we don't talk about it
we dislike storms
it is horrible to see uprooted trees
and blown away houses
we leave things as they are
there is no ripeness yet
but the way you withhold love
and hide second thoughts
very give the signal of the coming days
a desert shall produce its own sandstorm
you prepare the door
i too, keep the windows.

Coconut tree climber
Upward movements rhythmic,
With his legs kept
Within a ring of rope,
His life like.
Intuition his
Ripeness assured,
And falls down the livelihood
At the top of trees.
Just a slip
May end in all end,
But the practices
Rarely slip.
Hackneyed his
Ways are;
But honeyed and free
Under the calluses.
Morrows and yesterdays
He never climbs upon.
He hugs todays, green and yellow
Like the coconut tree leaves.

Gospel Truth
brother you must know
that your suffering today is inferior
very much inferior
to the glory that is promised
in the ripeness of your time
feel the eager longing for the
coming of that time
for soon brother
you shall be freed from the decay of your
self-created depression
for quite long
we have groaned for that redemption
that spirit within
that hope for the coming.

For Molly
You-the purest pleasure
of my life,
the split pit
that proves
the ripeness of the fruit,
the unbroken center
of my broken hopes-
O little one,
making you
has centered my lopsided life
so that if I know
a happiness
that reason never taught,
it is because of your small
unreasonably wrigglish
limbs.
Daughter, little bean,
sprout, sproutlet, smallest
girleen,
just saying your name
makes me grin.
I used to hate the word Mother,
found it obscene,
& now I love it
since that is me
to you.

Unharvested
A scent of ripeness from over a wall.
And come to leave the routine road
And look for what had made me stall,
There sure enough was an apple tree
That had eased itself of its summer load,
And of all but its trivial foliage free,
Now breathed as light as a lady's fan.
For there had been an apple fall
As complete as the apple had given man.
The ground was one circle of solid red.
May something go always unharvested!
May much stay out of our stated plan,
Apples or something forgotten and left,
So smelling their sweetness would be no theft.

The World Waits For You...
saturday, there are so many choices
the hammock lies waiting
swaying,
the green fields have trees
teeming with the ripeness of their fruits
they lack harvesters
the pathways are like open arms
the junctions are like vendors calling for
more customers
the clouds are umbrellas opening
without hands to hold them
the rains are planning to create
more rivers
the valleys are giving in to the
clarity of the plains
all for you.
Still asleep on last night's
hangover from those
wild merry-go-rounds.

A Poem Should Not Be Written-When One Is Waiting For A Bus
A POEM SHOULD NOT BE WRITTEN-WHEN ONE IS WAITING FOR A BUS
A poem should not be written
When one is waiting for a bus
And simply trying to pass the time.
It should be written in solitude
After deep reflection
Ripeness as all
The falling fruit-
But this poem
Knows no ‘should’-
Knows only the long desperation
Of the happy holiday day-
Writing the words down quietly-
As if anything and everything I have to say
Is really
The poem I have religiously long waited for.
