Sugar Mountain

Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.
Its so noisy at the fair
But all your friends are there
And the candy floss you had
And your mother and your dad.
Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.
Theres a girl just down the aisle,
Oh, to turn and see her smile.
You can hear the words she wrote
As you read the hidden note.
Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.
Now youre underneath the stairs
And youre givin back some glares
To the people who you met
And its your first cigarette.
Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.
Now you say youre leavin home
cause you want to be alone.
Aint it funny how you feel
When youre findin out its real?
Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.
Oh, to live on sugar mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You cant be twenty on sugar mountain
Though youre thinking that youre leaving there too soon,
Youre leaving there too soon.

Carnival In Kenora

Twinkle, twinkle what a pity
All alone on such a pretty night
With enchantment on your side.
Popcorn, popcorn, cotton candy,
Soft voice whispers,
This can all be right
If youll come and share a ride.
Carnival in kenora!
I let him take me for a ride
On a giant ferris wheel.
Up in the neon sky
Or far from the barkers cry
One kiss can sometimes
Make you feel like a
Spinning ferris wheel.
All the tents are taken down now;
All thats left is scuffled ground now;
Still the magic echoes in the sand.
Popcorn, popcorn, cotton candy,
Now a stranger takes my hand,
We smile and the magic understands.
Carnival in kenora!
I let him take me for a ride
On a giant ferris wheel.
Up in the neon sky
Or far from the barkers cry
One kiss can sometimes
Make you feel like a
Spinning ferris wheel

Harlem In Havana

At the far end of the midway
By the double ferris wheel
Theres a band that plays so snakey
You cant help how you feel
Emmie mae ran away
With a man as dark as night
You can see him, if you go there
Second trumpet to the right
They play night train
So snakey
Black girls dancing
Long and lanky
Barkers barking
Step right up, folks!
The show is about to begin
Its harlem in havana time
Step right in!
Silver spangles
See em dangle in the farm boys eyes
Hootchie kootchie
Auntie ruthie wouldve cried
If she knew we were on the inside.
When emmie mae ran away
She came back a bottle blonde
God! the gossips had a gourmet feast
Chomping on how she was born
But miracle of miracles
Cuz we were underage
She got us nearly front row seats
To the right side of the stage
See that tall girl?
Thats a man
That one, too
Big yellow feather fan
Barkers barking
Step right up, folks!
The show is about to begin
Its harlem in havana time
Step right in!
Silver spangles
See em dangle in the farm boys eyes
Hootchie kootchie
Auntie ruthie wouldve died
If she knew we were on the inside.

Aching Eyes And Neck Pains

aching eyes and
back and neck pains, they do not really matter
once i face this monitor

i assume i have many things to say
after a day's work. I TAKE pride about the
matters unsaid. I take note of the words
kept hidden inside my hair.They want
to jump and assume the shape of some
fleas.BITERS. bitter biters, for they were made
to be silent as we keep on doing
our own bread and butter thing

my eyes are aching. I feel the pain on my neck.
there is this burden, and this burden is the burden
of a writer, a poet, and it keeps on saying

write me, write me now: about a girl whose
father betrayed her, about a man whose fortune
is stolen in the blink of an eye

he died.she was thrown in the river
and the fish ate her in tiny pieces.

there is this little boy who imitated my actions
and he was laughing and i was laughing too,

i never thought that my hands are as clumsy as his
or his words too disappointing

the world is telling me: it is enough
too much of you is already suffocating

it is telling me that i must quit
but how can i? there is this little boy that keeps
on taunting me

to play again along the sands of the shore
and make my new sandcastles

it is not too dark yet, and he says it is still time
there is still time to play....

i get out of the car. It is raining. I look at the sky.
Drink some rain. I get wet.

It is not enough. It is never enough. There is still this little boy
in me. His eyes are always in wonder.

and so the poems keep on coming.
I close the car. I look at the trees.

How green are these trees! Greener than green.
How blue are the clouds! Bluer than blue.

And i really like all that i see.

This little child in me. Giggling.

Three Ankle Biters And A Shotgun

Don’t come to my door late at night
Unless your ready for a vicious fight
Got a security system, better than most
Three ankle biters and a shotgun will be your host

Not going to let anyone take my stuff
If they tried, the going could get rough
Your going to get some growls and barks as a warning
When I get that twelve gauge out, crooks a mourning

So better rob another house, if you’re a thief
If you come over here, the life you live might be brief
I’m not a violent person, I’m as sweet as can be
But don’t come here for a stealing spree!

Song of the City

Sirens howl in the street & the cafe,
Trying to pull you either way,
Like carnival barkers
Peddling heart ache & tragedy

The northwest wind whips around the corners,
Cruel & bitter, lashing the faces of us street toughs
Under the orange street lamps

It never grows fully dark here
The sky only gains a certain colour

I draw my coat up tight around my shoulders,
Shrugging, like a crow nestling itself beneath its dark wing

Never have I felt more cold
More alone
More alive

To Hell or Connacht

Once upon a time
in a nasty little war
Cromwell came to Ireland
like a blight upon our shore.

He waged war upon my people
in a genocidal style
but some revisionists might argue
he was merciful and mild.

At Drogheda he killed thousands,
what a slaughter that place saw,
at the hands of 'Christian' soldiers-
surely righteous was their cause.

Then, when the war was over
and all our blood was spent
the Gaels, who used to own the land,
all wound up paying rent

' To Hell or Connacht' is a phrase
sound biters did invent
I don't know if he uttered it
but its surely what he meant!

Pulling Habits Out of Rats

I’m no genie or Houdini,
I’m The Famous Rob Kabob.
Hocus-pocus I must focus,
I must think to do my job.
First I get in this position,
While the rat sits very still.
I’m part Shrink and part Magician,
And it takes a secret skill.
People ask, 'Rob what’s your job? '
But they figure I am joking,
When I tell them I help rats
To stop drinking and stop smoking.
Some rats are such nail-biters,
Still others tend to overeat.
I wave my magic wand 3 times,
And PRESTO my work is complete.
I no longer miss my old job,
Pulling RABBITS out of HATS.
I’m The Famous Rob Kabob,
I pull HABITS out of RATS!

Whip

Great Great Great Great
is thy work
The fortune hunter
your uninterrupted lamp
has
torch light out the
parasite in their closet
like an erosion that called
the black pot of sacrifice of the perpetrator
Great Great Great Great
is thy work
The fervent farmer
your crude instrument
has
uprooted the unwanted ornament
in the vineyard
like locus waiting the planter

Great Great Great Great
is thy work
The lean steward
you never sleep nor slumber
in the quest of monitoring the
offender in the field like Nigeria
EFCC punching out the beautiful criminals

Great Great Great Great
is thy work
The no nonsense headmaster
with this
masquerade Cain whipping
the deaf prefect in the school of moral

The whip that caution the senior wife
is at the top of the roof for
YOU

One Left Shoe

Under the spotlight, the neon kiss
Carnival barkers preen & twist
Three for a quarter, 2 for a dime
Broken hearts general store--open all the time
Chorus:
Im lonely without you
Just like one left shoe
Im lonely without you
Tennis shoes strung across a telephone wire
The sun sneaks up on my empire
Tent for your castle with a bubblegum crown
Me & my minions make the rounds
Im lonely without you
Just like one left shoe
Im lonely without you
Bridge:
Im a little cocoon just blooming for you
I draw a deep breath, the day is new
Im brave, Im a hero, the worlds bright & clear
But my insides shrivel when youre not here
Newspaper pile on my front porch
The sun is winding up, its starting to scorch
The air is dust & lungs are hot
I keep making love to what is not
Im lonely without you
Just like one left shoe
Im lonely without you

Who Is Truly Great?

Great is one who humbles oneself;
Great is one who accomplishes without expectations;
Great is one who labors for others’ welfare;
Great is one who struggles for a noble cause;
Great is one who gives his life for his Maker’s sake;
Great is one who sacrifices his precious life for truth’s sake;
Great is one who takes the road least taken;
Great is one who climbs life’s steep hills;
Great is one who treads dangerous paths for mankind’s progress;
Great is one who risks his life unduly to save others’ lives;
Great is one who although born or made handicapped does extra-ordinary feats;
Great is one who scales heights of achievements rarely done by others;
Great is one who toils in sleep-hours too for mankind’s upliftment;
Great is one who racks his brain to find a cure for a crippling disease;
Great is one who shuns selfishness for the cause of his poorer brethren;
Great is one who dies so that others can live in peace;
Great is one who lives not for oneself but others;
Great is one who loves and forgives his worst foe;
Great is one who leads life in accordance with the Word of God!

How Great

Like a mother mine was delighted she gave birth
It feels as great as we felt coming to live on earth
Great as we thought it was when joining school
Highly respectable as we perceived our graduation
with great love of money for love and infatuation
Much as we thought money made people great

Then the job made great impact on love perception
We were held higher by those thinking we were great
Our mind made us take a great pride in education
With little regards to the good great book we forgot
For great eloquence in language for communication
For great crowds of ladies and gentlemen we fought
The more lovers one has, the easier it was to feel great

How great was the lavish and satisfaction
How great the diversity and the depth we experienced
How great the comfort to feel the hardness and softness
How great on earth does it taste fornication?
How great when we fear not for our Godlessness
How great when we die is going to be our tribulation?

No Longer Free

angry people standing up,
marching, joining hands....
the taste of the lie,

gone bitter.
unholy wars,
corporate greed....

slavery rears its ugly head,
taking different forms.
greed takes the future,

and barters for oil.
the hands of the masses,
empty and hungry!

those who stood silent
and took it all without a whimper,
now have had enough!

while the barkers yell,
it's un-American, it's wrong!
counting back change

into the beggars cups.
the threat of the new wave
of Mccarthyism fear

beats protestors with billy clubs,
and gases young girls!
and the anger grows,

the anger grows....
the calloused hands of
working men and women,

clenched tight, preparing
for the fight... the last stand
of liberty in this land....

no longer free!

Great Grandma

Great Grandma married Great Grandpa
poor Irish girl and poor Indian man
Great Grandma
used to get beat by Great Grandpa's mom
Great Great Grandma
because Great Great Grandma only spoke an Indian
language and not English.
She got hit by a train.
Lots of us Indians got hit by trains in one way
or another, but this was
literal and not metaphor.
