Sunday Night in Santa Rosa
The carnival is over. The high tents,
the palaces of light, are folded flat
and trucked away. A three-time loser yanks
the Wheel of Fortune off the wall. Mice
pick through the garbage by the popcorn stand.
A drunken giant falls asleep beside
the juggler, and the Dog-Faced Boy sneaks off
to join the Serpent Lady for the night.
Wind sweeps ticket stubs along the walk.
The Dead Man loads his coffin on a truck.
Off in a trailer by the parking lot
the radio predicts tomorrow's weather

A steamin place called palisades park
Turned around to see what I could see

Wild Billys Circus Story
The machinist climbs his ferris wheel like a brave and the fire-eaters lyin in a pool of sweat victim of the heatwave,
Behind the tent the hired hand tightens his legs on the sword swallowers blade,
Circus towns on the shortwave
Well the runway lies ahead like a great false dawn,
Fat lady, big mama, missy bimbo sits in her chair and yawns,
And the man-beast lies in his cage sniffin popcorn and the midget licks his fingers and suffers missy bimbos scorn
Circus towns been born.
And a press roll drummer go, ballerina to-and-fro cartwheelin up on that tightrope,
With a cannon blast, lightin flash, movin fast through the tent, mars bent,
Hes gonna miss his fall, oh God save the human cannonball.
And the flying zambinis watch marguarita do her neck twist,
And the ringmaster gets the crowd to count along: 95, 96, 97.
A ragged suitcase in his hand, he steals silently away from the circus grounds,

A Near-Drowning
Once, when I was a kid, I nearly drowned.
The sand of Old Orchard Beach was in-
dustrially pure, each grain
slipperysmooth and round.
Here, like a Ferris-wheel on its side,
to calliope strains, a horsey carousal
cranked itself dutifully 'round and around;
There, like a carousal on end,
while a Ferris-wheel fenced the horizon-
so far off none could hear
the wails of its coming-over-the-top riders.
its spokes shot glints of silver
toward the red perimeter. So clean, the air
could fry babies in minutes-
fresh and very Maine. Colors were brighter, then.
I stood at the shifting shoreline
having turned my backside to the surf
(which you should probably never do)
to watch the driftwood-colored seagulls
hover quaveringly in place,
when, from behind a frigid wave knocked me flat,
spinning and numbing me like the beginning
part of Blindman's Bluff.*
Certain I was done,
it began slowly to drag me seaward
clenched in the foaming
fingers of its sizzling grip.
'Shucks', I thought, 'I'm gone.'
But, never say 'never' I suppose.
Next moment, I felt the firm hand of my father
on my arm, contending with the wave,
warning it 'not so fast, '
and strong arms hoisting me skyward,
setting me, sputtering, on my feet.
Everything was suddenly shivery,
and swaddled in spotless terry.
We never mentioned it again, the near-drowning, thus,
watchfully friendly with the sea I remained.
In a house on stilts that night
I sniffed and ate peanut-butter and bacon sandwiches on toast-
but my snot was unusually salty for a week.

They have the big ferris wheel and we've been out of town for two months, so he just was like, 'Mommy I want to go to Toys R Us and I don't care if you have a movie coming out and all that.' He was just being a kid. But I had to allow him to have that moment.
I did put on weight for the last half of the film, but the Ferris wheel scene was shot with a harness on me so that if I fell I wouldn't fall all the way.
