Recuerdo

We were very tired, we were very merry--
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable--
But we looked into a fire, we leaned across a table,
We lay on a hilltop underneath the moon;
And the whistles kept blowing, and the dawn came soon.

We were very tired, we were very merry--
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry,
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold.

We were very tired, we were very merry,
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry,
We hailed "Good morrow, mother!" to a shawl-covered head,
And bought a morning paper, which neither of us read;
And she wept, "God bless you!" for the apples and pears,
And we gave her all our money but our subway fares.
--EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY, in Poetry.

I was very sad, I was very solemn--
I had worked all day grinding out a column.
I came back from dinner at half-past seven,
And I couldn't think of anything till quarter to eleven;
And then I red "Recuerdo," by Miss Millay,
And I said, "I'll bet a nickel I can write that way."

I was very sad, I was very solemn--
I had worked all day whittling out a column.
I said, "I'll bet a nickel I can chirp such a chant,"
And Mr. Geoffrey Parsons said, "I'll bet you can't."
I bit a chunk of chocolate and found it sweet,
And I listened to the trucking on Frankfort Street.

I was very sad, I was very solemn--
I had worked all day fooling with a column.
I got as far as this and took my verses in
To Mr. Geoffrey Parsons, who said, "Kid, you win."
And--not not that I imagine that anyone'll care--
I blew that jitney on a subway fare.

A Subway Called You

Here we are
We drift like gas
On someone elses bed
I pay high you know
Here we are
How old are you
Its just a job to me
Here the ladies always ring twice
Thought youd slip away tonight with me
In a subway I called you
Hello you no more this talk of
my boys will be yours
No more i
This conversation drains
My patience dry.
Here the business always rings twice
No relaxing for the boys tonight
In a subway I called you
Here the tension always slows twice
Shed one tear its just routine for now
In a subway I called you

Down On The Corner (feat. Lance Diamond)

Early on the evening, just about suppertime
Over by the courthouse, they're startin' to unwind
Poor kids on the corner tryin' to bring you up
Willie picks a tune out and he knows they gonna start
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willie and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel tap your feet
Johnny hits the washboard, people just gotta smile
Robby thumbs a gut-bass and solos for a while
Poor boy brings the rhythm on his kalamazoo
And Willie goes into a dance doubles on kazoo, hey!
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willie and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel tap your feet
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willie and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel tap your feet
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willie and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel tap your feet
You don't need a penny just to hang around
But if you got a nickel won't ya lay your money down
Over on the corner there's a happy noise
People come from all around to watch the magic boy
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willie and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel tap your feet
[fade out

Lucy In The Subway

Lucy sells her flowers for a quarter apiece
She wound up on the streets
She could not pay her lease
She used to want to save the world
But nothing to her matters now
She lays bout the subway station
Clad in dirty tatters now
Lucys in the subway with daffodils
She lost all her diamonds
And she sold all her pills
Shes been around the block
But shes had too many thrills
Lucys in the subway with daffodils
Lucy holds a dixie cup
Of sixty cents in change
And if she looks you in the eye
You see that shes deranged
She flew too near the sun
And fried her fragile wings
But to her faithful whisky bottle she clings
Lucys in the subway with daffodils
She lost all her diamonds
And she sold all her pills
Shes been around the block
But shes had too many thrills
Lucys in the subway with daffodils

Nickel Romeo

Hey sugar I had that dream again
I saw you in your red crushed velvet suit
Rolling on my feather bed
A cheshire cat in yellow beatle boots
(but) whos that stranger lying in your arms
Her fingers running down your tattooed chest
Valentinos cranking up the charm
And its coming like a freight train
These pictures in my head
Hey mister nickel romeo
Everybody knows your name
Hey, hey mister
Tell me mister, whats your game?
Falling, yes she will fall
Your latest victim bites her lip and sighs
Shes do these nasty things for you
Insinuating kisses on the sly
Oh I remember how you get your kicks
Preying on the innocent at night
Strange desperation-you gotta cop that fix
Making every little girl is keeping you alive
Hey mister nickel romeo
Everybody knows your name
Hey hey mister
Tell me mister, whats your game
Oh nickel romeo you got no shame
Hey mister nickel romeo
Everybody knows your name
Hey hey mister
Tell me mister, whats your game?
Hey mister nickel romeo
Everybody knows your name
Hey hey mister
Youre the master of this game
Because you got no shame
I think Im going insane
And youre to blame...

The Battle

Dames should be doomed to dungeons
Who masticate raw onions.

She was the cuddly kind of Miss
A man can love to death;
But when I sought to steal a kiss
I wilted from a breath
With onion odour so intense
I lost my loving sense.

Yet she was ever in my thought
Like some exotic flower,
And so a garlic bulb I bought
And chewed it by the hour;
Then when we met I thrilled to see
'Twas she who shrank from me.

So breath to breath we battled there,
To dominate each other;
And though her onions odious were,
My garlic was a smother;
Till loth I said: 'If we would kiss
Let's call an armistice.

'Now we have proved that we are true
To our opinions,
My garlic I'll give up if you
Give up your onions.'
And so next day with honey sips
How sweet her lips!

Oil And Garlic And Peanuts

past aroma of
garlic sticking to the oil
to crunchy peanuts

on that tryst
under the acacia trees
on a line of electric lamp posts
we watch the sea

the salty winds touch our faces
we were pure
we only want some company
we had nothing to do

it was the last day
of the garlic flavored peanuts
and then we parted

we were like the winds of the sea
on a short stay
at the boulevard
cooling off some broken dreams

Drive time

Double nickel in the rear view mirror

Lane lines ahead of me converging fast

keep eyes peeled on the road at all times-

not the scenery as it goes past.

Double Nickel in the rear view mirror

Lane lines ahead of me converging fast

A.M radio my true companion

A bunch of ditto heads that make me laugh

Double Nickel in the rear view mirror

At or past my apogee

each exit sign goes by more quickly

There’s an exit up ahead for me.

Nickel Dreams

(mac mcnally, donny lowery)
A little girls dream world with ribbons and long curls
Reflections of yesterdays past
Now headlines and foot lights
The hours of long nights keep everything
Moving so fast
Its taken a long time
And shes walked a thin line
The fame and fortune arrived
She kept on striving
Way of surviving
Till part of those dreams came alive
Chorus:
And she wishes she looks like
They tell her she looks like all the time
What shed give just to feel like
She tells them shes feeling
Just fine
All that money she makes every night
Aint as much as it seems
A dollar a wrinkle and less then a nickel a dream
Her heart may be breaking
But she keeps on taking
What she thought she wanted way back when
Its too late to change her
Theres always a stranger
To tell her shes someone again
Repeat chorus
Nickel a dream
Nickel dreams

Danceway

Be my tv guide in between the stations.
Be my satellite: secret information.
Stairway going one way to the subway.
Waiting for the train.
Take it to the runway.
Journal in the square, fingers in the hairdo.
England in the air, beatle in the bathroom.
Highway going one way or another.
Lets get in the car.
Brooklyn queens expressway.
Turning in the light, singing to the doorway.
Standing on the side, listen to the subway.
(no one understands you, upperhands you, lonely valentine.
Bell and book and candle.)

Fait accompli

the plane took off
i realized i did not like the aisle seat
i transferred to the window seat
and the stewardess said
'excuse me, sir! ' trying to stop me
for doing so,
i pretended i heard no one
moved as fast a i can towards the window seat
fastened my seat belt
and put my head
well rested on the
beside the window

below the clouds flew
past me
on a deceiving speed
the mountains spread
benumbing

Melodie's Ride Home

Melodie to loves to hear the saxophone
she listens to it on her way home.
Sitting next to the sax player on the subway
she is happy inside and is very gay.
She does not want to leave at all
even though she is quite small.
Humans across from her on the other side
look at her in amazement
they are shocked inside.
That doesn't bother Melodie for she
is filled with pride—
Listening to lovely music on her subway ride.

Once Upon A Time In America

It was a cold January morning,
all around looked a bit boring.
In Washington’s subway
was the beginning of the ordinary day.
Everyone was in a hurry,
they didn’t want to worry
and didn’t pay attention
to the man I would like here to mention.
The passer-bys didn’t clap
to the man wearing jeans and baseball cap.
They all looked at the clock,
so that to get in time for their work.
It was not a tradition
to listen to a street musician.
That man played his violin.
He didn’t try to win.
He was in his own skin.
Would you like to know?
It was certainly not a show.
But…he played
the most beautiful works of art,
the best musical compositions.
Those sounds could touch anyone’s heart
if they were played in another condition.
Now, I would like to tell.
That man was Joshua Bell,
the famous American violinist.
He didn’t persist on subway’s stage,
He was not in a rage for earning 32 dollars,
playing only 45 minutes.
For a street player it’s a good salary,
considering the USA country.
But…you know what?
There is something I forgot.
Two days before
His salary was insanely more.
For the concert in Boston it was a million
because he was really brilliant.
But…in Washington’s subway
Everyone went away
without hearing his play.
Here is my comment.
It was an experiment
suggested by Washington Post.
I don’t know it’s cost
but I know quite well
we do not hear even the church bell.
We are blind and deaf
And it’s the biggest grief.
One man from that subway’s crowd had said:
He played too loud.
