Frank Herbert

Think you of the fact that a deaf person cannot hear. Then, what deafness may we not all possess? What senses do we lack that we cannot see and cannot hear another world all around us?

Guilty Deafness

You look like you've got something to say
It must be bad if you've come all this way

But I don't wanna hear it I've got guilty deafness
I couldn't take all that from you
The last time you came here you left me breathless
I couldn't take much more of you

You look like you've found something thats big
The kind that the papers would lose on what they'd bid

But they don't wanna hear it they've got guilty deafness
They wouldn't take all that from you
The last time you paid them you made them restless
They couldn't take no not from you

I've got her on one side

On His Deafness

'Speak up - no need to shout -I'm not THAT deaf! '
- do I have real reason to complain,
if years of partial listening have brought
now partial hearing in their fateful train?

O Milton - isn't it curious: the blind
evoke our instant feelings of compassion -
while deafness calls some idiot state to mind,
evoking, far from pity - irritation?

Those saintly mystics would just praise their God
that He, to speed their simple saintliness,
brings outer deafness so that inner Word
in cloistered silence, bring a greater bliss...

So may I bear affliction in good part
and hope to hear the louder in the heart.

Ernst Mach

The plain man is familiar with blindness and deafness, and knows from his everyday experience that the look of things is influenced by his senses; but it never occurs to him to regard the whole world as the creation of his senses.

But people who think they can project themselves into deafness are mistaken because you can't. And I'm not talking about imagining what a deaf person's whole life is like I even mean just realizing what it is like for an instant.

Silent

I hear no voices inside my head.
I hear no echoes in the wind.
Everything is silent.

I now know how the deaf must feel.
A world with no sound.
Words that don't speak.
Silent.

Well I guess it's wrong of me
to compare my writer's block
to the deaf, but that how I
feel.

Lost, and frustrated.
Seeing lips move but unable hear the words.
I'm a poet who wants to speak but no sound
do I hear.
Silent!

Clock Striking

Did I hear the church-clock a few minutes ago,
I was asked, and I answered, I hardly did know,
But I thought that I heard it strike three.
Said my friend then, 'The blessings we always possess
We know not the want of, and prize them the less;
The church-clock was no new sound to thee.

'A young woman, afflicted with deafness a year,
By that sound you scarce heard, first perceived she could hear;
I was near her, and saw the girl start
With such exquisite wonder, such feelings of pride,
A happiness almost to terror allied,
She showed the sound went to her heart.'

Deep Silences Like Thunderbolts Were Hurled

Deep silences like thunderbolts were hurled
through the noiseless deafness of my quiet world.
These sounds were generated from within
for my ears were not able to take sounds in.

From the noisy world no sound could be heard
no clashing of drums or song of a bird.
My eyes could see your lips talking to me
but what you said remained a mystery.

Cut off from the noisy world around
and from its vast cacophony of sound.
I could not hear a dog bark or baby cry,
the rustling wind or river rippling by.

Then there down by the Sea of Galilee
they begged Jesus to lay his hands on me.
I was deaf and dumb and could hardly talk
but Jesus took me aside for a walk.

He reached out touching my tongue and my ear
cried out 'Ephphatha' and then I could hear.
My tongue was loosened and then I could speak
now I'm no longer an outcast or freak.

Overwhelmed and amazed at everything
I heard all the people His praises sing.
For although Jesus told them not to tell
they told everyone He'd done all things well.

Under Your Breath

Hangin' in the underground
Before a train back out of town
Away from you
All the lights that disappear
In the tunnels way down here
It's quite a view
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
Then I wouldn't hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
Locked away in your room
On the phone with someone who
She thinks out loud
Thought she found the right to leave
Think of the things you used to need
And I'd run out
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
Anything that you put on me
All the things your head needs, You believe
Read my mind 'Cause I can't say anything
The sick heart potion
Two parts pain
One part true again
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath

Deaf Sentences

Deaf sentences cause the refrain,
“There’s failure to communicate, ”
which people who’ve been checked complain
when stymied by a dumb stalemate.
We ought to wonder who’s the cause
of silence in this failure? We
should, when we sense the silence, pause
and ask ourselves if it could be
the problems of our failure to
communicate. We often see,
but do not hear, when we pursue
our own agendas, sentencing
ourselves and those whom we ignore
with deafness, carrying a sting
that’s worse than wasps, and hurts much more.

Inspired by Michiko Kakutani’s review of “Deaf Sentences” by David Lodge (“Hearing and Dreams Both Fading, ” NYT, October 10,2008) :
The title of David Lodge’s latest novel, “Deaf Sentence, ” is, of course, a play on words, and there are many others scattered throughout these pages: “Deaf and the maiden, ” “Deaf Row, ” “I had not thought deaf had undone so many.” And for Mr. Lodge’s sad-sack,60-something narrator, Desmond Bates, who is losing his hearing, deafness is a kind of death — a symptom of mortality, a constant, embarrassing reminder of his aging body and diminishing hopes. After a couple of lackluster novels, Mr. Lodge is back to form: if “Deaf Sentence” lacks the uproarious academic satire found in “Changing Places” and “Small World, ” it nonetheless showcases the author’s ability to use sympathy and slapstick humor to create an appealingly hapless hero and to recount his adventures with Waugh-like verve. The humor is more muted here, not least because his hero is grappling with sobering matters like an ailing parent, a stale marriage and the frustrations and disappointments of advancing age, instead of the sort of career woes and sexual misalliances faced by Mr. Lodge’s earlier heroes. Indeed the novel occupies a similar place in Mr. Lodge’s career as “Exit, Ghost” does in Philip Roth’s, and “Villages” does in John Updike’s: the book is a veteran novelist’s meditation on aging and death and the diminution of youthful dreams.

Can You Hear What I'm Saying

The world is precious, a gift to you and me
I suggest we treat her right, with love and dignity
Everybody's looking for some peace of mind
If you seek the truth then you will surely find
Everybody wants to have global peace
From the principle fact and yet shake the world to its knees
Chorus:
Can you hear what I'm saying, can you hear what I'm saying
Some say might is right, I beg to disagree
I say we all unity and redirect our destiny
Everybody's looking for a quick solution
Are we never so choking from living in a polution
I say put down your guns and stop the revolution
And say this time we make a restitution, yes
chorus can you hear me now
chorus repeats 2x
Can you hear me now, I am calling right out for you
(Can you hear me calling out to you, can you hear me calling out to
you)
There's so much starvation, so much say untruth
So much prejudice, there's so much liquidation oh how long, how long
Can you hear what I'm saying
Africa, America, Eurasia, Latin Africa

I Don't Hear A Poem This Morning

I DON’T HEAR A POEM THIS MORNING

I don’t hear a poem this morning
I hear nothing but a computer hum
A silence which has no beauty in it
A fear which has no name.

I hear loneliness and sadness and doubt and trouble
I don’t hear ‘kindness’ and ‘love’
I hear ‘worry’
I hear Fear.

I hear nothing of Beauty or Kindness or Love
I hear a poem which once again
Says how difficult it all is.

What a troubled person I have always been
Even as I calmly write this now.

Christmas Medley

What child is this / do you hear what I hear /
Joy to the world
What child is this who laid to rest
On marys lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe the son of mary
(do you) hear what I hear (6x)
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
A song a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(do you) hear what I hear?
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
So you know what I know?
In your palace warm mighty king
Do you know what I know?
The child the child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world...
Joy to the world the lord is come
Let earth receive her king
Let every heart prepare him room
And heavn and nature sing
And heavn and nature sing
And heavn and heavn and nature sing
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(do you) hear what I hear?
Joy to the world
(somebody gotta tell ya)
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe the son of mary...

Tommorows Just Another Day (Warped 12 Mix)

Trying hard, I thought I'd done my best
All my life, I can't get no rest
Some who've closed the door before
Say I can't carry on no more.
I hear them saying
Tomorrow's just another day
I hear them saying
And it gets better every day
I hear them saying
Tomorrow's just another day
Listened long, tried to take it in
All these facts leave me in the swim
It's down and down there is no up
I think that I've run out of luck.
I hear them saying
Tomorrow's just another day
I hear them saying
And it gets better every day
I hear them saying
Tomorrow's just another day
Tomorrow's just another... day
Walking now, over covered ground
There is a chance if I move around
I need a moment to reflect
On the friendships I have wrecked.
Why is it I, don't I always try ?
I hear them say
Tomorrow's just another day
I hear them say
And it gets better every day
I hear them say
Tomorrow's just another day
I hear them say
And it gets better every day
I heard them say
Tomorrow's just another day
I hear them say

Tell Me About Love (Love Poem)

I love you openly
But you cannot see this
Because you are looking
In the wrong direction
Just turn around now
And you will see.

I love you quietly
But you cannot hear this
Because you are listening
In the deafness of silence
Listen for our love now
And you will hear.

I love you completely
But you cannot feel this
Because we are touching
In sometimes sadness
Hold me closer now
And you will feel.
