You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself... the height of a man's success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment... And this law is the expression of eternal justice.

Destiny (Terzanelle)
Destiny sparks thundering through,
my life with an iron rod
and day after day I stand not knowing what to do
as if waiting for the presence of a god
to control
my life with an iron rod
and wherever I go wherever I stroll
destiny is still taking mastery
to control
as if the power that it wields, outreaches me
as if I am a slave with a curse
destiny is still taking mastery
of times in better and in worse
always pre-empting everything
as if I am a slave with a curse
and I am driven to wherever its whip rings cracking.
Destiny sparks thundering through,
always pre-empting everything
and day after day I stand not knowing what to do.

Smaller & Smaller
Drought makes the workers dream
Muscles and fields of green
Shovel the last few crumbs
Of generosity
Open hearts, open mind, open mouth, open vein
Drain
Someday the rains will come
My blistered hands tell me
Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow
Bite
Bite
Bite
Cry
Ill keep coming back
Smaller and smaller and smaller
Squash me
Smaller and smaller and smaller
Under the charity
Smaller and smaller and smaller
Under the topsoil
Smaller and smaller and smaller
Under the fingernail
Smaller and smaller and smaller
Then small becomes all becomes all..........
Bite
Bite
Bite
Cry
Its not a mirage
Its not a mirage
Trickling downward, trickling downward
Its not a mirage
Drain
Drain
Bite
Bite
Bite
Cry
Smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller..........

She Just Wants To Be
Its not that she walked away,
Her world got smaller.
All the usual places, the same destinations,
Only somethings changed.
Its not that she wasnt rewarded
With pomegranate afternoons
And mingus, chet baker and chess.
Its not the stampede and fortune
Of prim affectations
Shes off on a right and she knows now
Its greater than the whole
Of the past
Its greater
And now she knows.
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
Its not that the transparency
Of earlier incarnations
Now were back on, were enriched
And loaded
With beautiful vulnerability
And now she knows.
Now is greater
And she knows that.
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
Now is greater
Now is greater
And she knows that
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
She just wants to be somewhere
She just wants to be.
Its not like the angels
Could truly look down
Stir up the trappings
And light on the ground.
Remind us of what, when,
Why or who?
The hows up to us, me and you
And now is greater than the whole
Of the past
Is greater and now she knows that.
Now she knows.

Practice
The novice musician sits down to play
His scales and the piece for the simple joy
Of self-improvement. While he seeks to find
Mastery, only through the failures can
He progress—Only through perpetual
Repetition can he remember songs
That he systematic'lly practices
Until he's better than how he began.
He alters his gestures—articulates
His movements—away from what sounded wrong,
What discordant tones came forth to destroy
The precise sequence of notes he had planned.
Through gradual change, each sound will belong
To something greater: something to enjoy.
