The Everyday Story Of Smalltown

Smalltown, snoring under blankets
Woken by the clank
Its just the milkmans dawn round
Smalltown, hiding undercovers
The lodgers and the lovers
Are asleep round smalltown
Shiney grey black snake of bikes
He slithers
Bearing up the men and boys
To work
Were standing in poplar lines
Making alarm clocks thatll wake our wives up
Dont ask us, we havent the time
Were racing the hooter thatll signal lifes up
Smalltown, crouching in the valley
Woken by the sally army
Sunday marchround
Smalltown, coughing in the toilet
Who on earth would spoil it
Would they pull down smalltown?
If its all the same to you
Mrs progress
Think Ill drink my oxo up
And get away
Its not that youre repulsive to see
In your brand new catalogue nylon nightie
Youre too fast for little old me
Next youll be telling me its 1990
I have lived here for a thousand years or maybe more
And Ive sheltered all the children who have fought the wars
And as payment they make love in me
In squeaky beds
In bicycle sheds
Inside of their heads
As singles and weds
As tories and reds
And thats how Im fed
And thats how Im fed
Smalltown, snoring under blankets
Woken by the clank
Its just the milkmans dawn round
Smalltown, hiding undercovers
The lodgers and the lovers
Are asleep round smalltown
Smalltown, crouching in the valley
Woken by the sally army
Sunday marchround
Smalltown, coughing in the toilet
Now who on earth would spoil it
Will you pull down smalltown
Smalltown
Smalltown

Smalltown Trap

Written by max collins
Suffocate from lack of stimulation
Television time
Gonna break with every bead of sweat
My heart hate seems to climb
My friend and I stick to the tired couches
Please pass the time
I found a dime under the corner cushion
Wishing it was some place else and so do i
Smalltown trap with dreams of breaking out
Here I sit and bake my face is breaking out
Satans in the living room choking me with apathy
Smalltown trap with dreams of breaking out
Inspire me cause if you dont I think Ill dissipate to dust
The liar in me says somethings gonna happen soon because it must
My friend and I stick to the tired couches
Please pass the time
I found a dime under the corner cushion
Wishing it was some place else and so do i
Community immunity is the shot I crave
A sleepless sleep slow motion dream wanna dig my grave
Time ticks away on the longest day
Wanna break away on the longest day

Dixie Boy

Words and music by jim mcbride
Iwas raised in the shadow of an old cotton mill, back when believin was in
Style.
Smalltown heaven and a big-eyed boy made sweet music for a while.
My daddy worked hard down at the facotry.
Nights he went to g.i. school.
He didnt know nothin bout the silver spoon, but he lived by the golden
Rule.
Summer nights he was gone; me and mama stayed home, out on the front porch
Swing, wishin on the stars in the southern sky, and sometimes we used to
Sing.
We were leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms of love, livin all the
Simple joys this dixie boy is made of.
Got my real educationfrom the t.v. station and good ole boys down at the
Park.
The say hey, willie and those rock-a-billies played their way into my
Heart.
I remember the old folks sittin round talkin on laidback sunday
Afternoons.
They said them young folks sure got a hard road.
Oh, theyre growin up too soon.
Now I know they were right, and as I sit here tonight out on the front porch
Swing, the stars are shinin in my young boys eyes, just like they did for
Me;
We are leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms of love, livin all the
Simple joys this dixie boy is made of.

Rock Of America

She knocked down my money, she knocked down my fame
Just wanna feel Im a part of the game
On the radio, on tv, its like a heartbeat deep inside of me
Know what I want, know how to get, its like the sound of a hot corvette
Start it up, let it roll, come on baby, lets lose control
Ooh yeah, I wanna live it up, ooh yeah, dont wanna give it up, oh no
I wanna rock the rock of america, yeah baby rock the rock of america, ooh yeah
I hear the beat everywhere, smalltown streets, union squares
Every citys got that sound, its in the open, not underground
Turn it up all the way, you cant escape it, its here to stay
Sounds like thunder in my soul, come on babe, lets lose control
Ooh yeah, I wanna live it up, ooh yeah, dont wanna give it up now, no no
I wanna rock the rock of america, yeah baby rock the rock of america, ooh yeah
(solo)
Ooh yeah, I wanna live it up, ooh yeah, dont wanna give it up now, no
I wanna rock the rock of america, yeah rock the rock of america
An Ive gotta rock the rock of america, you know what I want
Rock the rock of america, yeah

The Ancient World

Today the Masons are auctioning
their discarded pomp: a trunk of turbans,
gemmed and ostrich-plumed, and operetta costumes
labeled inside the collar "Potentate"
and "Vizier." Here their chairs, blazoned
with the Masons' sign, huddled
like convalescents, lean against one another

on the grass. In a casket are rhinestoned poles
the hierophants carried in parades;
here's a splendid golden staff some ranking officer waved,
topped with a golden pyramid and a tiny,
inquisitive sphinx. No one's worn this stuff
for years, and it doesn't seem worth buying;
where would we put it? Still,

I want that staff. I used to love
to go to the library -- the smalltown brick refuge
of those with nothing to do, really,
'Carnegie' chiseled on the pediment
above columns that dwarfed an inconsequential street.
Embarrassed to carry the same book past
the water fountain's plaster centaurs

up to the desk again, I'd take
The Wonders of the World to the Reading Room
where Art and Industry met in the mural
on the dome. The room smelled like two decades
before I was born, when the name
carved over the door meant something.
I never read the second section,

"Wonders of the Modern World";
I loved the promise of my father's blueprints,
the unfulfilled turquoise schemes,
but in the real structures
you could hardly imagine a future.
I wanted the density of history,
which I confused with the smell of the book:

Babylon's ziggurat tropical with ferns,
engraved watercourses rippling;
the Colossus of Rhodes balanced
over the harbormouth on his immense ankles.
Athena filled one end of the Parthenon,
in an "artist's reconstruction",
like an adult in a dollhouse.

At Halicarnassus, Mausolus remembered himself
immensely, though in the book
there wasn't even a sketch,
only a picture of huge fragments.
In the pyramid's deep clockworks,
did the narrow tunnels mount toward
the eye of God? That was the year

photos were beamed back from space;
falling asleep I used to repeat a new word
to myself, telemetry, liking the way
it seemed to allude to something storied.
The earth was whorled marble,
at that distance. Even the stuck-on porticoes
and collonades downtown were narrative,

somehow, but the buildings my father engineered
were without stories. All I wanted
was something larger than our ordinary sadness --
greater not in scale but in context,
memorable, true to a proportioned,
subtle form. Last year I knew a student,
a half mad boy who finally opened his arms

with a razor, not because he wanted to die
but because he wanted to design something grand
on his own body. Once he said, When a child
realizes his parents aren't enough,
he turns to architecture.
I think I know what he meant.
Imagine the Masons parading,

one of them, in his splendid get-up,
striding forward with the golden staff,
above his head Cheops' beautiful shape --
a form we cannot separate
from the stories about the form,
even if we hardly know them,
even if it no longer signifies, if it only shines.

Lilly-Willy-Woken

Bill Vining had a sorrel colt
Some two years old or more,
But the colt was wild as a mountain deer
And a bridle never wore;
And so one day,
Bill took his colt
named Lilly Willy Woken,
And whipp'd him till his stubborn will
And the whiplash both were broken!

Broke! Broke! Broken!
Your stubborn will is broken
You will dance no more on the sable floor,
O Lilly Willy Woken!

Bill Vining was a banker --
He had a bag of gold;
And not only uncurrent coin,
But customers he sold,
But while he went to break his colt
Young Lilly Willy Woken
His teller told, with his bag of gold
And thus the bank was broken.

Broke! Broke! Broken
Your master's bank is broken!
He will count no more his profits o'er
O Lilly Willy Woken!

Bill Vining was a lover --
He had a lady fair,
Who had said thro' life she'd be his wife
And his bag of gold would share;
But when she saw that all was lost,
Save Lilly Willy Woken,
She felt inclined to change her mind
And so his heart was broken.

Broke! Broke! Broken
Your master's heart is broken!
He will sing no more at his lady's door,
O Lilly Willy Woken!

Bill Vining was a mourner --
He had a host of woes,
And grave despair was pictured where
A smile did once repose.
And so he took the halter off
From Lilly Willy Woken,
And from a shelf he hung himself
And thus his neck was broken!

Broke! Broke! Broken
Your master's neck is broken!
And you see what came of a stubborn frame
O Lilly Willy Woken!

The Heat Is On

By dickey betts, mike lawler & buddy yochim
Copyright 1981 pangola publishing co. & milene music inc
Transcribed by paul gongola
Whatever happened to good time sally
I dont see her round no more
She used to be all over me
It aint like that no more
Sally had the best game there was in town
Now the good girl just cant be found
Whatever happened to good time sally
I dont see her round no more
The heat is on, everybody has gone underground
The heat is on, everybody hiding out just like jesse james
My old home town
Lord, it dont seem the same
Well, I walked in this place, I was just lookin for a game
Everybody here wanted to know my name
I said hush, hush up your mouth, Ill introduce my own self
To this house
I was born in the back woods, I was raised up like a slave
Having me a good time now is all I crave
I spotted me a barroom queen, skin tight blue jeans
That same old midnight show
I took her to the side and I said I wont be satisfied
Until you tell me everything you know
Whatever happened to big time buddy
I dont see him round no more
I heard tell that they got him in jail
But I dont know what they got him for
They caught him with an airplane
Talkin bout some cocaine
Nobody knows for sure
Whatever happened to good time buddy
I dont see hem round no more
The heat is on, everybody has gone underground
The heat is on, everybody hiding out just like jesse james
My old home town
Lord, it dont seem the same

Money

1:

Money makes the world go round
The world go round, the world go round
Money makes the world go round
The world go round, the world go round (money)
Money makes the world go round
The world go round, the world go round
It doesnt matter if youre up or down
cause money makes the world go round
Say what you will because you know its true
No hundred dollar bill, no fun for you
Dream of your life as your days go by
Trapped in a job til the day you die
Those with the dollar are those with the power
Getting more clearer every minute and hour
Keep on your path hanging on by a thread
With anyones luck you might get ahead
Repeat 1
Say what you will because you know its true
Theyre do different from me and you
Got no credit and you got no cash
Living the high life, living so fast
Stare at the sky and wish upon a star
You gotta dream thatll take you real far
Scratch at your head and you toss in your bed
You just cant escape these words she said
Repeat 1
I wish it was love, I wish it was love
I wish it love, but its not. its money
I wish it was you, I wish it was me
I wish it was us, but its not, its money
Repeat 1
I wish it was love (money)
I wish it was love
I wish it was love, but its not
It doesnt matter if youre up or down
Cause money makes the world go round
Cause money makes the world go round
The world go round, the world go round

Who Was That Masked Man

Oh aint it lonely
When youre livin with a gun
Well you cant slow down and you cant turn round
And you cant trust anyone
You just sit there like a butterfly
And youre all encased in glass
Youre so fragile you just may break
And you dont know who to ask
Oh aint it lonely
When youre livin with a gun
Well you cant slow down and you cant turn round
And you cant trust anyone
You just sit there like a butterfly
Youre well protected by the glass
Youre such a rare collectors item
When they throw away whats the trash
You can hang suspended from a star
Or wish on a toilet roll
You can just soak up the atmosphere
Like a fish inside a bowl
When the ghost comes round at midnight
Well you both can have some fun
He can drive you mad, he can make you sad
He can keep you from the sun
When they take him down, hell be both safe and sound
And the hand does fit the glove
And no matter what they tell you,
Theres good and evil in everyone

Circle Game

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when youre older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and dawn
Were captive on the carousel of time
We cant return we con only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game.
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it wont be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and dawn
Were captive on the carousel of time
We cant return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur
Coming true
Therell be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through.
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
Were captive on the carousel of time
We cant return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Im A Marionette

youre so free, thats what everybodys telling me
Yet I feel Im like an outward-bound, pushed around, refugee
Somethings wrong, got a feeling that I dont belong
As if I had come from outer space, out of place, like king kong
Im a marionette, just a marionette, pull the string
Im a marionette, everybodys pet, just as long as I sing
Im a marionette, see my pirouette, round and round
Im a marionette, Im a marionette, just a silly old clown
Like a doll, like a puppet with no will at all
And somebody told me how to talk, how to walk, how to fall
Cant complain, Ive got no-one but myself to blame
Somethings happening I cant control, lost my hold, its insane!
Im a marionette, just a marionette, pull the string
Im a marionette, everybodys pet, just as long as I sing
Im a marionette, see my pirouette, round and round
Im a marionette, Im a marionette, just a silly old clown
look this way, just a little smile, is what they say
youll look better on the photograph if you laugh, thats okay
Im a marionette, just a marionette, pull the string
Im a marionette, everybodys pet, just as long as I sing

Upside Down

(bernard edwards/nile rodgers)
I said upside down
Youre turning me
Youre giving love instinctively
Around and round youre turning me
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Instinctively you give to me
The love that I need
I cherish the moments with you
Respectfully I see to thee
Im aware that youre cheating
When no one makes me feel like you do
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
I know you got charm and appeal
You always play the field
Im crazy you are mine
As long as the sun continues to shine
Theres a place in my heart for you
Thats the bottomline
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Instinctively you give to me
The love that I need
I cherish the moments with you
Respectfully I see to thee
Im aware that youre cheating
But no one makes me feel like you do
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down

Inside out
And round and round
Upside down youre turning me

Loose Lucy

Loose lucy is my delight, she come runnin and we ball all night,
Round and round and round and round and round and round and round,
Dont take much to get me on the ground.
Shes my yo-yo, Im her string, listen to the birds on the hot wire sing,
Yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh, singing, thank you, for a real good time!
I got jumped coming home last night,
Shadow in the alley turned out all my lights,
Round and round and round and round and round and round and round,
Dont take much to get me on the ground.
Loose lucy, she was sore, says I know you dont want my love no more,
Yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh, singing, thank you, for a real good time!
Be-bop baby how can this be? I know you been out a cheating on me,
Round and round and round and round and round and round and round,
Dont take much to get the word around.
Cross my heart and hope to die, I was just hanging out with the other guys,
Yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh, singing, thank you, for a real good time!
Went back home with two black eyes, you know Ill love ya till the day I die,
Round and round and round and round and round and round and round,
Dont take much to get the word around.
I like your smile but I aint your type,
Dont shake the tree when its fruit aint ripe,
Yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh, singing yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh,
Singing yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh-yeh yeh,
Singing, thank you, for a real good time!

Sally of the Valley

In the valley their lived sally,
She owned a dog named fog,
She found fog in the pound,
Fog loved frogs.

In the valley their lived sally,
With her dog named fog,
By the pond she found frond the cat,
Frond loved the pond.

In the valley their lived Sally,
With her dog named fog,
And frond of the pond
She found a bird and named him word.

In the valley their lived sally,
Word was a small bird,
He loved to fly high in the sky,
Frond was fond of him.

In the valley their lived sally,
With her dog named fog,
Frond a cat from the pond,
And her bird named word.

In the valley their lived sally,
Sally died in the valley,
They were all down in the pound,
I miss sally of the valley.

Flags & Banners

(rod stewart, ronnie lane, 1973)
[vocals by ronnie lane]
Last night I was woken by my cry
Had a dream just as plain as you and i
Saw the morning sun on a woodland in the spring
Still hear the echo crashing through the trees
Oh when I saw you down I fell upon my knees
You and I we were wearing southern grey
I called to you, but I used another name
I beat the ground and I cried out in your pain
But through a scarlet door I watched you slipping away
And your brothers helpless prayers were all in vain
Last night I was woken by my cry

Dancin round & round

(adam mitchell)
Im gonna go out tonight
Gonna feel alright
If it tears me right in two
cause I just cant stay feeling this way
With a heart thats full of you
Im gonna go right down
To a part of town
Where Ive never been before
And in some small place
Find a brand new face
And step out on the floor
And Ill be dancing round and round
And Ill be satisfied if I can just hold my ground
And if he helps me to keep your memory down
Ill be dancing round and round
Well you put some distance round you
I know I meant to see
Theres a space inside for someone
But I know it isnt me
So among the boys who are searching
And the girls who hope theyre found
If you look for me, Im the one youll see
Whos dancing round and round
And Ill be dancing round and round
And Ill be satisfied if I can just hold my ground
And if he helps me to keep your memory down
Ill be dancing round and round
Come on music, wash my tears away
Come on darkness, cover up the day
Dancing round and round
And Ill be satisfied if I can just hold my ground
And if he helps me to keep your memory down
Ill be dancing round and round
Ill be dancing round and round

Two Out Of Three Aint Bad

(jim steinman)
Producer for bonnie: jim steinman
Baby we can talk all night
But that aint getting us nowhere
I told you everything I possibly can
Theres nothing left inside of here
And maybe you can cry all night
But thatll never change the way that I feel
The snow is really piling up outside
I wish you wouldnt make me leave here
I poured it on and I poured it out
I tried to show you just how much I care
Im tired of words and Im too hoarse to shout
But youve been cold to me so long
Im crying icicles instead of tears
And all I can do is keep on telling you
I want you
I need you
But there aint no way Im ever gonna love you
Now dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
Dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
Youll never find your gold on a sandy beach
Youll never drill for oil on a city street
I know youre looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there aint no coupe de ville hiding at the bottom
Of a cracker jack box
I cant lie
I cant tell you that Im something Im not
No matter how hard I try
Ill never be able
To give you something
Something that I just havent got
Well theres only one boy that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
And though Ill never get him out of my head
He never loved me back
Ooh I know
Well I remember how he left me on a stormy night
He kissed me and got out of our bed
And I pleaded and I begged him not to walk out that door
He packed his bags and turned away
And he kept on telling me
He kept on telling me
He kept on telling me
I want you
I need you
But there aint no way Im ever gonna love you
Now dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
Now dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
I want you
I need you
But there aint no way Im ever gonna love you
Now dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
Now dont be sad
Cause two out of three aint bad
Baby we can talk all night
But that aint getting us nowhere

I keep on telling you
