Charming and Lovely Feet

People weep in a sad dying city
In staggering discontent;
There is despair along the boulevards
Of limitless regrets;
There is no melodic voice in this birdless world
To provide consolation.

Romance has vanished
And perfumed handkerchiefs discarded;
Roses fade beside trash cans in the alley.
The promises I’ve made
Have becomes consonantal notes
In an opera of defeat.

I’ll have to remove my memories of her
As casually as she removed the sandals
From her charming and lovely feet.

These are days of vanquished retreat
And I have learned my place
Among the hapless and insignificant.
