Thomas Wolfe

I try to walk softly on sand
Along the paths of human lives
Checking all impropriety
In a humble attempt
not to injure anyone.

I've never been too scandalous,
I've never tried to bed
another's wife;
even when I've been
thoroughly drunk,
I've tried to speak overwhelmingly eloquent
without accusations or contempt.

Like Thomas Wolfe,
I've spent more hours alone
than anyone I've known;
I've been on the verge of tears
Down through the decades
Of these lonely years.
