I hunger for something no food gives

I HUNGER FOR SOMETHING NO FOOD GIVES

I hunger for something no food gives
Can I work my way into being loved?
Inside where my mother taught me
Most to be in joy with the world
I continue to hum.

In old age my father’s dreams and fears trouble me still,
But I go on and on
Writing the words- and waiting for them to be read.

How far away is all the distant glory I dreamed
And how small I am beside all the goodness of the years
God has given me.
