I Have No Poem Tonight

I HAVE NO POEM TONIGHT

I have no poem tonight
The sky is too dark
And I am too tired
The day has been long
And I am too tired
I have no poem tonight-

And yet one memory
One moment of the day
suggests a poem-

A dialogue of sounds
With a six- month old grandchild
Ahhhhhhhh
As answer to Ahhhhhhhhh
And Ahhhhhhhh again
As answer to Ahhhhhhhhhh again

The first sounds of a child
The beginning of all poems.
