November

Remember November
its leaves are
orange, red and gold
a melody of colour
just before the chill.

Sometimes its warmth
is like a crisp spring day
or the last of September
and yet winter is close
like a dark shadow.

Winter, lit with a medley
of scents, of mulled wine,
hot toddies, Xmas puddings
to light the days
and dark evenings

It brings pictures
of childhood memories
of cold mists, coal fires,
Bonfire nights
mistletoe and Christmas trees,

Teenage parties
are long gone now
new beaux, new dresses,
expectations of love,
a kiss at a cold doorway.

What are your dreams
my little ones,
where will November
lead you to?
Take a leap of faith.
