Importance of Pleasing

Instead of answering, as I’d have done
Had he not been my lady love’s father,
‘I’ve no taste for it.’, I said, ‘I like it.’
When he’d given me a poem he wrote.
It is to please her father.

Instead of answering, as I’d have done
Had he not been the son of my sweetheart,
‘I’m not moved by it.’, I said, ‘I liked it.’
When he’d shown me a picture he drew.
It is to please the very her.
