INTIMACY between man and dog

LAST night the dog
was alone. It has to be outside the house.
It is his job.

This morning it slips through the
newly opened door
waggles its tail
licks my feet
and keeps its body beside mine.

There is no grudge.
Last night was forgotten.

People should have been like that.
Duty and intimacy
holding close.
