Circumstances Dictate

I’m sitting alone staring death in the face
my heart is beating at a ferocious pace.
I’m shaking all over and wetting my pants
breathing so hard giving time a glance.

If I had the power to stop those hands of time
tomorrow I’d be in a better frame of mind.
I’ve tried to convince them that it wasn’t me,
but deaf ears aren’t interested in my plea.

It’s only human nature to insist on innocence
to save them from an execution sentence.
My not guilty shouts are now gasping last words
I’ve been found guilty, so I’m no longer heard.

I’m finding it difficult to swallow in many ways
my throat is dry and this is my last day.
Circumstances dictate that I can’t prove what I say
and because of that my life ends today.
