Behind The Door Of A Metaphor
We were walking along the tow path
when suddenly out of the blue
she came right out and asked if I loved her,
I was knocked back for a second or two.
She stood there waiting for an answer
and seriously looked me in the eye.
'Now is a good time to answer, ' she said,
'does my question deserve a reply? '
So I said, 'Does a boat sail on water?
Is a beautiful summer sky, blue?
Do lovers hold hands and kiss?
If they do, then we do what lovers do.'
She smiled as I pulled her closer,
and I kissed her passionately.
'Yes, ' she said, 'but do you love me? '
And then I said, 'Is the air that we breathe free? '
She said, 'Why can't you just say 'I love you',
are you afraid or are you unsure? '
I said, 'You haven't told me yet that you love me.'
And she said, 'Oh, it's there behind a metaphor door.'
