A Subconscious Vision

I dreamt I was an orphan boy
who lived in a far off land.
I had no shoes or socks to wear
and my pillow was a bag of sand.

My breakfast was a dug up root
my lunch was just the same.
Water was over two miles away,
and I lived with stomach pain.

Sometimes through constipation,
sometimes from nothing to eat,
sometimes from dirty water,
and sometimes from the heat.

I endured flies and mosquitoes,
and suffered from their disease.
Often I became sick with fever,
which brought me to my knees.

When stomach cramps visited my body,
and the pain wouldn't let me be,
I thought about the other children
far less fortunate than me.
