Hands of Life

I wash my hands
in the days
And the years slip
between my fingers
Leaving them clean
except for bits of weeks
Under my nails that
are hard to get out,
hard to forget

Life has left them
hard and cracked
Scared and scaled
mangled and crushed

And so are my hands
