Disbelieving My Life Lived Should Be Restricted

I remember being a student in grade school.
And disrespecting authority from someone,
That did not look like me.

I remember being compared to Italians and Jews,
And Asians too.
With expectations given to them...
As others like myself were depicted as fools.

I remember attempts to have me subservient.
By comments made from teachers,
Who believed no place for me was meant.
Or offered a hint of encouragement!

I remember growing up in a tenement project.
A development for those who were poor,
And were basically ignored.

I remember disbelieving my life lived should be restricted.
And the very day I told someone what they could kiss.
I remember coming face to face with one who had balled fists.
And I remember standing there biting my lip...
Praying to God for that fist on me to hit.

I didn't grow up,
Learning to turn my cheeks.
Or fold my arms or have my hands on hips.
I grew up daring to be challenged.
And speaking my mind regardless of who liked it!

I did not grow up to stand to then run!

'Call me that again! '
